How to Select Grade 10 Subjects and schools

To select Grade 10 schools and subjects under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya, Grade 9 learners should first choose a career pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science). Then, they’ll select three subject combinations within that pathway and finally, choose four schools for each combination, totaling 12 schools. To select preferred Grade 10 Schools and Subject Combinations, use the Ministry of Education portal selection.education.go.ke.

  1. 1. How you can Choose a Career Pathway:

    • Identify your interests and potential career aspirations.
    • Select one of the three pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science.
    • Confirm your choice to proceed with the pathway.

  2. 2. Select Subject Combinations:

    • The portal will provide you with a list of subject combinations available within your chosen pathway.
    • Choose three subject combinations that align with your interests and strengths.

  3. 3. Select Preferred Senior Schools:

    • For each subject combination, select four schools from the available clusters.
    • This ensures a diverse range of options and equal representation from different categories of schools.
    • A total of 12 schools will be selected: 4 for the first subject combination, 4 for the second, and 4 for the third.

Topping the list of KCSE most improved schools during the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education KCSE 2021 Kaaga Girls High School with a KCSE performance index of 73.98 up from a KCPE mean of 22.38. The schools registered 37 candidates. In the second position came St Joseph’s Girls- Kitale with a performance index of 71.57 up from a KCPE mean of 21.22. The school registered 71 KCSE candidates.

i. The Principal Logs in with the senior school UIC credentials.

ii. Declare Grade 10 capacity.

iii. Select and submit subject combinations for at least two pathways, where STEM is compulsory (the minimum number of learners per subject combination is 15).

iv. The Sub county Director of Education approves the subject combinations of the schools in his/her area of jurisdiction.

v. If a combination is not approved the senior school can delete the record and select another subject combination.

About TSC Internship Recruitment 2021-2022

Teachers who make it to the list of newly recruited teacher interns are required to write a commitment letter and sign a commitment form indicating that the teacher will serve in the school he or she will be posted to for a minimum period of one year.

Female TSC teacher interns are not expected to apply for maternity leave during the one year TSC internship period but KUPPET has committed to look into the matter and negotiate for maternity leave for the aforementioned teachers now that their counterparts employed on permanent and pensionable terms have already started enjoying an extended maternity leave amounting to 120 days as opposed to the previous 90 calendar days following the signing of the new non-monetary Collective bargaining agreement CBA 2021-2025.

TSC Internship Contract Renewal 2021-2022

Once the one year period lapses, the Teachers Service Commission automatically renews the internship agreement with the respective teacher for another year until the teacher gets absorbed on permanent and pensionable terms.

The evidence of renewal of a TSC Internship Contract is entailed in a letter sent to the affected teachers upon expiry of the one year period.

The Teacher will continue serving in the same institution for as long as s/he has not landed greener TSC pastures.

TSC Internship Salaries Release for Newly Recruited Teachers 2021-2022; New Terms and Conditions for Release of Teacher Interns’ Salaries

The Teachers Service Commission set new conditions for the release of salaries for newly recruited teacher interns.

The mandatory requirements include provision of pay point particulars or details that are provided in a form labelled TSC Pay point particulars form and submission of a casualty (entry/ exit) report showing that the newly recruited teacher intern has reported to the school they have been posted to.

Lack or omission of a teacher intern’s pay point particulars will automatically pave way for complications culminating in delayed release of salary- monthly Stipend.

There have been numerous complaints bordering on missing TSC Casualty Forms at the TSC headquarters despite school heads and principals presenting them to the respective TSC sub county directors of education for forwarding. The most commonly affected teachers hail from some  schools in Rift Valley. This issue was brought to the limelight after some newly recruited teachers confided in us revealing that their salaries were delayed for up to five months whereas their counterparts who were recruited at the same time but posted to schools in other sub counties had already received their monthly stipends.

This is frustrating especially to newly recruited TSC teacher interns especially with the ever increasing  high cost of living.

To avoid such scenarios, newly recruited TSC interns are henceforth advised to ensure that the school head sends the casualty form in time- once they have reported to their new stations, before 10th so that their details can be captured in the TSC payroll in preparation for salary processing.

Secondly, ensure that your pay point particulars form is correctly filled.

It appears that the recent announcement by the Teachers’ Service Commission to continue paying teachers’ salaries and implement the last phase of the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA at the end of July 2020 (which will see some teachers, especially school administrators, earn higher salaries ) did not sit well with some key players.

