KCPE and KCSE 2021-2022 Exams to Kick off in two weeks, Results to be Released on Time

KCPE and KCSE 2021-2022 Exams to Kick off in two weeks, Results to be Released on Time

Knec News 2022: The Ministry of Education has set the stage for the 2021 national examinations after issuing the keys for the containers where the KCPE and KCSE 2021 exams material will be stored.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will  use approximately 479 containers to store examinations. The containers are normally based at Deputy County Commissioners’ office.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has stated that more than 200,000 teachers will be engaged for administration and management of both Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams to be conducted between March and April this year.

“In preparation for administration of these exams, the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) requested the Commission to provide details of all centre managers, supervisors and invigilators, who will be engaged in this activity,” said the Commission in a memo to all TSC Regional Directors last month.

TSC County and Sub-County Directors of Education were to identify and nominate centre managers, supervisors and invigilators to be engaged in the administration of exams.

After their identification and vetting, the directors were expected to deploy them into the Contracted Professional (CP) system by February 4.

Class eight candidates will sit their KCPE exams on March 7 while those in Form 4 are scheduled to start their KCSE exams on March 11.

Some 1,225,698 candidates registered to sit the 2021 KCPE, which was an increase of 34,085 compared to 2020.

For 2021 KCSE, there was a 10.42 per cent increase compared to last year. Some 832,026 candidates will sit their KCSE compared to 752,602 last year.

All other classes, from Pre-Primary 1 to Class 7 and Form 1 to 3 are expected to have closed by March 3 to pave way for a conducive examination environment.

Human face

Magoha has constantly affirmed that the exams have been set with a human face and that candidates can handle all the papers.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta directed us that we must ensure exams have a human face and that is precisely what we have taken into account so the children need not be afraid,” assured Magoha.

The CS has also said that the duty at hand is for candidates to prepare themselves to write the exams.

“I want to thank those who have worked with other experts to develop questions, which have now formed the tests for the exams to be done in March and in December,” the CS said.

The CS also assured that the December exams will be ready for administration by the end of next month.

“We are not only going to prepare for exams in March but we also must ensure that whoever takes over the Government next year will find the exam ready and all he will have to do is to implement it,” he said.

All examination centres will have at least 30 candidates, with those with less than the set number merged.

According to Magoha, the merger of examination centres with less than 30 candidates is critical and is part of ensuring efficiency and deterring examination related malpractices.

Magoha said that since 2015, enrolment of candidates in primary and secondary schools, both public and private has increased, which has led to rising costs in terms of payment of centre managers, supervisors, invigilators, security officers and drivers.

This, he said, has been coupled with the high cost of delivering examination materials to schools together with an inadequate number of security personnel to offer security in the examination centres, which has necessitated the change in approach by revising the number of examination centres.

“The Ministry believes that with the reduction of examination centers, monitoring will be conducted more effectively and efficiently to deter the occurrence of examination related malpractices and maintain the integrity of the examination,” said Magoha two months.

Last month, Magoha led senior education officials traveled abroad for the final inspection of the 2021 national exams ahead of shipment.

The exams, which are ready for administration, were expected to be shipped into the country mid this month.

KNEC is gearing up for a tight schedule this year, as it will be expected to deliver five national examinations next year for the first time ever.

The exams are also to be delivered in an election year but the Ministry assured that there will no be changes on the date set for exams.

“This coming year will test whether the transformation we have done at Knec is sustainable or not and the reason is instead of having the two usual exams, we will have five and my orders from the President is that I give all my time to focus on delivery of these exams,” said the CS.

The five exams are 2021 KCPE and KCSE to be written in March while the 2022 KCPE and KCSE and Grade 6 exams are scheduled for December.

“The exams for December will be ready for administration which means it will not matter who takes over as president, we will have delivered what we have to for our children, who are at the centre of all this,” said the CS.

He said the exam is one of the transformative areas and has been successful.

“Six years ago and nobody wanted to be associated with Knec. Now there are many people who will come to see how we are doing it. So forget about politics. Our children going to universities are much better,” he said.

