THIS IS WHY KNEC SHOULD COMPENSATE THE DECEASED TEACHER’S FAMILY

FIND OUT WHY KNEC SHOULD DO BETTER THAN SUPPORTING THE DECEASED TEACHER’S FAMILY IN BURIAL ARRANGEMENT

Cases of teachers collapsing and dying at KNEC marking centres have become rampant since the introduction of working overtime.

According to The Standard, KNEC examiners have been obliged to work for long hours to clear the remaining scripts for Kiswahili Insha and English Composition.

Although KNEC has not revealed what may have led to the death of Mr Muindi (who died yesterday while marking at one of the designated KNEC marking centres) cases of extreme fatigue following long working hours at the KNEC examination centres have been documented.

In 2017, a Chemistry examiner who was part of the marking team stationed at Loreto High School then collapsed and died.

He was teaching at Kiongwani Secondary School in Makueni County.

His colleague linked his death to too much work pressure and exhaustion.

BURIAL ARRANGEMENTS

Although the Kenya National Examinations Council has offered to support Robert Kiua Muindi’s family in the burial arrangements, teachers feel that KNEC should do more.

Robert Muindi, an examiner at one of the KCPE designated marking centres in Nairobi suddenly fell ill and was rushed to PCEA Kikuyu Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The council’s heartfelt condolences to Muindi’s family, relatives and friends for the loss of such a dedicated teacher in the Kenyan Education Sector cannot buy food or pay school fees for Muindi’s children.

The saddest part of it all is the fact that KNEC has done its “duty”- notifying Mr Muindi’s family and the Teachers Service Commission of the predicament.

Mr Muindi’s death came knocking barely two days before the conclusion of the marking of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education.

The KCPE exams results are likely to be released next week.

The processing of results for Multiple Choice papers is already complete since it is usually done by the Optical Mark Recognition exam.

TSC ISSUES MORE GUIDELINES ON THE COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING PROGRAMME, CBL; LATEST TSC NEWS

THIS IS THE CURRICULUM WHICH WILL BE TAUGHT DURING THE COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING, CBL PROGRAM

The Community-based learning program has officially kicked off with more teachers thronging various TSC sub-county offices for registration to beat the Friday deadline.

In some parts of the country such as Murang’ a and Bungoma counties, some learners have begun attending the lessons with teachers and education officials struggling to maintain social distancing to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

MOH officials are also playing a key role in offering the support needed in case learners and/or teachers developed any health complications.

However, in some parts, the exercise is yet to gather momentum. Reports indicate that teachers were only given registration forms to fill their details after which they were told to go home and wait for further direction.

This explains why the Teachers Service Commission has taken it in its stride to give more guidance on the exercise.

The program targets over 10 million learners. All TSC employed teachers will be mapped out and allocated Nyumba Kumi where they will be teaching.

No teacher will be forced to travel to offer community lessons during the pandemic. However, heads of institutions will have to report to their schools at least once a week or when called upon to do so to assist teachers in their venues access teaching materials and to perform other administrative duties.

Teachers are expected to report to their venues daily from Monday to Friday for the exercise. The venues which include various community spaces such as churches and social halls will be identified by the chiefs.

Teachers are expected to engage learners for 4-5 hours after which they will issue a report on the activities carried out to curriculum support officers and sub-county directors of education.

The Commission has further directed teachers to utilize their innovation to capture learners’ attention throughout the sessions.

Proposed learning activities include values, life skills, environmental education, physical activities, education activities, literacy, numeracy, health and fitness, and other academic activities based on the learners’ age and level.

The program will run for an indefinite period since the education ministry has not announced the official reopening dates.

Psychosocial support will also be provided to enable learners to navigate through severe challenges bordering on teen pregnancy, parental loss, sickness, sexual abuse among others.

COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING CURRICULUM

The question many teachers are asking themselves now is what curriculum will be followed to ensure that learners are at par.

This pertinent issue has also been raised by some   KUPPET branch secretaries.

According to the latest TSC guidelines, the curriculum for the community- based learning will be posted by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, KICD next week.

This will make planning easier. However, teachers do not have to stick to the curriculum for they will require a lot of innovation to make learning more interesting and expand learning activities.

This curriculum will not be used to cover the syllabus.

SMASE, STEM TRAINING PROGRAMS

Training sessions aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies of the teachers shall continue. They should not be stopped since they will go a long way in enriching the teaching/learning experience.

TSC Directs Teachers To Be Vaccinated Within 7 Days To Avoid Disciplinary Action

TSC directs teachers to get Covid-19 vaccination within the next 7 days.

While speaking in an event event meant to scale up the uptake of the COVID-19 vaccination among teachers, TSC Ceo urged teachers to be vaccinated before the set deadline.

“All those who are yet to be vaccinated must also take advantage of the current vaccination drive to get the jab ahead of the August 23, 2021 deadline issued by the Head of Public Service Dr. Joseph Kinyua to all civil servants,” said Dr. Nancy Macharia.

