New Mid-Year KNEC KCSE Examinations 2025

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) will introduce a mid-year series of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination which will be administered in July every year.

This was intimated by Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Migos on Thursday, noting that this targets candidates wishing to repeat their exam, or those who missed it due to unavoidable circumstances.

“Adult candidates may also consider registering for the July KCSE series examination,” he said while releasing the 2024 KCSE results.

2024 (January 2025) KCSE Distribution of Grades Nationally

In a nutshell:

1,693 KCSE 2024 candidates record straight As as 48,333 get E

The number of learners who scored mean grade A in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination improved from 1,216 in 2023 to 1,693 in 2024, indicating a steady rise of top scorers countrywide.

Speaking during the release of the 2024 KCSE results, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba commended the learners and attributed the performance to the new grading system that was implemented in 2023.

In the new system, only two mandatory subjects; Mathematics and one language (either English, Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language) are used to compute the mean grade as compared to the previous structure that considered five subjects across three cluster groups.

He added that the number of candidates with direct university entry qualifications (grade C+ and above) rose to 246,391 (25.53 per cent) compared to 201,133 (22.27 per cent) in 2023.

Further, the number of candidates with grade C- is 476,889 (49.41 per cent) compared to 401,216 (44.2 per cent) in 2023.

Those who attained a D+ and above were 605,774 (62.76 per cent) compared to 526,222 (58.22 per cent) in the previous examinations.

Candidates who scored a mean grade E were 48,333; comprising 20,112 women and 28,221 men.

In addition, 840 candidates’ results were cancelled after they engaged in exam irregularities. A further 2,829 candidates’ results were withheld for suspicion of irregularities pending completion of investigations within 30 days.

CS Ogamba confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken on 91 contracted professionals and teachers who aided in irregularities.

Tough Measures for KCSE 2024 Candidates as Knec Casts Net for Malpractice

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has upgraded its game, bringing into play several new more stringent measures to curb cheating. In case you missed out, get a quick glimpse of these new policies below:

Among the measures are the personalization of the examination papers to ensure each is unique to a candidate, the rotation of supervisors; as well as a ban on phones for the invigilators, centre managers and candidates during exams.

The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will be administered from October 22 to November 22, 2024, while the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) will be held from October 28 to November 1, 2024.

One of the key innovations is the personalization of KCSE question papers for each candidate.

According to Knec, this move is designed to prevent cheating by ensuring that each candidate’s exam paper is unique.

Knec CEO David Njengere emphasized that this measure will also enhance the security of the exams by anonymizing the answer scripts during marking, thereby reducing the chances of malpractice and ensuring fairness in the grading process.

This means that the examiners won’t be able to identify the owner of the script, as it will only contain a signature.

“This measure is expected to boost exam security by anonymizing answer scripts during the marking process. The KCSE question papers will be personalized for every candidate. This will help anonymise the answer scripts during marking. More details on this innovation will be shared with supervisors and invigilators during the Sub- County briefing sessions,” said Dr Njengere.

The new system aims to streamline the marking of the 2024 KCSE exams, set to be taken by 965,501 candidates across 10,755 centers, an increase from 903,260 in 2023.

Additionally, Knec will administer the KPSEA to 1,313,913 candidates in 32,573 centers, bringing the total number of candidates for national exams to over 2.27 million. Knec has also revised the deployment of security officers.

For the KPSEA exams, security personnel will now only be involved in the distribution and collection of exam materials.

However, the standard practice of deploying at least two security officers to each KCSE examination center will continue.

Another significant change concerns the use of mobile phones during exams. All staff involved in exam administration, such as supervisors, invigilators, and center managers, will now be required to secure their mobile phones in lockable desks, monitored by security officers.

This step, Knec said, is intended to minimize any potential misconduct and ensure the integrity of the examination process.

“No phones will be allowed during the opening of the exam papers or while the exams are in progress. Phones will be secured in local desks under the supervision of a security officer, with the center holding the key,” said Dr Njegere.

Ms Antonina Lentoijoni, the Director Staffing, Teacher Service Commission (TSC), emphasised that supervisors and invigilators will not be deployed to examination centers where they have vested interests. Instead, they will be required to declare any affiliations with the centers where they will be assigned.

