New Mid-Year KNEC KCSE Examinations 2025

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) will introduce a mid-year series of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination which will be administered in July every year.

This was intimated by Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Migos on Thursday, noting that this targets candidates wishing to repeat their exam, or those who missed it due to unavoidable circumstances.

“Adult candidates may also consider registering for the July KCSE series examination,” he said while releasing the 2024 KCSE results.

2024 (January 2025) KCSE Distribution of Grades Nationally

In a nutshell:

1,693 KCSE 2024 candidates record straight As as 48,333 get E

The number of learners who scored mean grade A in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination improved from 1,216 in 2023 to 1,693 in 2024, indicating a steady rise of top scorers countrywide.

Speaking during the release of the 2024 KCSE results, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba commended the learners and attributed the performance to the new grading system that was implemented in 2023.

In the new system, only two mandatory subjects; Mathematics and one language (either English, Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language) are used to compute the mean grade as compared to the previous structure that considered five subjects across three cluster groups.

He added that the number of candidates with direct university entry qualifications (grade C+ and above) rose to 246,391 (25.53 per cent) compared to 201,133 (22.27 per cent) in 2023.

Further, the number of candidates with grade C- is 476,889 (49.41 per cent) compared to 401,216 (44.2 per cent) in 2023.

Those who attained a D+ and above were 605,774 (62.76 per cent) compared to 526,222 (58.22 per cent) in the previous examinations.

Candidates who scored a mean grade E were 48,333; comprising 20,112 women and 28,221 men.

In addition, 840 candidates’ results were cancelled after they engaged in exam irregularities. A further 2,829 candidates’ results were withheld for suspicion of irregularities pending completion of investigations within 30 days.

CS Ogamba confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken on 91 contracted professionals and teachers who aided in irregularities.

Tough Measures for KCSE 2024 Candidates as Knec Casts Net for Malpractice

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has upgraded its game, bringing into play several new more stringent measures to curb cheating. In case you missed out, get a quick glimpse of these new policies below:

Among the measures are the personalization of the examination papers to ensure each is unique to a candidate, the rotation of supervisors; as well as a ban on phones for the invigilators, centre managers and candidates during exams.

The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will be administered from October 22 to November 22, 2024, while the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) will be held from October 28 to November 1, 2024.

One of the key innovations is the personalization of KCSE question papers for each candidate.

According to Knec, this move is designed to prevent cheating by ensuring that each candidate’s exam paper is unique.

Knec CEO David Njengere emphasized that this measure will also enhance the security of the exams by anonymizing the answer scripts during marking, thereby reducing the chances of malpractice and ensuring fairness in the grading process.

This means that the examiners won’t be able to identify the owner of the script, as it will only contain a signature.

“This measure is expected to boost exam security by anonymizing answer scripts during the marking process. The KCSE question papers will be personalized for every candidate. This will help anonymise the answer scripts during marking. More details on this innovation will be shared with supervisors and invigilators during the Sub- County briefing sessions,” said Dr Njengere.

The new system aims to streamline the marking of the 2024 KCSE exams, set to be taken by 965,501 candidates across 10,755 centers, an increase from 903,260 in 2023.

Additionally, Knec will administer the KPSEA to 1,313,913 candidates in 32,573 centers, bringing the total number of candidates for national exams to over 2.27 million. Knec has also revised the deployment of security officers.

For the KPSEA exams, security personnel will now only be involved in the distribution and collection of exam materials.

However, the standard practice of deploying at least two security officers to each KCSE examination center will continue.

Another significant change concerns the use of mobile phones during exams. All staff involved in exam administration, such as supervisors, invigilators, and center managers, will now be required to secure their mobile phones in lockable desks, monitored by security officers.

This step, Knec said, is intended to minimize any potential misconduct and ensure the integrity of the examination process.

“No phones will be allowed during the opening of the exam papers or while the exams are in progress. Phones will be secured in local desks under the supervision of a security officer, with the center holding the key,” said Dr Njegere.

