To start with, it is important to know which tax returns you are filing. There are two main categories: nil returns and individual income tax returns.

Earlier on, we outlined a simplified procedure on how to file both nil and individual income tax returns. Click on the following links to access them:

Another point to note is that individual income tax returns are further divided into those with withholding certificates and those without.

Below is a list of documents that one must have when filing KRA individual tax returns

  1. P9 form

This form is usually generated by your employer for instance the Teachers Service Commission in the case of a teacher.

It is a tax card showing the amount of tax, relief and gross salary paid to you by your employer for the financial year in question.

  1. KRA PIN and Password

These will help whoever is filing the returns to log into the KRA official portal to file your returns.

  1. Bank Details such as name, branch name, city, account holder’s name and account number.
  2. An exemption certificate for those with disability (self and wife)
  3. Employer’s PIN. For example TSC employees can use the TSC PIN which is P051098084.

How to file KRA Tax Returns (individual) online using P9 Form via the official KRA iTax Portal, step-by-step guide

With cyber attendants demanding for up to Kshs 200 service charges upfront in order to file KRA returns using P9 forms for TSC employed teachers, it is important that teachers learn some of these simple procedures and file the returns on their own.

There is no point in paying anyone to do such simple tasks as filing returns or activating your TPAD2 log into the account.

In our previous article, we offered a very reliable link and simplified procedure for activating your TPAD2 log in account. You can click on the link below for more details

In this article, we shall provide all the requirements and a detailed procedure for filing KRA returns for TSC employed teachers in Kenya

Requirements for filing KRA Returns for the employed

There are three basic requirements for filing KRA returns through iTax portal that is KRA PIN number, iTax Password, and KRA P9 Form

KRA PIN Number

This can be obtained from your KRA Certificate.

iTax Password

This shall enable you to log onto the official KRA Portal and file your returns. In case you forget your password, you can reset it, give the answer to the security question and click to submit.

A new password will be sent to the email used to register for your KRA PIN which you will use to access your account.

KRA P9 Form

This refers to a tax deduction form indicating your Employer’s Tax PIN, Gross pay, Taxable pay, PAYE and Personal Relief.

A P9 form usually records tax data for one year that is 12 months however, the number of months on one’s P9 form varies depending on the date of employment and the deductions.

TSC Breaking News Today

TSC News Today

This follows the latest TSC News on teachers’ salaries indicating that teachers should warm up for better salaries after parliament quashed efforts by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, SRC geared towards ensuring a salary freeze for all civil servants, teachers included for the next five years.

Teachers therefore have got reason to smile now that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s final budget took into account their grievances and factored in salary rise cash amounting to billions.

In the new CBA, primary school teachers are most preferred as compared to other categories of teachers.

According to the Teachers Service Commission CEO, salaries of primary school teacher will be in the list of
Change in pay for all teachers, but primary class teachers have been awarded a pay hike. 6000.

The commission says that it supported primary school teachers because they are the most affected group who get low wages.

The change is immediate and the teachers will be smiling towards the bank at the end of next month with their salary topped.

The Commision’s move has been appreciated by all employed primary school teachers who say that life has become unbearable with little salary.

Some teachers say that with the salary hike they will be able to get basic necessities which will improve their standard of living.

With teachers now being sure to get salary therefore it will take some time due to the huge number of teachers in the country to implement it and display it in their payslips in a phased manner.

Therefore, this means that this month’s salary is bound to be delayed because of this.

KCSE Results Now Ready as Examiners Start Clearing from Knec Marking Centres; Expect Results as from Friday (This is how you can receive your official KCSE 2020 Knec Results)

Latest news reaching our newsdesk this afternoon on the awaited for release of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE 2020 national exams indicate that the necessary measures have been undertaken to meet the May 10,2021 deadline set by the Education Ministry.

This is after reliable sources-KCSE 2020 Knec examiners revealed that the marking exercise for most KCSE 2020 Candidates’ scripts is complete.

The majority of the Knec Contracted Professionals are in the process of cross checking Candidates’ scores before they can officially clear and leave the designated Knec marking centres spread across Nairobi Metropolitan area.

Some of the KCSE 2020 scripts which have already been marked as of Sunday May 2, 2021  include History, CRE paper one, Chemistry Paper II, and Mathematics Paper II.

The marking of English Paper III, 101/3 which is the most rigorous and time consuming is almost complete.