“They will be required to declare any affiliations with the examination centers where they will be assigned,” said Ms Lentoijoni
Ms Lentoijoni said that they have introduced a rotation system for KCSE supervisors.

Each supervisor will serve at an examination center for only one week before being reassigned.

This strategy is designed to minimize familiarity with the centers and further enhance examination security.

“All KCSE supervisors will be required to serve for only one week at any examination center. They will keep rotating every week. I am confident that even after we have nominated them, none of them will know the centers they will be assigned to. They will be supervised as we sit here today,” said Ms Lentoijoni.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba highlighted that KNEC has expanded the number of distribution centers for KCSE materials by adding 41 new centers which sums up otal to 617, ensuring a smoother and more efficient distribution of exam papers nationwide.

“When we compromise our interventions, we compromise the standards of our certificates, all of us, and that affects our economy, I wish to assure you that the country that the challenges experienced in 2023 in the collection of examination materials for the KCSE twice a day have been addressed by introducing an extra 41 containers,” said Mr Ogamba.

Further, the CS issued a stern warning regarding examination malpractices, urging all candidates, managers, and supervisors to strictly comply with the laid-down examination regulations, cautioning that failure to do so would result in facing “the full force of the law.

“The government shall have no mercy on anyone who will be found engaging in the transmission of examination malpractices,” said Mr Ogamba.

The CS currently, 16,000 classrooms are being constructed to accommodate the new learning requirements. The CS, having toured several counties to monitor progress, expressed confidence that all classrooms will be ready ahead of the 2025 academic calendar.

“We are constructing 16,000 classrooms in our junior schools that will accommodate them in 2025,” said Mr Ogamba.

China’s Wuhan lab denies knowingly manufacturing and spreading the coronavirus

China’s Wuhan lab denies knowingly manufacturing and spreading the coronavirus

With the coronavirus death toll rising especially in the US, resentment and anger have not been left behind.

On Saturday, the US President Donald Trump insinuated that China should face dire consequences, if it knowingly manufactured and allowed the spread of the dreaded covid-19 which is now wreaking havoc across the world.

According to Chinese scientists, the coronavirus most likely originated from a market where exotic animals were slaughtered but conspiracy theories do not seem to read from the same script.

According to the theories, the virus was manufactured at a maximum-security virology lab from where it spread to the whole world.

Currently, independent investigations into the exact origin of the virus are underway.

Yuan Zhiming, the head of the P4 lab where the covid-19 was allegedly manufactured has however dismissed the allegations saying that there is no way the virus came from them.

In an interview with the State media Mr Zhiming said that he knows it is impossible.

Protests

This comes even as some US citizens took the streets to protest against lock-downs that have consequently led to joblessness.

The number of coronavirus positive cases has risen to over 735, 000 in the US with over 39, 000 people succumbing to the coronavirus.

On Saturday, hundreds of Americans flooded the capitals of Maryland, Hampshire, Texas and Ohio with some waving arms and others the American flags to show their dissatisfaction with the stay-at-home orders.

The protesters were encouraged by President Trump who tweeted that three states should be liberated from the lock-down.

Other countries currently under lockdown are Italy and Spain whose death tolls are over 20, 000 and France with over 19, 000.

Signs of victory over the pandemic have on the other hand been seen in some countries such as Switzerland, Denmark and Finland where schools and shops have been reopened.

Germany is also likely to get back to her feet after some shops were reopened on Monday.

KCSE Results Now Ready as Examiners Start Clearing from Knec Marking Centres; Expect Results as from Friday (This is how you can receive your official KCSE 2020 Knec Results)

Latest news reaching our newsdesk this afternoon on the awaited for release of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE 2020 national exams indicate that the necessary measures have been undertaken to meet the May 10,2021 deadline set by the Education Ministry.

This is after reliable sources-KCSE 2020 Knec examiners revealed that the marking exercise for most KCSE 2020 Candidates’ scripts is complete.

The majority of the Knec Contracted Professionals are in the process of cross checking Candidates’ scores before they can officially clear and leave the designated Knec marking centres spread across Nairobi Metropolitan area.

Some of the KCSE 2020 scripts which have already been marked as of Sunday May 2, 2021  include History, CRE paper one, Chemistry Paper II, and Mathematics Paper II.

The marking of English Paper III, 101/3 which is the most rigorous and time consuming is almost complete.

