KIJABE BOYS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Kijabe Boys High School was established in 1939 when the Missionaries concerned with literacy began a form of teacher training. In the year 1950 Kijabe became a college for teachers before it was transformed into primary school for boys. In 1962 it was converted into a boarding high school for boys.

In 1957 a boarding primary school for girls was started and later changed into a boarding girl’s high school. In 1964 the girls and boys were amalgamated into one, which grew into a three-streamed school from form one to form six offering science, arts, and technical subjects. In 1987 the school was split into a boy’s high school and a girl’s high school.

Shortcut to faster TSC employment

Perhaps you have been tarmacking too long after graduating with your Diploma or Bachelors Degree in Education. Maybe your efforts to get employed by the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, have been in vain after attempting several times. And you are at the blink of giving up on the teaching profession. You are not alone my dear friend. There are thousands of graduate teachers out there who find themselves in this precarious situation. I met this graduate teacher, sometimes back, who was so desperate for TSC employment. The teacher was willing to pay the price if only there could be assurance of clinching that elusive TSC job. After many years of attending interviews, in vain, the teacher was so disappointed that all this while there was no chance of getting into the TSC payroll.

Many desperate graduate teachers have fallen prey to conmen and women who promise to deliver TSC employment leeters. Truth be told these fraudsters have no connections at the Commission and hence end up piling more misery on the desperate job seekers. The process of recruiting teachers in Kenya is crystal clear and in fact it is done in a transparent manner. The process is flawless and one is allowed to launch a complaint to the Commission head office if she/ he is shortchanged during the recruitment process.

Here are links to the most important news portals:

But, did you know that you can enhance your chances of getting TSC employment ahead of your competitors? It is so easy. Consider the following and maximize your chances.

TSC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Before you dive into the teaching profession, ensure that you have read and understood the current minimum requirements for one to be certified by TSC. For example, if you are intending to pursue a Bachelors of Education Degree Programme you must have scored a minimum of a C+ in each of the two teaching subjects you wish to teach at high school. This requirement has locked out many graduates. For instance, if want to be a Maths/ Physics Teacher then you must have a minimum of a C+ in each of these two subjects. Again, it is prudent that you choose your teaching subjects carefully.

In short, select the two subjects where you have performed well. This is because in case of a tie during the TSC recruitment interviews, then the panelists will consider the performance of the tying applicants at KCSE. For complete information on all the current TSC registration and recruitment guidelines, click on this link; New: Academic and Professional Requirements for Registration of Teachers.

SUBJECT COMBINATION

The subjects you choose to study at the university or college play a significant role in terms of how fast you will be absorbed by TSC. I never to to say this but some subjects are more marketable than others. This is simply because some subjects are flooded with unemployed graduates. Some of the most marketable subjects, currently, can be found on this link; Most Marketable TSC Subjects, Best TSC Employment Subjects, TSC employment readily availabe.

PERFORMANCE AT KCSE AND UNIVERSITY/ COLLEGE

Your KCSE mean grade sometimes come in handy during TSC recruitment sessions. In case two applicants tie, then the panelists will have a look at the candidate with stronger KCSE certificate. Strength of your diploma or degree certificate also plays a key role on the marks you garner, according to the latest TSC Recruitment guidelines and marking scheme.

PARTICIPATION IN CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.

Applicants who actively participate in Co-curricular activities have a upper hand in clinching TSC slots. Try to at least participate in one or two Co- curricular activities and ensure you are certified or given a recommendation letter to that effect.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMES

The Commission has enlisted the services of teachers working on the internship programme. In the past, such teachers have had an added advantage over their colleagues since TSC produced marking schemes favouring the Intern teachers.

PRESENTATION AND FIRST IMPRESSION

The first impression you create lasts longer. Be smart during interviews. Try to be eloquent. Above all be sincere.

YEARS STAYED OUT AFTER GRADUATION.

Unfortunately, or fortunately I should say, the current TSC recruitment guidelines and marking scheme favours graduates who have stayed out longer. The longer you stay out the more marks you are awarded.

Finally, do not give up. Never pay fraudsters who give false employment promises.

List of all Universities in Kenya; University Codes and Category

Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. It is the same body that selects and places students to higher learning institutions; Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics. To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. An academic year at the university takes two semesters of three months each.