Earlier on, the government had cautioned that cases of teachers who will not have been innoculated by the offorementioned date will be treated as indiscipline.

According to data from TSC, 178,734 teachers have been vaccinated with the first dose while 110,342 have received the full dose (1 and 2) as of last Saturday August 14th 2021.

The government targets to vaccinate all the 330,671 teachers on TSC payroll and thousands teaching in private schools.

Although the government had prioritized and identified teachers as frontline workers together with health, police and military officers who were targeted during round one of the inoculations, the number of teachers vaccinated so far is still not impressive.

Dr. Macharia noted that the commission had lost 81 teachers to the deadly virus since the outbreak. On the same breath out of the 549 cases reported, 468 teachers have fully recuperated.

She said: “We have already borne the brunt of COVID-19 and we must not keep going that road any further. So far from 549 cases, we have lost 81 teachers to the virus since it was first reported in the country. Thanks to our full medical insurance cover, 468 teachers have fully recovered from the virus.”

TSC boss further noted that Aon Minet is ready to put its best foot forward in a bid to see to it that all desinated facilities attend to teachers and their dependents in good time.

“As a Commission, we have instructed our medical health insurer to ensure that all facilities that attend to our teachers are fully able to provide fast and quality services to our teachers and their dependents,” she said.

TSC Internship 2023/2024 Application Deadline

TSC Lengthens the Internship Application Deadline

The Teachers Service Commission has extended the Internship Application Deadline. The North Eastern counties’ qualified unemployed instructors have been shunning the region’s teaching chances, according to the Teachers Service Commission.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said in her hearing on Tuesday before the National Assembly Education Committee that the Commission advertised 36,000 positions in December 2022 and hired 35,790 applicants.

However, due to a lack of applicants, there are still 210 openings for intern teachers in the counties of Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa.

She claimed that the counties of Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa still have 174 unfilled positions. No applicants from the three regions responded to the May 2023 re-advertisement for the 210 vacancies, claims Macharia.

According to Macharia, instructors in some places are reluctant to accept internship roles due to job insecurity and poor working conditions.

Over the years, a number of terrorist acts have targeted the North Eastern region, murdering several instructors and sparking discussion over the delocalization approach.

In order to debate the issue of insecurity in the North Eastern region, the MPs stated they would call Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.

We as a committee must be ready to manage this situation due to its significance. The committee determined that in order to solve the issue of insecurity in North Eastern and make sure that teachers are protected, we must summon the CS for internal security.

Since TSC might not have a way out, the Ministry of Internal Security might depress people, particularly our educators, on the subject of insecurity.

Macharia emphasized that in order to minimize the costs associated with relocating teachers to solve the issue, the Commission has made an effort to keep instructors in their preferred subcounty when vacancies occur. The CEO emphasized that everyone who chooses to apply is welcome to do so.

In an effort to draw applicants from the area, “The Commission has been extending deadlines on affirmative action as well as re-advertising the positions numerous times,” Macharia stated.

TSC Extends the Internship Application Deadline

All applicants to North Eastern must fulfill a number of requirements, one of which being their agreement to a three-year term.

The Commission identified and distributed 8, 367 qualified primary school teachers to junior secondary schools in order to further alleviate the teacher shortage in those facilities.

According to Macharia, the application portal for JSS deployment is still active, and teachers who obtain the required qualifications are invited to apply and be deployed on a continuous basis.

Baringo teacher throws baby into fire over paternity dispute; Latest TSC Teachers News

TSC Teachers News: A head teacher in Baringo County has left a trail of destruction and a Hallmark of inhumanity after he allegedly threw a five month infant into fire following a paternity dispute.

The suspect is currently in police custody awaiting to be arraigned in court for the heinous crime.

The teacher hails from Ng’aratuko, Baringo North Sub-County whete he allegedly attempted to kill the baby, following a paternity impasse with his wife.

Biological father

The suspect, who is a school head of a school in the neighbouring Tiaty Sub-County, is reported to have arrived home under influence 7 days ago and threatened to kill the baby, since he is not his biological father.

As a result of his thoughtless actions, the innocent infant in question sustained serious burn injuries on the face and knees and has since been admitted at the Baringo County Referral Hospital in Kabarnet for monitoring and medication.

According to Baringo North Sub-County Police Commander Fredrick Odinga who spoke to the Daily Nation the teacher, who went hiding after the heinous act, was arrested by elders on Monday evening and taken to Loruk Police Station.

“The suspect is in our custody at Loruk Police Station after he was brought in by elders. He went into [hiding] after allegedly throwing his five-month-old baby into the kitchen fire over domestic disputes and will be arraigned to answer to charges of the offence committed,” said Mr Odinga.

Not my ears

According to the mother of eight, her husband arrived home a week ago and threatened to kill the baby saying he did not father him as his ears did not resemble his or those of his relatives.