The Examiners contracted to mark this paper have given their best shots to ensure that Results are released as scheduled.

They are expected to leave their marking centres by Tuesday May 4, 2021.

This means that the KCSE 2020 Examiners would have marked the over 700,000 scripts for Knec registered candidates within a record time of 14 days.

Moderation(Standardization) of KCSE 2020 Knec Results

Once the marking is done, the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC will take a few days to standardize learners’ scores .

This is a Mathematical process that is designed to eliminate variable elements from test scores thus enabling candidates to be compared without bias.

Moderation of KCSE Results thus involves giving equal values to the results of each test irrespective of the number of questions and the time allocated for completing them. That is why an A in Mathematics is lower than an A in CRE.

Girls Vs Boys Performance

In the 2022 KCPE, female candidates performed better than their male counterparts in three languages among them English, Kiswahili, and Sign language.

Male candidates performed better than female candidates in Maths, Science, Social Studies, and Religious Education.

Four counties recorded more male than female candidates this year. They are Turkana, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera.

Key Statistics and Figures in KCPE 2022:

1. KCPE 2022: 62 310 adults sat the KCPE exam which represents 5.08% of the total candidature population.
2. KCPE 2021: the number of adults who sat the exam were 29 607, representing 2.42% of the total population that sat the exam.

The number of adults who sat the KCPE exams this year increased according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

The statistics show that 62,310 adults sat the exams which represent 5.08 per cent of the total candidates’ population.

Last year, the adults who sat the exams were 29,607, representing 2.42 per cent.

The statistics also show that all counties registered an increase in adult candidates from last year.

The results were released on Wednesday December 16, 2022 by Education CS Ezekiel Machogu at Mitihani House in Nairobi.

The statistics also showed that the number of candidates who were 12 years and below declined.

Machogu said that the number dropped from 33,627 (2.74%) in 2021 to 31,498 (2.53%) in 2022.

The CS said that the decline shows that children are enrolled in school at the right age.

Teachers worried as learners drop guard against Covid 19 in schools; Latest education news

Teachers concerned as learners disregard virus prevention measures in new schools’ reality; Education News

Latest reports hitting our newsdesk now indicate that learners are now “at home” in as far as the Covid-19 pandemic is concerned.

School heads say that the pandemic no longer bothers learners who have resorted to follow the MoH guidelines only when the teachers are around.

The Social Distance Headache  in Schools

Both primary and secondary school heads have confirmed that enforcing the Covid-19 protocols is an uphill task since the majority of the leatnets have dropped their arsenal.

It is only three weeks now since the partial reopening of schools and the coronavirus scare is no longer an issue among learners, with reports indicating that learners have returned to their normal school life which encompasses socializing, walking in groups etc.

CS Magoha Set to Hold a Crisis Meeting Next Week to Chat the Path towards full school reopening

This comes even as Education Cabinet Secretary ProfessornGeorge Magoha said plans are underway to convene another stakeholders’ meeting next week to discuss the fate of other learners who are still at home.

“We are going to meet as stakeholders soon and as government and when time comes we may have to be bold enough to tell you when the rest of schools shall open,” said Magoha.

Magoha further added that even with Covid-19 infections surging, the government is considering opening schools for the rest of learners.

“Yes, Covid is spiking and it is not only in this country. What we are grappling with is whether to open for the other children or not,” said Magoha.

The Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (Kessha) Chair Kahi Indimuli reported that most learners are neither routinely washing their hands nor wearing masks with the seriousness they did when schools were reopened.

Learners no longer observing social distancing guidelines

It has also emerged that the social distancing guideline is no longer being observed since learners have reverted back to their old habits.

“These learners now think that after two weeks in school without any infections they are now good to go and can overlook some guidelines,” said Indimuli.

Consequently, teachers are now having a hard time trying to enforce the social distancing rules among learners in schools.

“Most learners are not wearing face masks, they do not care so much about proper use and hygiene of the masks and they also do not wash hands as frequently as it were before and this is a the new challenge in schools,” said Indimuli.

In boarding schools, children are no longer observing social distancing in their dormitories or classrooms.

“In the absence of teachers these learners just interact as if it is back to normal,” said another school head.

These disturbing revelations come at a time when the virus is wreaking havoc with some counties such as Nakuru experiencing an acute shortage of ICU beds for Covid 19 patients.

