Licenced Claim Settling Agents in Kenya {IRA Ultimate List}

A Claim Settling Agent in Kenya is an entity or person licensed under the Insurance Act to officially handle and negotiate the settlement of an insurance claim on behalf of an insurer (the insurance company).

Here is a breakdown of what they are and who may perform this function:

📜 Key Roles and Regulation in Kenya

Aspect Description
Official Definition A professional licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) to undertake the business of settling and negotiating the settlement of insurance claims on behalf of the insurer.
Regulatory Body The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) is the body responsible for licensing and overseeing claim settling agents and other insurance service providers in Kenya.
Licensing Only registered claims settling agents, brokers, agents, loss adjusters, loss assessors, and surveyors are legally allowed to carry on the business of claims processing in Kenya.
Key Qualifications To be licensed, the Principal Officer of a Claims Settling Agent typically requires a degree or diploma in insurance and must be a current Associate member of the Insurance Institute of Kenya (AIIK) or another recognized professional body.

👥 Who Acts as a Claim Settling Agent?

While the term refers to a specific licensed category, the function of claims settlement can involve several licensed intermediaries:

  1. Dedicated Claim Settling Agencies: These are firms specifically licensed to handle this business. For example, some licensed entities in the past have been listed as “Claims Settling Agency.”

  2. Loss Adjusters/Assessors: These professionals are licensed to assess, investigate, negotiate, and settle losses, often working on behalf of the insurer to determine the true value of a claim before payment.

  3. Insurance Companies (Insurers): Ultimately, the insurance company itself (e.g., GA Insurance, Jubilee Insurance, Britam, etc.) is responsible for the timely and fair settlement of a claim and has an internal claims department that handles the process.

  4. Insurance Brokers: While primarily representing the client (the insured), brokers also play a crucial role in assisting their clients with the process of preparing, submitting, and following up on claims to ensure efficiency.

🔎 How to Find a Licensed Agent

Since licensing is mandatory, the most reliable source for a definitive list of currently authorized agents is the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA). They publish lists of all licensed insurance intermediaries, including:

  • Insurance Brokers

  • Claim Settling Agents

  • Loss Adjusters

  • Insurance Surveyors

Licensed Motor Assessors in Kenya {IRA Newest List}

Motor Assessors in Kenya play a crucial role in the insurance and motor vehicle industry, primarily by evaluating the extent of damage to motor vehicles for insurance claims and determining vehicle valuation.

Here is a breakdown of their role, qualifications, and other key aspects:

🚗 Role and Responsibilities

The main function of a Motor Assessor is to provide an objective, technical assessment of a vehicle’s condition, especially after an accident or for valuation purposes. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Accident Damage Assessment: Inspecting damaged vehicles to determine the extent of the damage, identify the cause, and estimate the cost of repairs. This involves checking for potentially fraudulent or exaggerated claims.

  • Valuation Services: Conducting professional valuations of motor vehicles to determine their current market value, pre-insurance value for underwriting, or pre-sale value.

  • Claims Review: Reviewing reports from external assessors and negotiating repair costs directly with garages/repairers to ensure cost-effectiveness for the insurer.

  • Repair Monitoring: Regularly visiting garages to monitor the progress of repairs to ensure quality standards are met and agreed-upon Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are adhered to.

  • Re-Inspection: Conducting post-repair re-inspections to confirm that all necessary repairs have been carried out correctly and align with the assessment report.

  • Total Loss (Write-Off) Assessment: Advising the insurer on whether the cost of repairing a vehicle exceeds its market value, recommending it be declared a total loss.

🎓 Qualifications and Experience

To become a Motor Assessor in Kenya, you generally need a combination of education, professional certification, and practical experience.

Education and Professional Certification

  • Minimum Education: A Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering is typically required.

  • Professional Certification: The Principal Officer of an assessing firm, and often the assessor themselves, must have passed or been exempted from the Certificate of Proficiency (COP) in Insurance Examination, with a pass in Motor Insurance. This examination is offered by institutions like the College of Insurance.

  • Registration: Assessing firms must register with the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) and meet their specific requirements.

Experience

  • Candidates usually need at least 3 to 5 years of relevant working experience in motor assessment or as a motor vehicle technician.

💰 Salary Range

The salary for Valuers and Loss Assessors in Kenya (which includes Motor Assessors) is generally competitive and increases with experience.

  • Entry-Level/Start: A typical net monthly salary can start around Ksh 40,769 to Ksh 99,729.

  • Experienced (After 5 years): This range can increase to between Ksh 56,507 and Ksh 163,116 net per month or higher, depending on the employer (insurance company, independent firm, or in-house assessor for a garage) and seniority.

Note: These figures are estimates and can vary significantly based on the specific company, job level, and location.

  • Insurance companies (e.g., CIC, Kenyan Alliance Insurance, GA Insurance, Old Mutual Insure)

Licenced Insurance investigators in Kenya {IRA Verified List}

Insurance investigators in Kenya play a crucial role, primarily focused on verifying claims and combating fraud within the insurance industry.

Here is a breakdown of their role, regulation, and how one can become an insurance investigator in Kenya:

💼 Role of Insurance Investigators in Kenya

Insurance investigators, who can be in-house employees of insurance companies or independent private investigators/firms, primarily:

  • Combat Insurance Fraud: This is a major function, involving investigations into suspicious or exaggerated claims across various classes of insurance (motor, personal injury/death, health, property, workers’ compensation, etc.). They seek to expose fraudulent activities like staged accidents, exaggerated injuries, or deliberate property destruction for a claim.

  • Establish Circumstances: They work to verify the details and legitimacy of a claim to ensure fair settlement, even in complex non-fraudulent cases like multi-vehicular accidents.

  • Collect Evidence: They use various investigative techniques, including surveillance, forensic analysis, document examination, and interviews, to gather evidence to support or deny a claim.

  • Trace Beneficiaries: In some instances, they may be tasked with locating missing or unknown beneficiaries of a policy.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya also has a specialized Insurance Fraud Investigation Unit that works in partnership with the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) to proactively address and prosecute insurance fraud cases.

📜 Regulation and Bodies

Insurance investigators, like other service providers in the sector, are regulated under the Insurance Act (Cap 487).

  • Registration Requirement: The Act stipulates that no person shall carry on the business of an “insurance investigator” unless they are registered with the relevant authority (e.g., the Insurance Regulatory Authority – IRA).

  • The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA): The IRA is the main body overseeing the industry.

  • Institute of Loss Adjusters & Risk Surveyors (IARS): This body also includes Insurance Investigators in its list of service providers.

🎓 How to Become an Insurance Investigator

To become a registered insurance investigator or Principal Officer of an investigation firm in Kenya, you generally need to meet specific requirements:

  1. Professional Certification: The Principal Officer must have passed or been exempted from the Certificate of Proficiency (COP) in Insurance examination offered by institutions like the College of Insurance.

  2. Experience: The Principal Officer must have at least two years of working experience in insurance investigation.

  3. Education and Training: While specific degrees are not always mandatory, beneficial qualifications often include:

    • A diploma or degree in Insurance or Risk Management.

    • Specialized training in Investigations, Fraud Investigation, or Forensic Investigation. Institutions like the Insurance Institute of East Africa (IIEA) and the Kenya School of Security Management offer relevant courses and certifications (like the Certified Private Insurance Investigator – CPII).

  4. Business Registration: For a firm, there are requirements related to financial standing, certificate of incorporation, and compliance with the Insurance Act’s naming conventions.
