KCSE Results Out Next Week as Examiners Wind Up Marking, Leave Knec Marking Centres Today

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu arriving at Mangu High School.

KCSE Results Release Dates Looming as Examiners Wind Up Marking, Leave Knec Marking Centres Today

Key Take-aways

  1. The majority of the KCSE 2023 examiners have completed marking. KCSE 2023 results for the 2022 class will be released next week.
  2. The First batch of KCSE examiners 2023 will leave Knec marking centres on Friday January 13, 2023.
  3. Knec has already contracted new examiners to continue marking CRE paper one that was halted temporarily at Mang’u Girls High School on Tuesday.
  4. Some of the CRE paper 1 examiners were retired by Knec against their wish in their quest for better pay and working conditions.

The Marking of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations is over. Most of the KCSE examiners 2023 contracted by Knec to mark candidates’ scripts this year have started clearing from some of the 35 designated marking centres 2023.

KCSE Agriculture examiners who are currently stationed at Moi Girls Isinya High School for instance will leave the marking centre on Friday January 23,2023 having completed the marking process.

The 2023 KCSE marking exercise was not a walk in the park for some examiners.

CRE paper one examiners who are currently stationed at St. Francis Mang’u Girls High School raised eyebrows on the high handedness and rigid nature of the Chief Examiner whose name has been withheld for security purposes.

The examiner in an official statement released on Tuesday noted that the examiners had complained about the chief examiner forcing him to step down. A new chief examiner in acting capacity had to be chosen for the marking process to go on smoothly.

The examiners further demanded for better payment rates per script now that the council pays them Kshs 55 per script. Knec however stood its ground claiming that there was no extra budget for a possible pay rise.

Infuriated, the examiners halted marking and pleas from key education officials-CS Machogu and TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia fell on deaf ears.

Knec therefore decided to retire some CRE paper one examiners and recall those who were willing to continue with the marking process.

The retired KCSE Examiners 2023 had marked an average of 2 boxes which amounts to Kshs 15,000. Knec reimbursed the fare and other travel expenses but it is yet to pay the outstanding amount.

The examiners are hoping that the Council will honour its part of the bargain and pay their dues on time.

Although the majority of the KCSE Examiners have finished marking, KCSE English paper three examiners are still held up at Thika High School and St. Francis Mang’u Boys High School burning the midnight oil in a bid to wind up the tedious marking process.

CRE paper one examiners will also be among the last ones to leave the Knec marking centres 2023 since Knec had to hire fresh examiners from its database to complete marking.

Upon completion, Knec will reimburse the examiners fare and pay them an advance.

The arrears will be paid once KCSE Results are released if Knec honours its pledge to pay KCSE examiners on time.

Last year, members of parliament had to weigh in on the CS Education before KNEC released KCSE examiners’ pay.

KCPE results ready amid rumours of well performed English and Kiswahili papers

The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) 2021 results are ready. The marking of the exams ended early yesterday.

A number of examiners have shared some hints of the results.

According to some who shared with us some tips they said the standardization for mathematics is 0.85 while that for science is 0.84

What this means is for example if a candidate scores 40 ticks in mathematics this means the maximum of 40 ticks will be 40 multiplied by 2 multiplied by 0.85 to get 68% and if he or she scores 50 ticks it becomes 85%

According to examiners who confided to us details of the exams said standardization for Mathematics is 85% Science 84% Social studies and Religion 86% English 97% while Kiswahili 97%

They said English and Kiswahili were well performed with most learners scoring good marks.

According to the markers this years KCPE results will be better than the previous year.

However these are speculations and we are still waiting for official announcements of the KCPE results.

Yesterday Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha urged parents to start preparing their children for form one admission.

Speaking in Vihiga county after inspecting the ongoing KCSE examinations, Magoha said the next focus is on transition to secondary schools.

“In terms of the marking of the primary school exams I think we are about to complete, we have targets and the targets are met. I’ll start now looking for H1 because we have to first start discussing the results with him, then we shall release the results to our children,” Magoha said yesterday.

“—they should start preparing, let the parents prepare their children for form 1 admission,” he added.