Following the “big” announcement, some quarters were a beehive of activities deliberately aimed at ensuring the Commission slashes, pay subsistence only or reassign duties to tutors to justify the over 20 billion monthly pay for the next six months.

“As of now, there is no plan to stop paying teachers. This is because it is not the teacher who has refused to go to class; schools are closed due to Covid 19. If the teacher is called upon to resume teaching, they will do so the following day, so long as the conditions are right,” said Beatrice Wababu, TSC Director of Communications last week.

This is the announcement that seems to have opened Pandora’s box. Last week, social media was awash with complaints about teachers earning undeserved pay. What captured our attention was a deranged argument by Protus Onyango, dubbed “TSC employed teachers to continue enjoying their full pay despite being idle.”

This argument is not only scornful but also disrespectful to the teaching profession. Consequently, teachers termed the headline disparaging and inciting with some calling for a boycott of any Standard Newspapers and KTN News Channel until the media house apologizes for the misdemeanor.

In my opinion, this is a miscalculation by The Standard especially now that the media House signed a pact with one of the giant teachers’ unions, KNUT to allow teachers to subscribe for newspapers at a subsidized cost.

In the new deal, interested tutors would access all daily and weekend editions of The Standard Newspaper, The Nairobian, and other publications at a subsidized fee.

The war against teachers’ full pay did not however end with The Standard Media reporter Protus Onyango. Major players have now jumped the bandwagon to force TSC to pay teachers subsistence allowances as opposed to full pay or an alternative be sought to justify teachers’ pay. Otherwise, the continued pay will amount to stealing from the public coffers.

Subsistence allowance refers to money paid to workers for basic needs like food, housing, etc. popular TV and radio stations are suggesting that it is wrong for teachers to continue earning while doing nothing. They have now shifted the blame to the teachers’ employer, TSC for paying “idle” employees.

This heightened debate has culminated in ridiculous suggestions such as reassigning teachers’ roles so that they may be used in other national projects like bridge and road constructions.

Others suggest that teachers be used in mitigating the effects of covid 19 such as increased teenage pregnancies.

Our take right now is clear. The debate on whether teachers’ salaries should be paid is uncalled for and malicious. Remember that teachers get paid money that is only enough to sustain them, unlike reporters who can easily invest without necessarily applying for loans. Most teachers cannot afford luxury suites like Protus Onyango and the rest. So please, leave teachers alone. Just like the TSC put it, TEACHERS HAVE NOT REFUSED TO GO TO CLASS. IF CALLED UPON TO RESUME TEACHING, THEY WILL DO SO THE FOLLOWING DAY, SO LONG AS CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT!

To select Grade 10 schools and subjects under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya, Grade 9 learners should first choose a career pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science). Then, they’ll select three subject combinations within that pathway and finally, choose four schools for each combination, totaling 12 schools. SELECTION OF PATHWAYS AND SENIOR SCHOOLS

• Determination of pathways per senior school
• Determination of vacancies for boarding and day schooling in senior schools
• Selection of pathways, subjects’ combination and schools by grade 9 learners Selection based on pathway

The learner will select 12 schools for their chosen pathway as follows.
– Four 4 schools in first choice track and subject combination
– Four (4) schools in second choice subject combination
– Four (4) schools in third choice subject combination (Total 12 schools) Selection based on accommodation

Out of the 12 schools selected based on pathway;

  • 9 will be boarding schools; 3 from the learners’ home county, 6 from outside their home county/county of residence.
  • Three (3) day schools in their home sub county/sub county of residence. (Total 12 schools)
    Pre selection – A school that does not allow open placement can apply to be pre-select if it meets the criteria defined by the Ministry of Education.

How Placement of learners to Senior Schools (SS) at Grade 10 will be done

It will be based on:

  • Top 6 learners per gender in each STEM track per sub-county will be placed for Boarding in  schools of choice
  • Top 3 learners per gender in each Social Science track per sub-county will be placed for Boarding in schools of choice
  • Top 2 learners per gender in each Arts and Sports Science track per sub-county be placed to Boarding schools of their choice
  • Placement of Candidates with Achievement Level of averaging 7 and 8 per track to boarding schools of their choice

Admission and replacement process

  • Placement results will show where learners have been placed
  • Admission letters/joining instructions shall be accessed online using the learner’s assessment Number.
  • All schools, both public and private shall admit Grade 10 through KEMIS
  • Leaners will be entered to the KEMIS System only after reporting physically to the school.
  •  Daily online reporting shall be monitored through KEMIS

Replacements

  •  Schools with vacancies will declare through their respective county directors of education
  •  Learners who wish to change schools will make requests through the heads of junior schools at least 2 weeks before the official grade 10 reporting date
  • Priority shall be given to those who had earlier selected the schools they are requesting for  Approvals by MoE shall be based on senior schools’ documented capacity
  • Upon a request’s approval, the joining instructions shall be accessed online; at no time shall a school issue printed letters for replacement cases
  • Replacement will be done once and shall be irreversible

KCSE 2023 Results Out! This is how KCSE 2023 Candidates will Access Exam Results- Through a Website not SMS.

