On March 13, 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha through an official circular echoed the Teachers Service Commission’s view that there is a need for teachers and other TSC staff to enroll for and undertake enhancement courses at selected and approved institutions.
Professor Magoha further added that the Ministry of Education had consequently come up with a list of all approved courses, their duration and the institutions offering them to enable teachers to make the right choices.
CS Magoha says that the training will only be provided by the Kenya Education Management Institute, KEMI.
In the circular, CS Magoha notes that his office has realized that training in the education sector is being conducted in other institutions and bodies yet most of the courses/ programs offered are available at the Kenya Education Management Institute, KEMI.
The aim of the circular therefore is to direct all teacher refresher/ enhancement training to be undertaken through the Kenya Education Management Institute, KEMI.
TSC Teachers Refresher Courses
This comes even as the Kenyan teachers’ employer, TSC is planning to roll out in service training dubbed Teacher Professional Development, TPD Modules for all TSC employed and currently practicing teachers.
The TPD Training modules will take 5 days and they shall be conducted once in every five years.
The following institutions have been selected to offer the TPD modules for teachers during school holidays: Kenyatta University, Riara University, Mount Kenya University and Kenya Education Management Institute.
Upon commencement of the TPD program, a teacher will be given a certificate which is renewable every five years.
Subsequent applicants for the TSC registration certificate will be issued with both certificates after starting the training.
After completing all TPD modules, teachers will be eligible for re-certification and TSC promotions.
WORTH NOTING IS THE FACT THAT TPD MODULES ARE PART OF THE CAREER PROGRESSION GUIDELINES, CPGs. THIS THEREFORE MEANS THAT PRACTISING TSC EMPLOYED TEACHERS MUST UNDERTAKE TPD MODULES.
ANY TEACHER WHO WILL FAIL TO UNDERTAKE THE TPD MODULES AS STIPULATED IN THE CPGs WOULD HAVE VIOLATED THE TSC CODE OF CONDUCT HENCE LEGIBLE FOR DISCIPLINARY ACTION FROM THEIR EMPLOYER, TSC.
