The TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia lauded the incessant efforts of teachers who took part in preparing the learners for the KCPE national examinations.

Teachers were also ushered into the new competency based curriculum which unlike KCPE, focuses on both school based assessments and TSC County  directors in Vihiga and Taita Taveta were commended for registering all the KCPE 2023 candidates in good time since the afore-mentioned counties did not have cases of late registration.

After he received the covid-19 education committee’s interim report on Friday at the KICD headquarters, CS Magoha threw Kenyans into deeper confusion following his statement on school’ reopening.

Many Kenyans were looking forward to a more specific tentative date for reopening learning institutions in Kenya.

While receiving the report, he declared that the reopening of schools and other learning institutions in Kenya will not be a switch-on-switch-off affair. It will be a cautious, methodical process based on evidence of safety from the Ministry of Health.

SARA RUTO-LED INTERIM COMMITTEE’S FULL REPORT ON SCHOOLS’ REOPENING

The education interim committee presented its findings and recommendations to Education CS Professor Magoha on Friday containing views of various education stakeholders on how best we can reopen schools in Kenya.

The report contains recommendations on the possible mitigation measures that can ensure the safety of learners and teachers in schools once schools reopen.

The Ministry of Education’s next step is to review the report before advising the nation about the term dates and academic calendar.

CS MAGOHA’S FINAL REMARKS ABOUT SCHOOL’S REOPENING

The Ministry wishes to note that the covid 19 situation has become worse at a time when the committee just concluded collecting views from education stakeholders. The infections have hit three-digit figures this week.

Further, the Ministry has projected that coronavirus infections are likely to hit a peak in August-September 2020. The MOE does not take these projections for granted, especially now that more than 350 schools are currently being used as coronavirus quarantine and isolation centers.

The impact of this is that Kenyans should be aware that painful, but necessary decisions will be based on evidence gathered from the Ministry of Education from time to time.

All stakeholders should, therefore, be prepared to face the harsh reality of a likely extended closure of our schools given that the government will never sacrifice the health of our children at the expense of an education that can be offered at a later time when their safety is guaranteed.

Henceforth, the MOE will focus on coming up with strong mitigation measures that will be required in schools once they reopen based on the recommendations of the committee and those provided by the Ministry of Health. As such, the ministry will desist from focusing on school reopening dates and instead give priority to putting solid mitigation measures for the sector ecosystem since the reopening of schools will not be a switch-on-switch-off affair.

Going forward, the ministry wishes to urge parents, guardians, and caregivers to continue guiding their children as they learn from home, including supervising their formal learning through broadcast, online learning currently being aired by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, KICD.”

The CS promised to continue updating the country from time to time on matters education based on the evidence collected by the Ministry of Health.

He also noted that all no rash decisions will be made in as far as schools’ reopening is concerned. All decisions will be made while giving priority to the health and safety of learners, teachers and subordinate staff.

KCSE Results 2023-2024; KNEC Issues Warning Amidst Controversy of KCSE Exam Results

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has issued a  stern warning to purveyors of fake news, cautioning them against spreading false information concerning the KCSE 2023, January  2024 results.

Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, KNEC refuted claims suggesting that it had assessed a student who had passed away before taking the exams.

In response to reports circulated widely on social media, KNEC addressed allegations of grading the deceased student in biology and assigning an ‘X’ for other exams, indicating the student’s absence from those papers.

Kenya National Examination Council’s offices in Nairobi

The exam body categorically labeled the post as false, asserting that the mentioned results did not originate from its official portal.

“This boy reportedly died before KCSE exams began, but somehow he pulled a mama Rosa, resurrected, sat the biology paper, and scored a D-, maybe because he couldn’t revise in the grave because of darkness,” KNEC Stated.

Barely two months ago, the Kenya National Examinations Council released a conflicting report on the recently released KCPE 2023 results.

In a statement to the media Knec indicated that KCPE results were released on Wednesday yet it was 23rd November 2023.

“The Ministry of Education released the 2023 KCPE examination results for 1,406,557 on Wednesday, 23rd November 2023.” A statement from Knec read in part.

The Kenya National Examination Council confirmed to have received complaints from students which it corrected and updated the results accordingly.

“The KNEC Rules of 2015 Legal Notice 131 on the marking of examinations, release of results and certification, Rule 27, provides for candidates/schools to lodge appeals for review of the examination results to the Council in writing within thirty days from the date of release of the examination results.

“In this regard, KNEC received appeals from some affected schools on dissatisfaction on their results as received by candidates/schools through the SMS code 40054.

“It was brought to the attention of KNEC that results for some candidates had misalignment of the marks and grades in Kiswahili as they were at the Kenyan Sign Language.

“There were also cases where the grades in Science and Social Studies & Religious Education were truncated incorrectly and were missing the plus (+) and minus (-) signs as expected.

“The error affected only the SMS results due to configuration issues, as the results in the KNEC portal are accurate. KNEC notified the SMS service provider and the error in the text messages were resolved immediately.” Said Knec.