Earlier on both Magoha and Early Learning and Basic Education PS Julius Jwan had assured of early release of the results to allow smooth transition to secondary school.

“We are determined to ensure no time is lost. Marking of exams will be concluded within a short while and results released to allow students to proceed to secondary education by May,” the PS Juan had said.

Magoha had said the official release of the 2021 KCPE results will be done any day between Wednesday and Saturday this week.

CS Magoha who was speaking in Kayole during inspection of KCSE examinations said the announcement date will largely depend on availability of his excellency the President.

“Anytime between Wednesday and Saturday. Depending on His Excellency the president’s availability, we should be able to tell our children how they have performed,” said Prof Magoha.

This means if the president will be available for the release of the exams then Thursday or Friday will be the possible days for official release of 2021 KCPE results.

The marking of multiple choice questions was completed last week and only composition and insha papers were remaining.

Knec had earlier changed the date for examiners involved in marking the papers.

Initially the examiners were to report for the marking exercise on 18th March 2021 but Knec changed the date to 15th March.

Successful examiners were asked to report for the marking of insha and composition papers at Alliance High School, Starehe Boys Centre among other selected marking centres.

“CHANGE OF REPORTING DATE FOR EXAMINERS. You are expected to report on Tuesday 15th March 2022 at ALLIANCE HIGH SCHOOL latest by 3pm. Coordination begins immediately. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this change. Thank you,” read a message sent to one of the examiners.

This year the council registered 1,225,507 candidates in 28,316 KCPE examination centres as compared to 1,191,752 candidates in 28,467 centres in 2020.

This reflects an increase of 33,755 representing 2.75 per cent.

KCPE exam centres were served from 491 distribution centres.

The marking of multiple-choice questions were made easier by the acquisition of the modern Optical Mark Recognition which electronically scores the papers.

The OMR captures marked data from candidates’ answer sheets using specialised scanning.

The machines work with a dedicated scanning device that shines a beam of light on the paper.

The contrasting reflection at predetermined positions on a page is used to detect marked areas as they reflect less light than the blank areas of the paper.

With the new machines, scripts are marked in batches of 100 and 200 sheets, unlike the previous technology, which took hours.

The OMR machines are also used to speed up the tallying of Kiswahili Insha and English Composition marks, which were previously done manually by examiners. The two papers are still marked manually.

However, tallying of marks is no longer done through physical counts.

After marking the Insha and Composition scripts, the examiners will pass over the papers to the new machine, which will do the electronic tallying of marks in record time.

New Mid-Year KNEC KCSE Examinations 2025

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) will introduce a mid-year series of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination which will be administered in July every year.

This was intimated by Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Migos on Thursday, noting that this targets candidates wishing to repeat their exam, or those who missed it due to unavoidable circumstances.

“Adult candidates may also consider registering for the July KCSE series examination,” he said while releasing the 2024 KCSE results.

2024 (January 2025) KCSE Distribution of Grades Nationally

In a nutshell:

1,693 KCSE 2024 candidates record straight As, as 48,333 get E

The number of learners who scored mean grade A in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination improved from 1,216 in 2023 to 1,693 in 2024, indicating a steady rise of top scorers countrywide.

Speaking during the release of the 2024 KCSE results, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba commended the learners and attributed the performance to the new grading system that was implemented in 2023.

In the new system, only two mandatory subjects; Mathematics and one language (either English, Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language) are used to compute the mean grade as compared to the previous structure that considered five subjects across three cluster groups.

He added that the number of candidates with direct university entry qualifications (grade C+ and above) rose to 246,391 (25.53 per cent) compared to 201,133 (22.27 per cent) in 2023.

Further, the number of candidates with grade C- is 476,889 (49.41 per cent) compared to 401,216 (44.2 per cent) in 2023.

Those who attained a D+ and above were 605,774 (62.76 per cent) compared to 526,222 (58.22 per cent) in the previous examinations.

Candidates who scored a mean grade E were 48,333; comprising 20,112 women and 28,221 men.

In addition, 840 candidates’ results were cancelled after they engaged in exam irregularities. A further 2,829 candidates’ results were withheld for suspicion of irregularities pending completion of investigations within 30 days.

