(EXCLUSIVE) RETURN ALL UNSPENT CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES’ MONEY IMMEDIATELY, PS KIPSANG ORDERS

(EXCLUSIVE) EDUCATION MINISTRY DEMANDS ALL UNSPENT CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES’ MONEY BACK

Following the recent spike in the number of covid-19 positive cases in Kenya, the Ministry of Education has demanded that all unspent cash, which was set aside for co-curricular activities, be reimbursed immediately.

This move is informed by the fact that by the time schools were shut by President Uhuru in Mid-March, term one co-curricular activities were at the county level.

RETURN ALL UNSPENT CO-CURRICULAR MONEY, MINISTRY ORDERS

CS MAGOHA’S FINAL STATEMENT ON SCHOOLS’ REOPENING

This is disheartening especially for teachers and trainers who dedicated their quality time to train learners this year. It means that trainers should bury any hope of advancing the activities in case schools reopen in September 2020 as proposed by the covid-19 education response team.

DEADLINE

The circular has now directed that all unspent balances for activities that never took place to be refunded back to the state department by June 10, 2020.

“This is to direct that the unspent balances for those activities that never took place to be refunded back to the state department by 10th June 2020 so that the same can be used in other areas,” wrote Dr. Belio Kipsang PS Education.

This announcement has caught county and sub-county education directors unawares and they are now struggling to tie the loose ends of their vouchers and records in a huff.

Confirmed pay day for BOM Teachers and Schools’ Support Staff

Confirmed pay day for BOM Teachers and Schools’ Support Staff

It is now confirmed and Crystal clear that teachers employed by school management boards in public schools and subordinate staff will receive their rightful dues.

This is good news especially for the teachers who have been publicly humiliated with some being forced to take up menial jobs to meet the high cost of living.C

CSMagoha’s announcement yesterday therefore was much welcome.

What makes BOM teachers even more elated is that their pay day is a call away.

These teachers’ pain and agony will be wiped away by next week.

They need not wait any longer since for the the four months, hell has been unleashed upon them.

In reference to education CAS Zach Kinuthia’s speech last week the publication further noted that the stipend was aimed at sustaining the teachers who have so far gone for months without pay.

TSC dispatches deployment letters for P1 teachers posted to secondary: TSC Deployment letters and list of successful applicants per county and region

Latest TSC NewsThe Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has started the process of dispatching a total of 1,000 Deployment letters for primary school teachers following the release of a list of teachers who have been deployed to secondary schools this year. The teachers were deployed effective February.

TSC Deployment Lists per County and Region

For the first time, TSC has had deployment lists arranged per counties and featuring the deployed teachers’ names, TSC Numbers and current working stations following a public outcry over the mystery surrounding the deployments. Also shown in the Deployment list of teachers are the new working stations plus the subjects.

TSC deployment letters dispatched

TSC deployment letters 2021.
In spite of the numerous complaints raised, the Commission has dispatched deployment letters to the 1000 teachers deployed recently. The lucky teachers have been promoted to secondary school teacher II (T-Scale 7) and will now earn a monthly basic pay of between Sh34,955 and Sh43,694 plus allowances.

Unsuccessful applicants expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the latest TSC deployments were conducted.

They accused the Commission of unfairly distributing the vacancies in favour of art teachers who scooped 97 per cent of the 1000 vacancies.

The teachers alleged that science teachers were discriminated against by being given 3% of the vacancies.

Defending itself, TSC clarified the matter saying that the Commission can only deploy teachers to schools where there are vacancies.

Below is a list featuring some of the recently deployed teachers by TSC

TSC REPORT ON BOMET SCHOOL GIRL’S SUICIDE

LAST MOMENTS
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has revealed fresh details concerning a schoolgirl who allegedly committed suicide after being scorned by her teacher after messing her uniform (menses).

Jackline Chepng’eno a 14-year old girl was allegedly overwhelmed by disgrace after a public shaming by her class teacher Ms Chemutai and used a leso to commit suicide. This is according to the preliminary report that the Teachers Service Commission revealed.

SANITARY PADS
When Jackline hung herself on September 6, there were 77 packets of sanitary pads in the school store. According to Dr NancyMacharia, the Teachers Service Commission Chief Executive Officer, Kabiangek Primary school located in Konoin, Bomet is among other schools that received its share of free sanitary pads for term two.

Further details reveal that Jackline was among 50 girls who are eligible for free sanitary pads. Each of these girls had already received two packets for two months that is August and September. Jackeline’s mother, Beatrice Koech also affirmed that her daughter had a full packet of pads at home.

CONFLICTING STATEMENTS
Ms Koech’s statement, however, does contradict that of Jackeline’s class teacher Ms Chemutai.