The Examiners contracted to mark this paper have given their best shots to ensure that Results are released as scheduled.

They are expected to leave their marking centres by Tuesday May 4, 2021.

This means that the KCSE 2020 Examiners would have marked the over 700,000 scripts for Knec registered candidates within a record time of 14 days.

Moderation(Standardization) of KCSE 2020 Knec Results

Once the marking is done, the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC will take a few days to standardize learners’ scores .

This is a Mathematical process that is designed to eliminate variable elements from test scores thus enabling candidates to be compared without bias.

Moderation of KCSE Results thus involves giving equal values to the results of each test irrespective of the number of questions and the time allocated for completing them. That is why an A in Mathematics is lower than an A in CRE.

How To Apply for Remarking of your KCSE Exam. The Fee You Will Pay

If you received KCSE results which you strongly believe do not reflect your true academic ability and you would like to apply for remarking,  do so by following this procedure below

Remarking of KCSE Knec Scripts 2021

Remarking of Knec KCSE scripts for candidates may be undertaken by the Council upon formal written requests by Heads of Secondary schools that presented the candidates for the examinations.

KCSE remarking requests from private candidates however should be channeled through the Provincial Directors of Education or appointed District officers at the Ministry of Education.

This simply means that a candidate does not have the power to request for Knec remarking services. You have to request your principal to apply for remarking through the Provincial Director of Education.

Convincing Reasons for Remarking of KCSE 2021

The Council will undertake the remarking of scripts only after convincing reasons have been enlisted by Heads of schools justifying remarking of scripts for a candidate whose results have already been issued.

New Mid-Year KNEC KCSE Examinations 2025

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) will introduce a mid-year series of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination which will be administered in July every year.

This was intimated by Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Migos on Thursday, noting that this targets candidates wishing to repeat their exam, or those who missed it due to unavoidable circumstances.

“Adult candidates may also consider registering for the July KCSE series examination,” he said while releasing the 2024 KCSE results.

2024 (January 2025) KCSE Distribution of Grades Nationally

In a nutshell:

1,693 KCSE 2024 candidates record straight As as 48,333 get E

The number of learners who scored mean grade A in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination improved from 1,216 in 2023 to 1,693 in 2024, indicating a steady rise of top scorers countrywide.

Speaking during the release of the 2024 KCSE results, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba commended the learners and attributed the performance to the new grading system that was implemented in 2023.

In the new system, only two mandatory subjects; Mathematics and one language (either English, Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language) are used to compute the mean grade as compared to the previous structure that considered five subjects across three cluster groups.

He added that the number of candidates with direct university entry qualifications (grade C+ and above) rose to 246,391 (25.53 per cent) compared to 201,133 (22.27 per cent) in 2023.

Further, the number of candidates with grade C- is 476,889 (49.41 per cent) compared to 401,216 (44.2 per cent) in 2023.

Those who attained a D+ and above were 605,774 (62.76 per cent) compared to 526,222 (58.22 per cent) in the previous examinations.

Candidates who scored a mean grade E were 48,333; comprising 20,112 women and 28,221 men.

In addition, 840 candidates’ results were cancelled after they engaged in exam irregularities. A further 2,829 candidates’ results were withheld for suspicion of irregularities pending completion of investigations within 30 days.

CS Ogamba confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken on 91 contracted professionals and teachers who aided in irregularities.

Tough Measures for KCSE 2024 Candidates as Knec Casts Net for Malpractice

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has upgraded its game, bringing into play several new more stringent measures to curb cheating. In case you missed out, get a quick glimpse of these new policies below:

Among the measures are the personalization of the examination papers to ensure each is unique to a candidate, the rotation of supervisors; as well as a ban on phones for the invigilators, centre managers and candidates during exams.

The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will be administered from October 22 to November 22, 2024, while the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) will be held from October 28 to November 1, 2024.

One of the key innovations is the personalization of KCSE question papers for each candidate.

According to Knec, this move is designed to prevent cheating by ensuring that each candidate’s exam paper is unique.

Knec CEO David Njengere emphasized that this measure will also enhance the security of the exams by anonymizing the answer scripts during marking, thereby reducing the chances of malpractice and ensuring fairness in the grading process.

This means that the examiners won’t be able to identify the owner of the script, as it will only contain a signature.