It continued to say: “KNEC also received queries from candidates with low marks in some of the subjects, mainly in English and Kiswahili. KNEC has reviewed all the appeals and found that there were one hundred and thirty-three (133) candidates affected.

“These cases have all been addressed and results for the affected candidates updated appropriately.”

Knec notes that it has corrected results from the schools which had initiated the complaints on the KCPE results.

“KNEC has studied the KCPE examination results for a school that was widely circulated on social media forums indicating all the candidates in the school attained an identical marks of 75 in Science.

“KNEC has reviewed the results for the school and all the reports that were received from the examination centres and anonymous letters and has not found any indication that the school was involved in examination malpractices.

“Science is a multiple-choice question paper, thus making it possible for the candidates to get identical marks.

“Though this may be assumed to be an examination irregularity, it is not adequate evidence for KNEC to sanction the results for candidates without a supporting report that cheating happened during the administration of examination.”

“Candidates have been advised to visit their schools and collect the official provisional results slips and raise any query for review of their results, if any, within the stipulated 30 days period.”

Reactions:

Gabriel Oguda, a columnist at the standard media group has criticized the Exam bodies over its remarks.

Taking to his X platform formerly twitter, he wrote: “The Kenya National Exams Council has hurriedly released a statement covering their tracks for the incompetence they have shown the country since the KCPE 2023 results were released.

SOME IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE.

FIRST – The KCPE 2023 results were released on Thursday and not Wednesday as claimed here. If the people who released the results don’t even know when they did it, how are we supposed to trust the source of the results themselves?

READ ALSO Arsenal Vs Brighton: Arsenal back to top after the win.

SECOND – The Exams body admits that the SMS Service Provider picked results from a source not related to the KNEC portal. This is a grave revelation that has the potential for a class action suit for parents who spent money on fake results.

THIRD – KNEC admits they awarded wrong results for students who complained, and they’ve since correctly updated the scores.

TRANSLATION: If you feel your child received results they didn’t deserve, please hurry while stocks last.

FOURTH – An entire KCPE class of 50 scoring 75% each in the Science Paper is not cheating according to KNEC. The new term for cheating is COINCIDENCE. You learn a new thing every day.

FIFTH, and most importantly. You wasted your time and money sending SMS to the short code number, when you could just have walked to your school and received the real results that KNEC recognizes.

Thanks for throwing easy money on fake results.

It was nice doing business with you, and see you again when the KCSE 2023 results are announced shortly.”

Pemwai High School 2022 Form One Selection; Admission Letters and List

Admissions: form one selection, application, enrolment rate, criteria, and requirements, admission letters, and placement list

The school admits at least 300 students per year.  This cohort is usually selected by the Ministry of Education to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for all students in Kenya. The selection of students to the school is evenly distributed across all the 47 counties in Kenya.

The main selection criterion when it comes to Form one selection and placement is the students’ previous performance in KCPE results.

Interested applicants should however tender their interest when selecting their preferred secondary schools at the primary level long before the KCPE results get released.

Worth noting is the fact that picking the school as your first choice is not a direct ticket to the institution. Any student who wishes to join the school must attain the pass mark set by the Ministry of Education.

Form one admission: form one selection: criteria, list, and letters (Calling/placement Letters)

Unlike in the past when some parents and school heads could influence the form one selection list, this year’s selection is done by the MOE and it is purely based on the student’s KCPE marks.

Click HERE to access form one school selection system for national schools.

Have you been selected to join this school? Congratulations on making it this far. For a full list of all students who have been selected to join the institution at form one level, you can visit the school’s portal online or the institution.

The number of learners who scored mean grade A in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination improved from 1,216 in 2023 to 1,693 in 2024, indicating a steady rise of top scorers countrywide.

Speaking during the release of the 2024 KCSE results, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba commended the learners and attributed the performance to the new grading system that was implemented in 2023.

In the new system, only two mandatory subjects; Mathematics and one language (either English, Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language) are used to compute the mean grade as compared to the previous structure that considered five subjects across three cluster groups.

He added that the number of candidates with direct university entry qualifications (grade C+ and above) rose to 246,391 (25.53 per cent) compared to 201,133 (22.27 per cent) in 2023.

Further, the number of candidates with grade C- is 476,889 (49.41 per cent) compared to 401,216 (44.2 per cent) in 2023.

Those who attained a D+ and above were 605,774 (62.76 per cent) compared to 526,222 (58.22 per cent) in the previous examinations.

Candidates who scored a mean grade E were 48,333; comprising 20,112 women and 28,221 men.

In addition, 840 candidates’ results were cancelled after they engaged in exam irregularities. A further 2,829 candidates’ results were withheld for suspicion of irregularities pending completion of investigations within 30 days.

CS Ogamba confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken on 91 contracted professionals and teachers who aided in irregularities.

Tough Measures for KCSE 2024 Candidates as Knec Casts Net for Malpractice

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has upgraded its game, bringing into play several new more stringent measures to curb cheating. In case you missed out, get a quick glimpse of these new policies below:

Among the measures are the personalization of the examination papers to ensure each is unique to a candidate, the rotation of supervisors; as well as a ban on phones for the invigilators, centre managers and candidates during exams.