Primary school heads also expressed concerns of ill preparedness to handle Covid-19 as the numbers continue to surge.

Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association (Kepsha) Chairman Nicholas Gathemia said schools are yet to be provided with mitigation measures to handle challenges.

Gathemia said teachers have not been sensitised well enough on management of Covid-19 in schools.

“This poses a high risk to both the teacher, parents and learners daily,” he said.

According to the ministries of Health and Education, schools are expected to monitor Covid-19 symptoms by checking temperatures of students often and looking for signs such as coughing, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, chills, muscle ache and headache.

Kepsha said primary schools have for a long time been overlooked and discriminated in disbursement of free education funding, which has stagnated at Sh1,470 per pupil annually for almost 20 years.

According to Gathemia, this money is paid in three phases and comes late in the term.

“This hinders early preparation for teaching and learning and at the end results in under covering of the syllabus,” he said.

Experts warned that re-closing schools means returning children to the possibility of community infections and uncertainty over scheduled March examinations and transition of the learners.

Even though recalling the rest of learners to schools will guarantee transition to next classes and help manage many social ills such as drug abuse and early pregnancies, the fear of infections in schools is also real.

But teachers who spoke to the Saturday Standard said children are safer in school.

CS Machogu’s Speech During the Release of KCSE 2023 (January 2024) Results

When requested to take the podium, CS Machogu confirmed that FSE and FPE funds have hit school accounts. He also confirmed payment of all KNEC contracted professionals, including examiners.

He applauded the new system of distributing KCSE examination materials since it curbed cases of exam malpractice.

He acknowledged the challenges faced during the administration of the KCSE national examinations including banditry and the heavy el-Niño rains.

He thanked the Almighty God and all key stakeholders for attending the KCSE 2023 Results release ceremony.

Supplementary Examination

Since Knec has only traced 2000 KCPE candidates who did not sit for the national examinations, the CS sanctioned principals to allow the learners join form one without sitting for KCPE examinations. However, these learners will have to take a qualifying examination before they join form three.

Looming Crisis as TSC is Forced to Readvertise Teaching Vacancies: Latest TSC News

Looming Crisis as TSC is Forced to Readvertise Teaching Vacancies: TSC News

Vacant teaching posts in various learning institutions are usually announced by the Teachers Service Commission.

The slots can be havazardously categorized into two: fresh recruitment whereby the government creates new employment opportunities annually and replacement through which teachers who have exited service through natural attrition or for any other reasons are subsitituted to bridge the teaching gaps left behind on a termly basis.

The Teachers Service Commission recently advertised over 11000 teaching vacancies in both primary and secondary schools in Kenya.

The exercise reportedly attracted 300000 applicants and is now over with the successful candidates now waiting for their TSC probationary appointment letters.

However, even as other schools wait for the probationary letters to come from TSC, there are some other schools which could not attract suitable candidates to match the required subject combinations.

In such instances, the schools have an option of either changing the combination or Re-advertising the chances to see whether they can attract candidates.

TSC Advert for Taita Taveta Schools

Teachers employer, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has re-announced job vacancies for teachers.

Teachers employer in Taita Taveta County recently announced teaching job vacancies in four secondary schools from four sub-counties.

Qualified teachers registered with TSC are required to send their application before or on 30th, October 2020.

In a memo shared on social media by celebrated media personality Billy Miya of Radio Maisha this Tuesday, TSC released the advert a few days ago.

“Teachers Service Commission Taita Taveta County invites application from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following teaching posts for the schools below,” read a meme from TSC, Taita Taveta County.

Where to drop your applications

Your applications should be dropped at a school where the subjects you majored in are advertised as shown below.

Murray Girls, where a home science and music teacher is needed. The school is located in Mwatete Sub-County

Chala Secondary School, a computer teacher is needed. School located in Taveta Sub-County

Dr Aggrey School located in Taita Sub County where a Computer and Physics teacher is required

Our Lady of Perpetual (OLOPS) High School in Voi Sub County where Kiswahili/Music combination teacher is required.

“Eligible candidates should meet the following qualifications: Be a Kenyan Citizen, Must be registered as per TSC act 2012, Must be a holder of a minimum Diploma in education,” TSC added.

Interested and qualified candidates are supposed to send their applications on or before 3oth October 2020.