KUPPET demands for Schools to be re-opened by June and proposes new 2020 KCSE & 2020 KCPE national exam dates

KUPPET demands for Schools’ to be re-opened by June and proposes new 2020 KCSE & 2020 KCPE national exam dates

In Summary

After their plea to have 2020 KCSE and KCPE national exams postponed fell on deaf ears, KUPPET has come up with two other proposals regarding syllabus coverage, schools’ re-opening dates, and new examination dates for 2020 KCSE and KCPE national exams.

KUPPET chair Omboko Milemba has jumped the bandwagon to support KESSHA’s proposal that all schools must re-open by June if the national exams have to be undertaken on time.

Besides, KUPPET feels that the e-lessons being broadcast by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, KICD are not sufficient enough to prepare candidates for the national tests.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET has called for the re-opening of all schools by June, 2020 to enable the 2020 KCSE and KCPE exams to be done on time.

In its new proposal, the union has ruled-out the e-learning platform as a way of completing the syllabus in time saying that it will give some learners a more competitive edge than others.

“We as the union had proposed that we postpone the exams. But postponing exams is not just excitement from the union, but one of the drastic measures that can be taken by the union. That is a very drastic measure but we may use it as our last wild card,” said Milemba.

He further discredited online learning as an effective platform for syllabus coverage.

“The truth is that online learning guided by parents is neither here nor there. Rule out that. We cannot count that as a curriculum completion and syllabus coverage, so all learners need to resume school and complete the syllabus,” added Milemba.

He said that if learners resumed school by the end of May or early June then national exams will be done on time.

School holidays

“We lost the month of March, and we are likely to lose the month of May, April as a holiday. That means that we can recover. During the month of August, we make the holiday short and do away with the half term to cover the month of March. November can be used to recover the month of May so that 2020 KCSE and KCPE can be done in December 2020, then we shall be in business.”

New 2020 KCSE & KCPE exam dates

Milemba proposed that 2020 KCSE and KCPE be done in December 2020 to maintain the school calendar.

He said that if the exams were to be done in December 2020, the only thing that will be affected is 2021 form one admission dates but the school calendar will be retained.

He cautioned against the wild imaginations of CS Education Professor George Magoha that learners have been enjoying online learning.

“I think he needs to borrow from the Ministry of Health. An Easy Minister who can consult other players and make decisions without holding it to himself that he is the one to give what is right or wrong” cautioned Milemba.

Male candidates performed better than female candidates in Maths, Science, Social Studies, and Religious Education.

Four counties recorded more male than female candidates this year. They are Turkana, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera.

2. KCPE 2021: the number of adults who sat the exam were 29 607, representing 2.42% of the total population that sat the exam.

The number of adults who sat the KCPE exams this year increased according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

The statistics show that 62,310 adults sat the exams which represent 5.08 per cent of the total candidates’ population.

Last year, the adults who sat the exams were 29,607, representing 2.42 per cent.

The statistics also show that all counties registered an increase in adult candidates from last year.

The results were released on Wednesday December 16, 2022 by Education CS Ezekiel Machogu at Mitihani House in Nairobi.

The statistics also showed that the number of candidates who were 12 years and below declined.

Machogu said that the number dropped from 33,627 (2.74%) in 2021 to 31,498 (2.53%) in 2022.

The CS said that the decline shows that children are enrolled in school at the right age.

KCSE Results 2021/2022; How KCSE Performance in Sciences Can be Boosted

BLOOMS IS THE WAY TO GO FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE IN SCIENCES DURING KCSE EXAMINATIONS

The Dust On 2020 KCSE Perfomance Has Still Not Settled and Even If It settles We Still Have another Storm Coming When 2021 Exam Is Released In May Next Year.

There Shall still Be An Outcry in the perfomance Of Sciences. We Shall Still Lament, “Had It Not Been For Chemistry, Math And Biology, WE Could Have Done Better”.

Looking At The Sciences, Teachers Did Alot And Prepared Students so well but they made one grave mistake that cost them results-They never focused on BLOOMS TAXONOMY.