Ms Antonina Lentoijoni, the Director Staffing, Teacher Service Commission (TSC), emphasised that supervisors and invigilators will not be deployed to examination centers where they have vested interests. Instead, they will be required to declare any affiliations with the centers where they will be assigned.

“They will be required to declare any affiliations with the examination centers where they will be assigned,” said Ms Lentoijoni
Ms Lentoijoni said that they have introduced a rotation system for KCSE supervisors.

Each supervisor will serve at an examination center for only one week before being reassigned.

This strategy is designed to minimize familiarity with the centers and further enhance examination security.

“All KCSE supervisors will be required to serve for only one week at any examination center. They will keep rotating every week. I am confident that even after we have nominated them, none of them will know the centers they will be assigned to. They will be supervised as we sit here today,” said Ms Lentoijoni.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba highlighted that KNEC has expanded the number of distribution centers for KCSE materials by adding 41 new centers which sums up otal to 617, ensuring a smoother and more efficient distribution of exam papers nationwide.

“When we compromise our interventions, we compromise the standards of our certificates, all of us, and that affects our economy, I wish to assure you that the country that the challenges experienced in 2023 in the collection of examination materials for the KCSE twice a day have been addressed by introducing an extra 41 containers,” said Mr Ogamba.

Further, the CS issued a stern warning regarding examination malpractices, urging all candidates, managers, and supervisors to strictly comply with the laid-down examination regulations, cautioning that failure to do so would result in facing “the full force of the law.

“The government shall have no mercy on anyone who will be found engaging in the transmission of examination malpractices,” said Mr Ogamba.

The CS currently, 16,000 classrooms are being constructed to accommodate the new learning requirements. The CS, having toured several counties to monitor progress, expressed confidence that all classrooms will be ready ahead of the 2025 academic calendar.

“We are constructing 16,000 classrooms in our junior schools that will accommodate them in 2025,” said Mr Ogamba.

KCSE 2024 Ranking of Schools List Flagged

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) scrapped the ranking of schools. Although the official list of KCSE 2024 top 100 schools is no longer available on the official Knec portal, dedicated websites and mainstream media houses usually go the extra mile by reaching out to school principals who gladly provide official KCSE mean scores that enable them to draw comparisons and come up with top- performing schools. Although the list may not be comprehensive, the mean scores presented are correct!

According to The Daily Nation for instance, Moi High School Kabarak in Nakuru County topped the list of top performers in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education after posting an impressive mean score of 10.43 in the KCSE results released this year.

The results were released by the CS Education on Monday at Moi Girls Eldoret national school in Uasin Gishu County.

Most top 100 slots in the KCSE 2024 top 100 schools were however dominated by public national and extra county schools.

The official KCSE 2024 distribution of grades for Moi High School Kabarak is as follows: A=62, A-=155, B+=102, B=60, B-=18, C+=4. The school achieved a great milestone after the whole class met the threshold for direct transition to university via KUCCPS.

Mudasa Academy also proved its worth after attaining a mean of 10.4 while Kapsabet Boys came third with 10.2.

Kindly note that the Ministry of Education (MOE) no longer ranks schools but provisional data collected by Nation shows some of the KCSE 2024 top schools in various counties and regions.

This is How KNEC Grades Schools; New KNEC Grading System 2024

Outgoing CS Education Ezekiel Machogu directed the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to review and adjust the university cluster subjects that determine which course a student qualifies to pursue based on their subject performance.

This new directive opened a new window of opportunities for thousands of students who took the 2023 KCSE examinations for they now have a shot at prestigious university courses that were out of reach for their predecessors.

The directive is part of changes in the grading of candidates adopted in September following recommendations by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

“This is as a result of the application of a new grading system that reduced the number of compulsory subjects required to compute the mean grade,” said the CS at the Moi Girls School, Eldoret, during the release of the 2023 KCSE examination results.

“The new reform measure will allow a larger number of students to pursue courses of their choice at the universities, diploma and TVET training at certificate and artisan levels.”