“I normally sleep in the kitchen with other young children, including the infant. He arrived home at around 9pm drunk, claiming that the baby’s ears didn’t look like his or his kin’s and accused me of infidelity. I thought it was his usual talk as a result of his habitual drunkenness and I rushed to the sitting room to get a plate to feed him thinking it would quell his ranting,” said the infant’s mother.

Baby in the fire

“I heard the baby crying and ran back to the kitchen only to find the door closed from inside. Sensing danger, I screamed to alert the neighbours as I pushed the door. When it finally opened, he was holding a machete while the baby was already in the fire crying. I gathered courage and pushed him to the wall as I struggled to pull the child from the fire,” she narrated while fighting back tears.

Being a remote and insecurity prone village, she spent the night at a chief’s house and the baby was rushed to Marigat Sub-County Hospital the following day where he was referred to Baringo County Referral Hospital in Kabarnet for specialised treatment.

“I have sleepless nights because the baby is crying owing to the injuries. I don’t even know if he will ever see because the eyes were also burnt and part of the nose was also affected. I am appealing the concerned authorities to arrest the culprit for the heinous act inflicted on an innocent child,” said the sobbing mother.

According to the woman, the suspect had previously hit the baby when he was barely three weeks old over the same claims, fracturing his hip bone.

“We have sired eight children with this man. He never complained when I was expecting this eighth child only to issue threats when the baby was born, disputing his paternity,” she said.

Aloe Papa, a doctor at the hospital where the infant is recuperating confirmed that he had sustained 10 degree burns on the face and the knees.

“The infant is currently stable but we are still assessing to see if he will require skin grafting or if it resulted in any complications because the burns extended to the eyes. There is also a history of the child being hit on the thigh by the same person where he sustained a femur fracture,” said Dr Papa.

Justice for infant

Baringo North Children’s Officer Irine Chepkwony said that cases of violence against children are on the rise in the area and promised to follow up the case to the end to ensure that the baby gets justice.

“The suspect is a primary school headteacher who has been entrusted to take care of hundreds of school children. His integrity should be checked because if he can attempt to kill his own child, then how safe are the learners in the school?” wondered Ms Chepkwony.

“We have taken the statements from the mother and we have filed the case at Loruk Police Station. Reports have emerged that the baby was also assaulted by the same person when he was barely three weeks old and it went unreported. We are following the two cases to ensure that whoever is responsible for the heinous acts is charged in a court of law,” she added.

The officer regretted that most families in the remote villages in the region are going through the same predicaments but many go unreported because of high illiteracy levels and retrogressive cultural beliefs.

TSC: Shocking Details Emerge after KESSHA reports the death of 13 Principals barely two months since schools reopened

FEATURED

School Principals in Kenya: It is now nearly two months since schools were partially reopened in the country after a six months long break necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The most recent report by the Kenya SecondarySchool Heads Association (Kessha) is what has puzzled many.

Kessha  announced that 13 principals have so far succumbed to corona since the partial reopening of schools in October.

These revelations come even as more schools reported an increased number of students and teachers who have contracted the virus following the resurgence of the pandemic.

Among the 13 principals who have died is the Tononoka High School principal. 11 teachers also tested positive for the viral disease at Tononoka.

“I want you to know this disease is here and is affecting us. Parents should be vigilant. We advise [you to ensure] children get used to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health,” said Kessha’s chairman Kahi Indimuli who is also the principal at Machakos Boys High School.

Schools are expected to reopen fully in January for second term learning under the disrupted 2020 academic year that is set to end on July 16, 2021.

Schools that have so far been closed duento the pandemic include Kolanya Boys High School in Busia County, Mama Ngina Girls High School, Tononoka Boys Secondary School and Star of the Sea Girls Secondary School all in Mombasa County, and Lporos Primary School in Samburu.

According to the Kenya National Union of Teachers, at least 20 teachers have succumbed to the virus and many others are hospitalised.

On Monday this week, a female form four student at Lureko Secondary School in Mumias West Constituency died of Covid-19 related complications.

How to Check Form One Placement Results Online

Machogu while presiding over the release of the 2024 form placement said parents should download the placement letters directly through the Ministry of Education website.

He said once on the ministry website, one is to search for Form One Placement where they will get the results.

Additionally, one can get to know their placement through the  Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) using the link  https://kemis.education.go.ke/

“I assure Kenyans that this website has been tested and proven and is 100% accurate. It is in operation,” he said.

Machogu said the school choices the learners selected was used among other criteria in the placement process.

“Some students were placed in schools of equivalent standing outside their counties. This includes those from counties with inadequate capacity,” the CS said.

Thus, a learner may end up in secondary school in another county due to inadequate space.

Further, Machogu gave parents assurance that there will be no fee increment come next year as their children join secondary schools.

“ The government is commitment to providing free day secondary education which includes allocation for tuition and operation expenses. The fees charged in secondary schools will remain unchanged in 2024. Schools will continue to receive funds based on accurate enrolment data,” said Machogu.

Those learners who are dissatisfied with the results of their form one placements this year have been advised to seek help online using the MOE online platform