According To BLOOMS, A Standard Exam Must Test six core skills :Recall, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation. Those Setting Science Subjects Have Fully Embraced That. Also Science By Its Very Nature Lends itself To Testing Higher Level Skills.

For Many Years Maths Was the Only Subject That Was Poorly Perfomed. Chemistry and Biology were Better Perfomed.

This is Because Maths Has Never Tested Lower Level Skills. You can never Get an A Mathematics Exam Asking Students To Define, State, Mention, Outline, Explain etc. The Action Verbs In Mathematics Exams Has Alsways Been Evaluate, calculate, Find The Value Of etc.

Now the Setting Of Chemistry And Biology Is Fully Embracing BLOOMS Taxonomy. In the recent exam 56% Of Text Items Tested Higher Level Skills. Average Students Were Left With 44 Marks To Battle With. By The Start Of The Exam They Already Could Not Score Above C.

Higher Level Testing Is still The Same Case With Biology Where Students Are Being Tested On How To Interpret, Analyze, infer and Apply Concepts As opposed To Memorazation Of Facts.

The Whole Of Last, Champions Kept Singing About Emerging Trends In The Setting And Marking Of KCSE and Matters BLOOMS Were One Of the Choruses .

The Only Certainty I Know Is The Schools Will Still Perfom Poorly In The Sciences Until The Day They Shall Start pressing BLOOMS Button.

Let Science Teachers Press That Button. Let Science Teachers Study Action Verbs that Test higher Level Skills and Start using Those Action Verbs In Setting Internal Exams.

For How Long Shall They Continue Ignoring This Basic Fact Knowing Well Enough That Is the Route KNEC Has Taken.

Wether They Like It Or Not They Shall Go Round And Round The Mountain of Average Perfomance Till The Day They Shall Start Applying BLOOMS.

A Careful Study Of KNEC Reports and A Revision Of Past KCSE Papers Will Help Expose Students To The Nature Of Exams To Expect. Sample Bloom Questions Are A button Away In Google.

Chemistry and Biology Can Still Be Perfomed Well. Let Us not create a picture That These Subjects are Tough. Almost Every School In This Country Had An A In Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.

Don’t Say Even School So Did Not Perfom Well In Biology, We Have Many Schools In This Country That Got A Mean Score Of 8 And Above.

When You Visit The Science Departments In Those Schools And Look At Their Internal Exams You Won’t Find Test Items Like Label The Part Marked X. Internal Exams Are Set Inline With BLOOMS and So Students Are Equipped With Analytical Skills From Early Time.

To The Science Teachers, The Sun Shall Not Rise Again unless You Become proactive and Master The standard Practices In The Setting Of Science Exams Where BLOOMS Must Be The Standard Benchmark

The top candidate in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) scored 431 marks out of the possible 500.

Speaking at Mtihani House in Nairobi on Wednesday, December 21 when he released the results, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said this year’s candidates performed better than last year’s where leading candidate scored 428 marks.

CS Machogu, however, did not name the top candidates during the official release of the results.

KCPE marks per category

A total of 9,443 candidates scored 400 marks and above while 307,756 scored between 300 and 399 marks.

Some 619,593 candidates scored between 200 and 299 marks while 296,336 candidates got between 100 and 199 marks.

A total of 724 candidates scored between 1 and 99 marks.

A total of 1,244,188 candidates sat the examination countrywide.

This is the second-last KCPE exam, with the last 8-4-4 cohort set to complete primary school next year giving way to the first cohort under the competency-based curriculum (CBC).

The 1.2 million Grade Six learners who sat the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) will however know their results next month, since their grading will no longer be required for Junior Secondary School (JSS) placement as previously anticipated.

The Government said KPSEA will not be used for placement in JSS, which have now been domiciled in existing primary schools.

Instead, the assessment will instead be used to monitor learning progress and provide feedback to education sector players on areas that require intervention.

The decision is in accordance with the interim report by the presidential working group on education reforms.

KCPE marking uses personalized Optical Marker Readers (OMR) to facilitate machine reading, where the answer sheets are personalised  to know which belongs to a specific candidate.