The CS also instructed KUCCPS to conduct awareness and career guidance exercises for last year’s candidates, particularly on the new clusters and funding model.

KNEC RELEASES RESULTS; this list of top 10 counties will shock you!

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) on Tuesday, February 2, announced that 17 out of the 47 counties had a mean score of 50 and above in the recently concluded tests.

The top 10 counties in the assessments are; Nairobi 59.20, Garissa 56.34, Mandera 55.11, Wajir 54.47, Mombasa 54.40, Kiambu 53.79, Kajiado 53.56, Kirinyaga 53.37, Nyeri 53.33 and Makueni 53.29.

“A majority of the low performing counties are in ASAL regions,” reads the report.

The tests were meant to gauge the students’ exam preparedness following the nine-month Covid-19 break.

KNEC has since raised alarm following the failure of KCPE students who are expected to seat their national examination in a month’s time. The examination body indicated that a majority of class 8 learners had performed below average.

“This is evidenced by the substantial proportion of learners who did not attain the minimum benchmark of 50 percent in most of the subject assessed,” reads the report.

In terms of gender, girls outperformed the boys in languages scoring an average of 48.965 percent against 46.08. However, boys outperformed girls in sciences and mathematics.

The report found that students performed poorly in languages hence concluded that the learners did not have the essential understanding skills.

“Of concern are the substantial percentages of pupils not attaining minimum proficiency levels of language skills, yet research has shown that proficiency in reading/language has a bearing on the acquisition of other educational outcomes.”

Students performed poorly in essay based quizzes as opposed to multiple-choice questions.

The report was backed up by education officials who conducted the assessment. They noted a sharp drop in the languages which in previous reports have recorded a high performance.

TSC Transfers 2022/2023 List of Transferred Employees Grants Leave to Teachers Contracted by IEBC to Conduct Polls this August

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC has officially launched a life-saving program that will see teachers above 50 years get deployed to serve in schools adjacent to their homes.

This policy change is highly welcome especially now when most teachers are crying foul after being delocalized two years ago to far flung areas.

Starting January 2022, reliable sources within the Teachers Service Commission intimated that a good number of teachers will be reposted back to schools within their home counties.

The Teachers Service Commission’s sources indicate they may be able to post a significant number of new teachers in their home counties, which is good news for those teachers who were hired in July of this year.

The month of September is when all of the newly hired teachers are expected to start working at their new stations.

However, some teachers may have to wait even longer, as the Commission has indicated that it will post some of them until January 2023.

The TSC’s plan for assigning new teachers calls for them to begin their new jobs in early September.

According to the employment documents submitted by successful TSC recruits, some teachers will have to wait until January of the following year to begin their new jobs.

Delocalization is a policy that the Commission adopted in 2017 and is now under pressure to abandon. Teachers have complained that the program is driving them into poverty.

Already, the newly elected president, Dr. William Ruto, has pledged to put an end to the program of delocalizing teachers . According to him, individuals who are delocalized would be compensated.

Ruto had stated that he will replace the delocalization policy that has been implemented by the TSC with a program that will realize that teachers are a national resource. He will do this in place of the current policy.

Teachers, he said, will have the option of working in any county and school they like. To better oversee Kenya’s educational institutions, he pledged to rebrand the present Teachers Management Institute as the Kenya School of Education.

There will be an increase in the number of entry-level teachers recruited and deployed from the local community.

TSC is now having trouble dealing with the large number of transfer requests that have been submitted by delocalized teachers who wish to return to their home counties.

There was a severe teacher shortage in public schools, and in July 2022, TSC put out a recruiting advertisement hoping to fill that gap by hiring 14,460 new teachers.

The commission had announced that it will fill 5,000 positions and will fill another 8,230 positions with teachers who have left due to natural attrition.

TSC additionally secured 844 full-time teaching vacancies in northern schools. The positions were reserved for local candidates through affirmative action programs.

TSC Delocalization News 2020: TSC Delocalization Lists 2020

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC has released a new list of delocalized teachers for various counties.