TEACHER OF ENGLISH SYNDROME
According to the deceased’s mother, her daughter had been ejected by Madam Chemutai, her teacher of English from class and ordered to go home and wash before returning to school.

Before sending her away, Ms Chemutai hurled insults at her and termed her dirty. The tender-aged school girl had expected her class teacher to empathise with her given that she was a woman. Little did she know what rude shock she will be served with.

Ms CHEMUTAI’S SAY
Ms Jenniffer Chemutai has however defended herself in the 42- page Teachers Service Commission report tabled in Parliament. Ms Chemutai denies the allegations levelled against her. She says that she did neither send the girl away nor ridicule her. Instead, she politely and humbly requested her to go home, clean herself and come back for the afternoon lessons.

This she did after realizing that the girl had soiled her dress due to menstrual flow. She took a step further to counsel and comfort the pupil showing her that whatever had happened is very normal. Besides, mistakes occur. All she needs is a bit of “freshening up.” After this, she went straight to the staffroom to get her sanitary pads.

PENCILS
Ms Chemutai had requested all the pupils to use a pencil when writing their compositions that fateful morning. Unfortunately, Jackline was among the few who did not have a pencil. The teacher was thus obliged to prevail upon them to go and borrow from other pupils in the lower classes.

However, Jackline hesitated for a moment and showed signs of discomfort. Madam Chemutai hence forced her to find one. When she stood and walked towards the door, the teacher was taken aback after realizing that the girl had stained her uniform.

She quickly went after her. She comforted the girl before going to get her the sanitary pads. Surprisingly, Jackline defiantly walked towards the gate and attempts to call her proved futile.

COMPULSORY LEAVE
Following Jackeline’s suicide, Ms Chemutai, her class teacher, has been given a compulsory leave. Dr Nancy Macharia has confirmed. This is to give room for fair and transparent investigations.

TSC REIGNS SUPREME IN COURT CASE AS KNUT BAGS ANOTHER MAJOR BLOW; LATEST TSC NEWS

It is in the public domain that all teachers have been directed by their employer, the Teachers Service Commission, TSC to resume work by Monday, September 28, 2020.

What TSC did not clear however is what the teachers who will be reporting earlier than the learners will be expected to do once they resume work.

There are numerous speculations about what the ministry and the Commission expect of its employees from now onwards.

In this article, we shall shed more light on why exactly the TSC and the ministry of education have recalled teachers on very short notice.

Photos doing rounds in the media right now show the sorry state of some of our public schools. In some areas, classrooms have been washed away following the long rains in the past few months.

Other schools are over-congested. Learners, therefore, have to be reorganized in such a way that social distancing and sanitization are achieved once they resume learning.

In those schools where floods have washed away the classrooms, the teachers are expected to ensure that the learners get transferred to other schools in safer grounds to avoid heightening learning inequalities further in the post-Covid-19 era.

The teachers will also mark points within the schools to ensure that learners do not gather in large numbers at any particular point in time.

Besides, it is upon the teachers to ensure that the learning schedule is reorganized to ensure social distancing among other health guidelines.

According to the latest reopening guidelines, every school should come up with a covid-19 response committee to coordinate response strategies in case of an infection.

The committees will comprise five members: a learner/ trainee, a non-teaching staff member, one board of management member,s and teachers.

Teachers in managerial positions on the other hand are expected to conduct sensitization programs for parents, learners, teachers, subordinate staff, and other community members on the importance of hygiene and social distancing in schools and at home at all times.

Parents and the surrounding community will be made aware of their indispensable role in ensuring the health and safety of learners, trainees, and staff.

Learners will be sensitized using age and gender – appropriate information education communication materials on covid-19 prevention and control.

This, therefore, means that school heads will be obliged to develop awareness messages on key infection, prevention, and control measures to promote good hygiene practices.

They will also work hand in hand with school sponsors to provide psychosocial and spiritual support to both learners and staff to help mitigate the psychological impact of the pandemic.

School heads will also be expected to carry out a risk assessment for suitability focusing on space, water, sanitation, provision of meals, and transport of learners and develop mitigation measures.

Teachers, parents, and religious organizations also have a key role to play by ensuring they work closely with the Ministry of Health and the whole institutions’ ecosystem.

Identification of at least one health facility within a 10-kilometer radius and collaboration with county governments to have some health officials assigned to every school for regular health monitoring and sensitization has to be done in time.

Heads are expected to collaborate with MoH through sub-county education offices to identify quarantine centers, at least one in every sub-county in case the pandemic reoccurs.

Extra care should be taken while isolating minors especially the girl child to ensure that children and student’s rights are safeguarded at all costs.

Lastly, teachers are expected to ensure there is a designated room within the institution’s premises for use as a sickbay or temporary isolation if the need arises.