The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will be administered from October 22 to November 22, 2024, while the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) will be held from October 28 to November 1, 2024.

One of the key innovations is the personalization of KCSE question papers for each candidate.

According to Knec, this move is designed to prevent cheating by ensuring that each candidate’s exam paper is unique.

Knec CEO David Njengere emphasized that this measure will also enhance the security of the exams by anonymizing the answer scripts during marking, thereby reducing the chances of malpractice and ensuring fairness in the grading process.

This means that the examiners won’t be able to identify the owner of the script, as it will only contain a signature.

“This measure is expected to boost exam security by anonymizing answer scripts during the marking process. The KCSE question papers will be personalized for every candidate. This will help anonymise the answer scripts during marking. More details on this innovation will be shared with supervisors and invigilators during the Sub- County briefing sessions,” said Dr Njengere.

The new system aims to streamline the marking of the 2024 KCSE exams, set to be taken by 965,501 candidates across 10,755 centers, an increase from 903,260 in 2023.

Additionally, Knec will administer the KPSEA to 1,313,913 candidates in 32,573 centers, bringing the total number of candidates for national exams to over 2.27 million. Knec has also revised the deployment of security officers.

For the KPSEA exams, security personnel will now only be involved in the distribution and collection of exam materials.

However, the standard practice of deploying at least two security officers to each KCSE examination center will continue.

Another significant change concerns the use of mobile phones during exams. All staff involved in exam administration, such as supervisors, invigilators, and center managers, will now be required to secure their mobile phones in lockable desks, monitored by security officers.

This step, Knec said, is intended to minimize any potential misconduct and ensure the integrity of the examination process.

“No phones will be allowed during the opening of the exam papers or while the exams are in progress. Phones will be secured in local desks under the supervision of a security officer, with the center holding the key,” said Dr Njegere.

Ms Antonina Lentoijoni, the Director Staffing, Teacher Service Commission (TSC), emphasised that supervisors and invigilators will not be deployed to examination centers where they have vested interests. Instead, they will be required to declare any affiliations with the centers where they will be assigned.

“They will be required to declare any affiliations with the examination centers where they will be assigned,” said Ms Lentoijoni
Ms Lentoijoni said that they have introduced a rotation system for KCSE supervisors.

Each supervisor will serve at an examination center for only one week before being reassigned.

This strategy is designed to minimize familiarity with the centers and further enhance examination security.

“All KCSE supervisors will be required to serve for only one week at any examination center. They will keep rotating every week. I am confident that even after we have nominated them, none of them will know the centers they will be assigned to. They will be supervised as we sit here today,” said Ms Lentoijoni.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba highlighted that KNEC has expanded the number of distribution centers for KCSE materials by adding 41 new centers which sums up otal to 617, ensuring a smoother and more efficient distribution of exam papers nationwide.

“When we compromise our interventions, we compromise the standards of our certificates, all of us, and that affects our economy, I wish to assure you that the country that the challenges experienced in 2023 in the collection of examination materials for the KCSE twice a day have been addressed by introducing an extra 41 containers,” said Mr Ogamba.

Further, the CS issued a stern warning regarding examination malpractices, urging all candidates, managers, and supervisors to strictly comply with the laid-down examination regulations, cautioning that failure to do so would result in facing “the full force of the law.

“The government shall have no mercy on anyone who will be found engaging in the transmission of examination malpractices,” said Mr Ogamba.

The CS currently, 16,000 classrooms are being constructed to accommodate the new learning requirements. The CS, having toured several counties to monitor progress, expressed confidence that all classrooms will be ready ahead of the 2025 academic calendar.

“We are constructing 16,000 classrooms in our junior schools that will accommodate them IN 2025,” said Mr Ogamba.

KCPE BREAKING NEWS THIS WEEK: FOUR KCPE CANDIDATES WRITE THE NATIONAL EXAM IN MATERNITY WARDS

Four KCPE candidates have been forced to sit for their national exams at separate hospitals after delivering hours to the onset of the examinations.

The candidates hail from Nakuru, Bomet and Nakuru Counties.

In the first incident, the girl from Oloisailal Primary School in Transmara West sub-county completed her first paper at Lolgorian District Hospital after giving birth yesterday night. She was consequently admitted at the hospital’s maternity ward from where she took her examination.

Confirming the incident, the area County Director of Education Philip Wambua said the candidate was in stable condition since she gave birth naturally.

Mulot Primary School in Narok West was neither spared.

A candidate was rushed to the nearest Longisa District Hospital located in Bomet County after going into labour on Friday.

She gave birth last night through caesarian section. The girl sat for the paper after education officials confirmed that she was stable.

In Nakuru County, a similar scenario was experienced at Emitik Primary School in Kuresoi South after a candidate was obliged to write her KCPE at Olenguruone Hospital. She gave birth to a bubbly baby girl.

KNEC Supervisors have since been directed to supply all examination papers at Olenguruone Hospital.