This comes at a time when teachers are on indefinite leave following the sudden closure of schools geared by the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus.

The Commission has also made major changes in as far as the appointment of school administrators is concerned.

Two months ago, the Commission decentralized the process of appointing school administrators, triggering speculations that the dreaded delocalizations may hit a dead end.

However, barely two months down the line, some schools have experienced changes after heads were transferred to other stations this month.

The list at our disposal contains a total of 14 schools in Nyamira County whose long-serving heads have been moved in the latest TSC Delocalization.

Two schools will receive newly appointed heads after their Principals hit the legal retirement age, 60.

Kenya Schools Calendar Changes As CS Magoha Shifts This Term’s Mid-Term Break

2022-2023 School  Calendar Changes as CS Magoha Shifts this Term’s Mid-Term Break thus affecting Term Dates

Education News Today; Teachers and parents alike have been caught off guard today following CS George Magoha’s directive demanding the closure of all basic learning institutions effective Tuesday, August 2, 2022, to pave way for adequate preparation for the upcoming August poll elections. This, therefore, means that teachers will be grappling with syllabus coverage once the mid-term break is over and parents will be obliged to pick up their children from boarding schools on very short notice.

“As you are all aware, Kenya is scheduled to conduct its general elections on Tuesday, August 9, 2022. Therefore following further consultations, I hereby convey the government’s decision on the closure of ALL basic education institutions effective Tuesday, August 2, 2022, to Wednesday, August 10, 2022, to ensure that preparations and conduct of the upcoming elections are carried out seamlessly,” read the circular in part.

Schools and parents are therefore advised to ensure that learners from all basic institutions proceed on their half-term break effective Tuesday, August 2, 2022, and resume on Thursday, August 11, 2022.

According to CS Magoha, this communication supersedes any earlier communication on the 2022-2023 school calendar and term dates.

“Following the stakeholders’ consultation, the revised term dates were agreed on in order to cover the remaining two terms of  the 2020 school calendar and stabilize the school calendar by December 2020.” Reads a circular by the Ministry of Education titled;

Kenya Co-curricular Activities Calendar Released

Co-curricular Activities Calendar 2022/2023 Released; School games are back as the Ministry of Education releases the 2022 sports calendar

After a two-year suspension, school games are making a comeback. After the deadly Covid 19 pandemic in Kenya, the games were halted in March 2020. However, the wait is now over, as the Ministry of Education has released the 2022 school sports calendar.

This comes after a stakeholders’ meeting that was held earlier this year. The decision for games Resumption was arrived at during the four-day caucus attended by the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) officials and their counterparts from the Ministry of Education.

Term one games (which comprise athletics, cross country, basketball, hockey, and handball) will be held in June 2022, according to the released calendar.

Term two games (soccer, netball, volleyball, and racquet games) will, on the other hand, be held in the second term.

The national championship for term one games activities has been scheduled for June 18th to 22nd, 2022, in Kabsabet, Rift Valley Region, and will be preceded by an umpires’ and referees’ clinic on June 14th to 17th, 2022

The Sub counties and counties must complete their term one games by June 14, 2022, according to the calendar.

THE GOOSE IS FINALLY COOKED AS KNUT MEMBERS MISS OUT ON FINAL PHASE OF CBA; TSC TEACHERS’ NEW SALARIES

THE GOOSE IS FINALLY COOKED AS KNUT MEMBERS MISS OUT ON FINAL PHASE OF CBA; TSC TEACHERS’ NEW SALARIES

The much anticipated July 2020 pay rise has been effected by the Teachers Service Commission. However, not all tutors will be smiling all the way to the bank as dreamers put it. Most teachers still have nothing to smile about.

The first batch encompasses classroom teachers who right now feel used and dumped by both the Commission and teachers’ unions.

Classroom teachers had their salary increment implemented in two phases only, yet they do the donkey work within the school set up.

If SRC was honest about its findings, most school heads, deputies, and the so-called senior teachers barely know the performance, leave alone the names of the learners.