“This measure is expected to boost exam security by anonymizing answer scripts during the marking process. The KCSE question papers will be personalized for every candidate. This will help anonymise the answer scripts during marking. More details on this innovation will be shared with supervisors and invigilators during the Sub- County briefing sessions,” said Dr Njengere.

The new system aims to streamline the marking of the 2024 KCSE exams, set to be taken by 965,501 candidates across 10,755 centers, an increase from 903,260 in 2023.

Additionally, Knec will administer the KPSEA to 1,313,913 candidates in 32,573 centers, bringing the total number of candidates for national exams to over 2.27 million. Knec has also revised the deployment of security officers.

For the KPSEA exams, security personnel will now only be involved in the distribution and collection of exam materials.

However, the standard practice of deploying at least two security officers to each KCSE examination center will continue.

Another significant change concerns the use of mobile phones during exams. All staff involved in exam administration, such as supervisors, invigilators, and center managers, will now be required to secure their mobile phones in lockable desks, monitored by security officers.

This step, Knec said, is intended to minimize any potential misconduct and ensure the integrity of the examination process.

“No phones will be allowed during the opening of the exam papers or while the exams are in progress. Phones will be secured in local desks under the supervision of a security officer, with the center holding the key,” said Dr Njegere.

Ms Antonina Lentoijoni, the Director Staffing, Teacher Service Commission (TSC), emphasised that supervisors and invigilators will not be deployed to examination centers where they have vested interests. Instead, they will be required to declare any affiliations with the centers where they will be assigned.

“They will be required to declare any affiliations with the examination centers where they will be assigned,” said Ms Lentoijoni
Ms Lentoijoni said that they have introduced a rotation system for KCSE supervisors.

Each supervisor will serve at an examination center for only one week before being reassigned.

This strategy is designed to minimize familiarity with the centers and further enhance examination security.

“All KCSE supervisors will be required to serve for only one week at any examination center. They will keep rotating every week. I am confident that even after we have nominated them, none of them will know the centers they will be assigned to. They will be supervised as we sit here today,” said Ms Lentoijoni.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba highlighted that KNEC has expanded the number of distribution centers for KCSE materials by adding 41 new centers which sums up otal to 617, ensuring a smoother and more efficient distribution of exam papers nationwide.

“When we compromise our interventions, we compromise the standards of our certificates, all of us, and that affects our economy, I wish to assure you that the country that the challenges experienced in 2023 in the collection of examination materials for the KCSE twice a day have been addressed by introducing an extra 41 containers,” said Mr Ogamba.

Further, the CS issued a stern warning regarding examination malpractices, urging all candidates, managers, and supervisors to strictly comply with the laid-down examination regulations, cautioning that failure to do so would result in facing “the full force of the law.

“The government shall have no mercy on anyone who will be found engaging in the transmission of examination malpractices,” said Mr Ogamba.

The CS currently, 16,000 classrooms are being constructed to accommodate the new learning requirements. The CS, having toured several counties to monitor progress, expressed confidence that all classrooms will be ready ahead of the 2025 academic calendar.

“We are constructing 16,000 classrooms in our junior schools that will accommodate them in 2025,” said Mr Ogamba.

Knec Finally Clears the air on the fate of 2021/2022/2023 Examiners Payment Rates, Delayed Pay Day and Zero Pay for Deputy Centre Managers despite being Part of the 2022 Knec Contracted Professionals

Knec Finally Clears the air on the fate of 2021/2022/2023 Examiners Payment Rates, Delayed Pay Day and Zero Pay for Deputy Centre Managers despite being Part of the 2022 Knec Contracted Professionals.

KNEC New Payment Rates Per Day, Pay Day  and Payment Method For  2022 Contracted and Deployed  Invigilators & Supervisors; Council Releases New Payment Rates for List of Contracted Professionals 2022

The Knec payment rates  per day and per script for contracted professionals and examiners are likely to remain constant this year (2022) since the demands of each KCSE or KCPE script have not changed. Besides, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, Kuppet has aborted any form of industrial action for now till further notice, probably in July 2022 when re-negotiations for the betterment of teachers’ welfare in the current CBA 2021-2025 will commence.

This therefore means that even if the recently contracted Knec examiners and other professionals stage demos to demonstrate their discontent with the current Knec payment rates per day, poor meals and working conditions at the Knec marking centres this year, they may not have the back up of Kuppet, the giant Teachers’ union.