The marking of the KCSE 2023 examinations is complete. KCSE 2023 examiners left the designated KNEC  marking centers on Thursday having submitted KCSE 2023 candidates’ scripts and raw scores for further processing. Now all eyes are trained on KNEC officials who are expected to release results any time soon.

The latest details reaching us at newspro indicate that Ezekiel Machogu, cabinet secretary for education, has made it clear that the ministry intends to introduce a new website where the public may view the results of the KCSE exam.

 

In his testimony before a parliamentary committee on Thursday, Machogu stated that KNEC will do away with the SMS code and replace it with a website that will allow candidates and parents to view their results at no cost.

 

Machogu conveyed remorse for the preventable difficulties encountered in obtaining KCPE results and underscored the need for such problems to cease.

 

He gave an example of an earlier instance in which the decision to terminate the services of an outside contractor was made because the contractor had not met the necessary requirements.

 

 

It implies that we won’t be able to employ the same service provider going ahead when we announce the KCSE results. He continued, “I am already interacting with ICT to see if we can create a website.

 

Acknowledging technical issues with the system, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) recently apologized for the delays in making the 2023 KCPE results available.

 

 

Exam council informed those who tried to view their results that they will receive updates via a special SMS service (40054).

 

 

Parents have had access to their children’s national exam results via the KNEC website or an SMS number over the years.

 

How to Access KCSE 2023 Results Online

In order to get their results via SMS, candidates must transmit their index number to a designated code, followed by the initials KCPE/KCSE (in capital letters).

The release of KCSE examinations is not the end but just a transition period. Student should be ready to move to the next level. Students who have achieved the required cutoff points to Join University under government sponsored will start doing revision as communicated by the Kenya Universities and College Central Placement Service (KUCCPS)  in January ahead of 2022 September intake.

Those who have not met the cut-off to join university are advised to apply to join technical institutions.

In Kenya today, it is important for students to join other colleges and training centers for Skill Based Short Course before they join university and other institutions

Counties with More Male KCSE 2022 Candidates

Fourteen counties had more male than female candidates in the 2022 KCSE examination compared to 17 counties in 2021. These encompass: Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Turkana, Samburu, West Pokot, Kajiado, Narok, Homabay, Migori, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera.

Counties with High Gender Parity in Favour of Female Candidates in KCSE 2022 

Seven counties with high gender disparity in favor of female candidates during the 2022 KCSE examination encompass Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Kitui, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Vihiga, and Kisumu.

 KCSE 2022 Results Performance per Subject

 

In the 2022 KCSE Examination, 17 subjects recorded a significant improvement in performance, compared with 11 subjects that recorded a significant improvement in performance in 2021.

 

There was no significant change in performance in four of the subjects offered during the 2022 KCSE Examination.

 

OVERALL GRADE DISTRIBUTION IN 2022 KCSE RESULTS

There were 1,146 (0.13%) candidates who obtained an overall Grade A in the 2022 KCSE Examination compared with 1,138 (0.14%) candidates in 2021.

 

On the other hand, the number of candidates with minimum university entry qualification of Grade C+ and above has risen to 173,345 (19.03%) in the year 2022 KCSE Examination

compared to 145,776 (17.55%) in 2021.

 

The number of candidates with a mean grade of D+ and above in the 2022 KCSE Examination is 522,588 (59.14%) compared with 442,251 (53.29%) in 2021.

 

Encouragingly, the number of candidates obtaining a mean grade of E in 2022 declined significantly to 30,822 (3.49%) despite the increase in candidature, compared with 46,151 (5.56%) in 2021. This clearly leads us to conclude that most of the candidates scored grades of higher quality.

 

Most significantly, all the remaining candidates are legible to join TVET institutions, Teacher Training Colleges, Medical

Training Colleges and other tertiary learning institutions for various courses.

There were 190 (8.80%) candidates with special needs who obtained an overall grade of C+ and above in the 2022 KCSE examination.