CS Ogamba confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken on 91 contracted professionals and teachers who aided in irregularities.

Tough Measures for KCSE 2024 Candidates as Knec Casts Net for Malpractice

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has upgraded its game, bringing into play several new more stringent measures to curb cheating. In case you missed out, get a quick glimpse of these new policies below:

Among the measures are the personalization of the examination papers to ensure each is unique to a candidate, the rotation of supervisors; as well as a ban on phones for the invigilators, centre managers and candidates during exams.

The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will be administered from October 22 to November 22, 2024, while the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) will be held from October 28 to November 1, 2024.

One of the key innovations is the personalization of KCSE question papers for each candidate.

According to Knec, this move is designed to prevent cheating by ensuring that each candidate’s exam paper is unique.

Knec CEO David Njengere emphasized that this measure will also enhance the security of the exams by anonymizing the answer scripts during marking, thereby reducing the chances of malpractice and ensuring fairness in the grading process.

This means that the examiners won’t be able to identify the owner of the script, as it will only contain a signature.

“This measure is expected to boost exam security by anonymizing answer scripts during the marking process. The KCSE question papers will be personalized for every candidate. This will help anonymise the answer scripts during marking. More details on this innovation will be shared with supervisors and invigilators during the Sub- County briefing sessions,” said Dr Njengere.

The new system aims to streamline the marking of the 2024 KCSE exams, set to be taken by 965,501 candidates across 10,755 centers, an increase from 903,260 in 2023.

Additionally, Knec will administer the KPSEA to 1,313,913 candidates in 32,573 centers, bringing the total number of candidates for national exams to over 2.27 million. Knec has also revised the deployment of security officers.

For the KPSEA exams, security personnel will now only be involved in the distribution and collection of exam materials.

However, the standard practice of deploying at least two security officers to each KCSE examination center will continue.

Another significant change concerns the use of mobile phones during exams. All staff involved in exam administration, such as supervisors, invigilators, and center managers, will now be required to secure their mobile phones in lockable desks, monitored by security officers.

This step, Knec said, is intended to minimize any potential misconduct and ensure the integrity of the examination process.

“No phones will be allowed during the opening of the exam papers or while the exams are in progress. Phones will be secured in local desks under the supervision of a security officer, with the center holding the key,” said Dr Njegere.

Ms Antonina Lentoijoni, the Director Staffing, Teacher Service Commission (TSC), emphasised that supervisors and invigilators will not be deployed to examination centers where they have vested interests. Instead, they will be required to declare any affiliations with the centers where they will be assigned.

“They will be required to declare any affiliations with the examination centers where they will be assigned,” said Ms Lentoijoni
Ms Lentoijoni said that they have introduced a rotation system for KCSE supervisors.

Each supervisor will serve at an examination center for only one week before being reassigned.

This strategy is designed to minimize familiarity with the centers and further enhance examination security.

“All KCSE supervisors will be required to serve for only one week at any examination center. They will keep rotating every week. I am confident that even after we have nominated them, none of them will know the centers they will be assigned to. They will be supervised as we sit here today,” said Ms Lentoijoni.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba highlighted that KNEC has expanded the number of distribution centers for KCSE materials by adding 41 new centers which sums up otal to 617, ensuring a smoother and more efficient distribution of exam papers nationwide.

“When we compromise our interventions, we compromise the standards of our certificates, all of us, and that affects our economy, I wish to assure you that the country that the challenges experienced in 2023 in the collection of examination materials for the KCSE twice a day have been addressed by introducing an extra 41 containers,” said Mr Ogamba.

Further, the CS issued a stern warning regarding examination malpractices, urging all candidates, managers, and supervisors to strictly comply with the laid-down examination regulations, cautioning that failure to do so would result in facing “the full force of the law.

“The government shall have no mercy on anyone who will be found engaging in the transmission of examination malpractices,” said Mr Ogamba.

The CS currently, 16,000 classrooms are being constructed to accommodate the new learning requirements. The CS, having toured several counties to monitor progress, expressed confidence that all classrooms will be ready ahead of the 2025 academic calendar.

“We are constructing 16,000 classrooms in our junior schools that will accommodate them in 2025,” said Mr Ogamba.