Each University has a short code; that is particular for that institution. There are two categories of Universities in Kenya; Private and Public Universities. The difference between the two is that public universities are managed by a team appointed by the responsible Government agencies.

Here is a list of all universities in Kenya offering programmes approved by the Kenya University and College Central placement service (KUCCPS):

Teachers’ Fresh salaries, promotions; Details of the 2021-2025 TSC- KUPPET Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA)

TSC latest news on 2021-2025 CBA: The teachers’ boss Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been relieved of the guilt fanned by the fact that classroom teachers received a raw deal in the previous CBA. This follows the Parliamentary Education Committee’s intervention that revoked SRC freeze of salary increment for teachers and other civil servants for the next four years last week.

TSC recently reached an agreement with KUPPET on matters TSC salary rise for classroom teachers.

According to Kuppet’s proposal, classroom teachers are set ‘reap big’ from the new CBA after receiving a raw deal in the previous one. See the latest presser from Kuppet on the 2021-2026 CBA talks at the Naivasha retreat in March 2021.

KENYA UNION OF POST-PRIMARY EDUCATION TEACHERS PRESS STATEMENT AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE KUPPET-TSC RETREAT AT THE NAIVASHA SAWELA HOTEL FROM 14 TO 18 MARCH 2021
KUPPET has held a very fruitful four-day retreat with the Teachers Service Commission to resolve policy and administrative challenges of the 2016-2021 CBA and review the status of negotiations for the new one for 2021-2026. This was the second retreat between KUPPET and the TSC, the first one having taken place in October/November 2019.

During the talks, it was clear that the union and the employer had undertaken their responsibilities under the CBA process. What remains is for the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to give its Advisory to the TSC to enable the employer to table a counter offer to the union. We are seriously concerned by this delay by SRC, since the expiry of the current CBA on 30 June is fast approaching.

1. NEW CBA TO GIVE TRUE WORTH OF CLASSROOM TEACHER
KUPPET and the TSC have developed new Job Descriptions capturing the true worth of a classroom teacher. The new Job Descriptions recognise the teachers’ leadership and technical work within and outside the classroom, which had been ignored by the evaluation tool previously used by the SRC.

There are up to 30 new roles of the classroom teacher, including:
(i) Class management
(ii) Substantial financial responsibility during outdoor activities like tours and sports.

In the new CBC curriculum, a teachers’ work will even be more complex.

2. PROMOTION OF C3 TEACHERS AND TTC TUTORS
The Job Re-Evaluation has resulted in the creation of a new opening in C4 for Senior Master IV and Senior Lecturer IV for those in TTCs who do not have administrative positions. At the moment, the Commission has advertised 6,680 vacancies for these cadres as the first step towards institutionalising C4 as a promotional grade from C3.

Under the CBC, the TTC tutors will be training teachers at the Diploma level, hence the repositioning of their roles. Administrators in TTCs including Deans and Registrars will have a clear career path with substantive appointments.

3. DIPLOMA TEACHERS
The career path for Diploma Teachers has been clarified. By the commencement of the 2016 CBA on 8 November 2017, more than half of teachers who had joined service at Job Group had obtained Bed degrees and transited to the Graduate Scheme of Service.

Among those who had not, those who had served for more than three years in one Job Group had been promoted to the next Job Group, i.e., Job Group k or L, under the common cadre promotions.

However, a small number of the teachers, who had served in one Job Group for less than three years, had their promotions following the scrapping of one common cadre promotional level. Following the union’s memorandums, the Commission has advertised positions specifically to this group of teachers. We understand that the Commission received fewer applicants than the number of vacancies it declared.

4. MATERNITY LEAVE FOR INTERN TEACHERS
The Commission agreed that, except for specific provisions of their contracts, all intern teachers will work under the same conditions as provided under the Code of Regulations for Teachers. The intern teachers qualify for maternity leave of 90 calendar days with effect from the expected date of delivery, as do other teachers.

5. POLICY ON POST-GRADUATE QUALIFICATIONS

The Commission agreed to suspend the requirement of a Master’s degree for Principals or other promotions within the teaching service. This is in line with regulations by the Public Service Commission which has scrapped the requirement of a Master’s degree for promotions at Job Group P and above. Post-graduate qualifications will be considered as an added advantage.