Just as the radio presenter said “All the best Fam!” we also wish you, applicants, best of luck in their profession.

This is what must have happened with some schools in Taita Taveta county having been forced to Re-advertise the teaching vacancies

The worst affected teaching subject combinations border on technical areas, KNEC Group four subjects.

These encompass Music, Agriculture, Computer, and Homescience.

But how did TSC end up there?

The Genesis of this crisis can be traced back to the year 2016 when the Kenya national examination Council introduced new stringent measures in conducting national KCSE exams to curb cheating.

The rampant vice, cheating in national exams has since been eliminated but some subjects are yet to recover from strict marking which has consequently being blamed on several occasions for the poor perfomance in technical subjects.

With the majority of the candidates posting dismal grades in high school, most students don’t meet the minimum criteria for taking courses in the affected subjects at tertiary level, hence promoting a crisis of teacher shortage.

According to a report dubbed the status of university Education in Kenya 2019 by all vice Chancellors of Kenyan Public universities, the few numbers of students taking these courses is a wake-up call to all the key stake holders.

“If no one is getting into agriculture courses, how will the country realise food security now and in the future?” posed Prof Daniel Mugendi Njiru of the University of Embu who read the report on behalf of the VCs.

The report recommends the lowering of entry grades to these courses and Kenya national examination Council to relax marking rules during national marking.

Besides, the report also recommended that agriculture be made compulsory since it’s a strategic subject in achieving of vision 2030.

Latest TSC Recruitment Criteria

With TSC requiring that a teacher must at least score C+ in the subjects of choice, many candidates get locked out leading to shortages of tutors.

It now a sit back and watch scenario to see whether TSC will bow to pressure abd relax tough conditions to encourage more teachers to take these subjects in order to to a evert a crisis.

KUPPET’S TOUGH TALK ON TEACHER SALARIES AND KNEC WORKING CONDITIONS

This year’s Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers Annual General Meeting was centred on the Kenyan teacher’s general welfare ranging from administration of national KCSE exams to massive delocalization of teachers and administrators.

KUPPET’s Annual General Meeting was held yesterday at Kenyatta University, Kitui Campus. The high- level meeting brought together 1, 000 delegates and some invited teachers.

KNEC’S POOR WORKING CONDITIONS FOR KCSE EXAMINERS
Some of the issues that the unionists discussed include poor living conditions and low KNEC payment rates for 2019 KNEC KCSE examiners.

Speaking to The Saturday Standard, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori and National Chair Omboko Milemba said the AGM will call for a complete change in the way national exams are administered with teachers’ welfare being the central focus.

Misori further added that KUPPET has complained about the plight of teachers during the administration and marking of national exams but the government has not given the matter enough weight.

According to Misori, KCSE examiners are forced to sleep in “funny” dormitories, queue for hours on end to get a shower and use pathetic toilets.

Some of the KNEC examiners are also obliged to share beds or sleep on the floor due to inadequate beds.

Despite these harsh conditions that examiners are subjected to, they continue to get low pay for the indispensable role they play.

KUPPET thus challenged KNEC to broaden reforms to cover the entire national exam management system.

Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
Besides KNEC’s poor working conditions and poor payment rates for KCSE examiners, the AGM also discussed the upcoming full roll-out of the current 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA and the commencement of talks for the next CBA which will be characterized by a 70 per cent salary increment for teachers.

On salary increment, KUPPET has already suggested a 30-70 per cent salary increment and harmonization of allowances for all teachers for the next CBA (2021-2025).

QUALITY KCSE EXAM MARKING
KUPPET’s national chair Mr Milemba, on the other hand, faulted the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC for hiring cheap labour for this year’s marking exercise to beat the “deadline.”

He said that quality marking should be separated from “artificial” timelines since KCSE marking is not a marathon race. Quality is very important.

TSC DELOCALIZATION

The union also discussed the looming massive transfers of primary school headteachers and principals.

KUPPET said that teacher’s age, marital status and health conditions should be considered before being delocalized.

According to Misori, the government should not separate families or separate terminally ill teachers from their primary care-givers.

KUPPET ON TSC INTERNS
Misori also said that much as the union acknowledges the fact that the government is straining financially, they are opposing the employment of TSC interns.
Instead, KUPPET opts for the employment of TSC teachers on permanent terms.