So this thing called responsibility allowance does not make sense at all. Why is it that most heads bury their heads in the sand like ostriches when things go south within the school.

Why is it that the TSC narrows down to the teacher on duty when dealing with indiscipline cases within the school?

Most of those principals and heads rarely appear in school. They use meetings and all sorts of excuses to justify their absence and indolence.

Secondly, most teachers have been taken aback after finding out that the Commission has not yet promoted them to the next grade, which is from grade C3 to C2.

Some of the comments on social media will leave you perplexed. After serving the Commission for three years, they ought to get automatically promoted to job group L. However; this is not the case since they have to contact the commission for automatic promotion.

WHAT NEXT FOR KNUT MEMBERS AFTER MISSING OUT ON THE JULY 2020 PAY RISE?

As the chosen few are jubilating following the official release of the July 2020 payslips by TSC yesterday, KNUT members are yet to understand where the rain started beating them.

History is repeating itself. With Dr. Nancy Macharia having been reappointed as TSC CEO, KNUT’s future seems bleak.

The once vibrant teachers’ union has now been reduced to a shell after most teachers pressed the red button to avoid missing out on the TSC promotions and salary increments.

What is more disturbing is the fact that KNUT secretary general Mr. Wilson Sossion is officially deregistered and the TSC has remained adamant about its position not to engage a deregistered teacher in any deliberations.

Who will engage the teachers’ employer for the benefit of its members now that its secretary-general has been deregistered? There is only one way out. Session must put the teachers’ interests ahead of his. It is high time Sossion swallowed his pride and came down from his high horse.

It is not an uphill task for him to step aside and allow another official to take over and champion for the rights of the teachers.

In August 2019, KUPPET, KNUT’s rival was honorably invited to a meeting to discuss the fate of 38, 000 diploma teachers in secondary schools. Unlike KUPPET, KNUT has never held any fruitful meeting with the teachers’ employer. Most of the engagements have culminated in court battles that leave the union dented.

KNUT should strategize on how the next CBA will benefit classroom teachers who are the majority to redeem its lost glory.

TSC Issues Circular on 2021 KCPE & KCSE Exams. Read the Full Details Below

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has released an circular touching on the nomination of centre managers, supervisors and invigilators who will be actively engaged in the management of the 2020 KCPE and KCSE examinations set to commence in March 2021.

In this circular dated January 25, TSC boss Dr. Nancy Macharia says the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) now requires details for these key field officers who will man this year’s national examinations.

“In preparation for the administration of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Examinations, the Kenya National Examinations Council would wish to have the details of all the Centre Managers, Supervisors and Invigilators who will be engaged in the activity.” Reads the circular in part.

286, 000 Field Officers to man this year’s national examinations

According to the Council, about 286,000 field officers will be required this year; up from the 170,000 engaged in the 2019 national exams.

“An estimated 286,000 field officers will be engaged on agency basis to facilitate in the conduct of exams in the field.

The field officers contracted for administration of exams will be expected to register online using the contracted professional CP2 system by February 25,” says the Council through a five-page document detailing the preparations that have been put in place to ensure the exams run smoothly.

All the Centre Managers, Supervisors and Invigilators are required to register in the KNEC contracted professional system (CP2) and be deployed by the TSC Sub County Directors to various examination centres. The contracted professional system (CP2) is accessible through the following link/URL: https://cp2.knec.ac.ke.

Further, examination centres with less than fifteen (15) candidates will be entitled to only one invigilator, no centre manager or supervisor should be deployed in such centres. The centre will be hosted by another centre and therefore, Centre Manager and Supervisor of the hosting centre will serve the hosted centre.

Dr. Macharia now directs TSC Sub county directors to to identify, nominate and vet Centre Managers (who must be the head of the institution); Supervisors and Invigilators and deploy them to examination centres using the CP2 system by 26th February, 2021.

The list of examination centres and the number of supervisors and invigilators for each examination centre can be accessed in the Cp2 system