Knec Taken to Task over zero Payment Rates per Day for Contracted Professionals- Deputy Centre Managers and low Payment Rates per Script for Examiners

The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) was obliged to finally respond on the fate of Reimbursement and payment for teachers who are usually contracted to mark the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE) in Nairobi.

How Knec pays Examiners and other Contracted Professionals

Knec officials who had been summoned to appear in parliament for questioning after numerous complaints by teachers who said they have not been paid months after the exams were marked and released were put to task and forced to shed light on how Knec pays Examiners and other Contracted Professionals.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bomet Central constituency Mr. Ronald Tonui posed a question on why the examiners who had been contracted to mark the 2020 KCSE exams had not been paid months after the official release of the examination results.

Explain why the Kenya National Examinations Council has not paid teachers who marked KCSE examinations and when they will be paid,” asked Tonui.

Official Knec Response on the Fate of Examiners Payment Date, Rates and Zero Pay for Deputy Centre Managers

“Hon. Chair, KNEC engages teachers and other contracted professionals in the administration and marking of national examinations and pays them a token for the services rendered.

The reconciliation of the KCSE examiners script fees takes time to be completed and the total amount payable is Kes.1,025,235,307 out of which Kes.251,251,200 is paid at the conclusion of the marking period between 2nd April and 17th April.

Knec pays Kes.251,251,200 to examiners once the marking period which amounts to close to two weeks elapses in form of advance and reimbursement of fare and other travelling costs incurred when reporting to the designated Knec Marking Centres in Nairobi.

Thus, the outstanding Knec examiners’ pay  usually stands at Kes.773,984, 107.00.

For the FY 2020/2021, KNEC was allocated KCPE/KCSE grants of Kes.4,023,868, 712 instead of the required Kes.4,588,244,200 at Kes.800 per candidate for KCPE and Kes.5,400 per candidate for KCSE.

Consequently, KNEC was not unable to pay the teachers who were engaged during the marking of the 2020 KCSE examinations on time in 2021.

The Ministry however engaged the National Treasury for the immediate release of the outstanding funds to ensure that the outstanding arrears are paid to the markers.

Knec Pay Day for 2022 Examiners and Contracted Professionals

To forestall a recurrence of such unpaid arrears for Knec examiners and other professionals, the council was directed to ascertain the number of candidates as soon as the registration process is concluded, in order for the Ministry to ensure that any shortfall is covered in the Supplementary budget tabled and considered by Parliament before the examinations begin in March 2022.

Knec Criteria for Determining Payment Rates for invigilators, supervisors, examiners and centre managers

When asked to elaborate on the  criteria used in determining rates for paying invigilators, supervisors, examiners and centre managers, the current rates and when KNEC intends to revise the said rates; Knec noted that Knec payment rates vary from one examiner  or contracted professional to the other and some of the factors considered encompass travelling cost and meals, number of days worked as per the Knec register online, length and marking demands of each KCSE or KCPE paper.

“Hon. Chair, supervisors and Invigilators are paid to facilitate their travel and meals at a fixed rate per day. The amount paid to supervisors depends on the number of days worked.

Examiners are paid travel return fare based on the distance of their duty stations from the marking centres.

The script fees rate is based on the length and marking demands of the paper.”

Knec Review of Examiners Payment Rates per Script

According to Knec, the latest review of payment paper rates was carried out in 2019. The next review will be in 2022 subject to the availability of funds.

Knec Explains why Deputy Centre Managers and Teachers Handling KCSE Practicals are not Considered for Payment

When asked to explain why the deputy centre managers and teachers handling practicals during examinations are not considered for payment and if the Ministry can consider paying them, Knec explained that the Deputy Centre Managers and Teachers handling practicals are not directly involved in the administration of examinations in their respective schools and therefore not entitled to any form of payment.

“Hon. Chair, The Deputy Centre Managers and Teachers handling practicals are not directly involved in the administration of examinations in their respective schools and therefore not entitled to any form of payment.”

The Deputy Centre Managers are there to assist in enforcing discipline of the candidates during the examinations while Science Teachers prepare the laboratories for the practical tests which is part of their routine duties and responsibilities.

TSC Salaries; How and Why Parliamentary Education Committee Resolved Impasse Surrounding TSC Salary Rise for Teachers in the 2021-2025 CBA Cycle

TSC Latest News Today; The year 2020 saw teachers and other civil servants greatly demoralized after the Salaries and Remuneration boss Lynn Mengich declared the closure and postponement of any pending Collective bargaining agreements bordering on pay rise for the workers for a period of four years on grounds that the country was bleeding from economic wounds fanned by the Covid-19 pandemic.

KUPPET, one of the giant Teachers’ unions saw its CBA bashed, even after the teachers’ employer agreed that teachers especially classroom teachers had been taken for a ride in the 2017-2021 CBA cycle that saw school administrators get huge salary chunks leading to huge salary disparities between them and regular teachers.

Here are the full details on the rejected Teachers’ CBA 2021-2025 fronted by KUPPET in 2020

Whereas a regular teacher earns up to Kshs 21, 000 as basic salary, the lowest paid school head takes home Kshs 50,000 as basic salary.

TSC salary scales for teachers 2021-2025

Recently the Parliamentary select Education Committee rekindled teachers’ hope after it gave a ruling declaring the SRC move to freeze pay rise for teachers and other civil servants null an void.

Latest TSC Salaries for Teachers: Reprieve As Parliament Revokes SRC Directive of Freezing Salary Review

Teachers and civil servants have something to smile about after the parliament revoked Salaries and remuneration commission directive that had froze pay rise.

MPs ruled the circulars are unconstitutional as they violate workers’s rights to engage in collective bargaining with the employers in line with provisions of Article 41(5) of the Constitution.

The Article stipulates that “every trade union, employers’ organisation and employer has the right to engage in collective bargaining.”

This now means workers, through unions will be free to negotiate for new pay increases which the commission had frozen.

The SRC in June froze salary increments for all civil servants for two years starting July, dampening their prospects of better fortunes amid tough economic times brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The suspension affected basic salary, allowances and benefits of all government workers prompting unions to threaten to stage “a mother of all strikes.”

However, teachers have already signed a non-monetary CBA that will lapse in June 2025.

This means that the parliament’s revoking of of SRC directive does not change anything in the CBA teachers’ unions signed with their employer.

Despite the fact that teachers may have to wait for four years to enjoy enhanced salaries, they will enjoy enhanced leave days and flexible transfers that would help bring closer families that had been separated by distance.

FemiVoice:Who is a Man? Here are five main things that define a man

FemiVoice:Who is a Man?

The Five Major Definitions of a Man

There are so many myths surrounding the definition of a man.

So when you hear people telling you to man up, they have a point.

The point is, you are not man enough. Yes, you are not worth the term man.

Today FemiVoice will take you through the things that make up a man.

The aim of this article is to challenge the boy child to wake up to the reality that the world is changing and soon or later he might not be able to defend his masculinity.

Who is a man?

Definition 1: A man is a demi-god

When he coughs, the entire world gets shaken.

His voice commands audience.

This does not mean that you bash women to make them listen to you.

If you are fighting to get recognized in a woman’s life then you definitely do not deserve to be called a man.

My advice is for you to borrow a leaf from your peers whose wives are the sole providers yet they respect them through and through.

Definition 2: A man is good at his job.

Yes, a man is good at his job, not his work, not his avocation, not his hobby.

A man knows his job well and is always prepared to do it perfectly.

He knows the what to do, when and how to go about it.

Definition 3: A man fixes things

A man in need is a man indeed.

If you cannot even fix an aerial for your family to avoid missing out on their favorite program, then you do not deserve the term man.

A real man knows when the tap is leaking and has his set of tools to fix all that.

Do not be the kind that goes borrowing a screw driver from your nextdoor neighbors all the time.

The worst scenario is when you simply cannot fix anything including yourself!

Definition 4:  A man is full of simplicity laced with elegance

No woman is willing to have a flower girl in the place of a man in her life.

Do not act as if you can rival Vera Sidika in her complexities.

Be simple and down to earth. Simplicity is the key to greatness.

Do not however mix issues. Being simple does not mean going for the cheapest mtumba shirts or oversize trousers.

There is some honour in elegance. Grab that new suit or newest boot in town and make ladies break their necks once in a while.

Definition 5: A man owns up his mistakes

Did your woman get you in the act with the “girl next door” and now you simply cannot come to terms with it?

Be a real man. Grasp your mistakes and apologize profusely to your woman.

There is no point of denying something when the writings are written all over the wall.

Be man enough to accept your faults so that next time you can avoid them.

However, if you keep on finding one excuse after the other to justify your misdemeanor, you will never simply grow up!