The union, however, demanded the introduction of a Post-Graduate Allowance for teachers who possess Master’s and PhD degrees irrespective of their position in service.

6. REDEPLOYMENT OF GRADUATE TEACHERS FROM PRIMARY
In readiness for the new CBC curriculum, the Commission will promote 1,000 graduate teachers who initially had P1 qualifications to secondary schools every financial year. By June 30, it shall have redeployed 2,000 of such teachers, and the redeployment will continue until the numbers are fully addressed. The teachers must have obtained a KCSE mean grade of C+ and C+ in two teaching subjects.

7. TEACHERS’ MEDICAL SCHEME
The meeting observed the numerous problems teachers face in accessing health services under the Medical Scheme. It was agreed that an inter-parties meeting between the TSC, Minet and KUPPET would be held soon to discuss the issues and recommend solutions.

Return all the transferred non-local teachers from Garissa over insecurity- TSC asked

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has been asked to revoke the recent transfers of all non-local teachers from Garissa over insecurity. Ijara Constituency Member of Parliament Hon.Sophia Abdi Noor has castigated the Commission for taking unilateral decisions by transferring the teachers and leaving learners from the North Eastern Region unattended.

“I have today (Tuesday February 4, 2020) joined my fellow leaders from,Garissa, Wajir and Mandera to discuss the insecurity in the region and the mass exodus of the teachers from the region initiated by the TSC unilaterally without consulting the leadership and even their agents in the field. Whereas we condemn in the strongest possible terms the inhuman acts of terror we as a country should not have fallen into their traps by transferring all the TSC teachers in the region without replacement and in the process creating an educational crisis. We are strongly asking the TSC to revoke all the transfers immediately,” says Hon Abdi.

This comes after TSC announced the transfers of all non-local teachers from Garissa County over insecurity related issues. The Commission is at the same time processing the transfers of teachers working in Mandera and Wajir counties. The transfers have been occasioned by the constant attacks from the terror group Al-Shabaab. The group has been unleashing terror attacks on the non local teachers since 2018.

But, the Legislator now says the local leaders will work closely with the communities’ members to ensure security of the teachers. “On our part as leaders we will encourage our communities to share timely information and intelligence with our security forces so that we can secure our borders,” She adds.

Angry ijara residents have been staging protests (since Monday) over the mass transfers of the teachers from the area.
“The Ijara residents express their disappointment and dissatisfaction with the Commission and the Government in general. While the residents already suffer greatly in the hands of the outlawed terrorist group, the reactive decisions often made rub salt onto the wound,” Hon Abdi explains.

The MP is said to have allegedly stormed the local TSC office and locked it on Monday.

According to her, Parents are worried that the TSC’s decision to transfer teachers will only worsen the already dire education and security situation as idle children will now be exposed to radicalization. She says the decision will further encourage the terror groups in conducting more heinous attacks as the Government now appears “ weak.”

Teachers who have fled the region have vowed never to go back.

New TPAD 2 Lesson Attendance Summary Sheet: Free Form Download

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, expects tutors to teach a minimum of twenty seven (27) lessons per week. This, though, depends on individual school’s Curriculum Based Establishment. Consequently, different teachers plying their trade in various schools have varied numbers of lessons per week. This is also due to variations in staffing at different learning institutions. A teacher (secondary school level) at the same time is expected to teach two subjects; expect those handling subjects like English.

The teachers are appraised under the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) by using the Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) tool. The Commission has developed a lesson attendance monitoring tool referred to as ‘TPAD Lesson Attendance Summary Sheet’. This form is to be filled weekly by the teacher’s appraiser.

This sheet is used to capture the name of teacher, Number of lessons expected to be taught per week, the actual number of lessons taught and number of lessons recovered. Lessons can be missed whenever a teacher is away on official duty or permission. The lost time can be recovered during remedials as may be arranged by the teacher.

Information recorded on this sheet is used to update the teacher’s TPAD data.

Confirmed:TSC to Hire 12,000 Teachers on Internship Ahead of 2021 School Re-opening
LATEST EDUCATION NEWS 2020

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has stated it’s urge to hire more teachers to aid in the 100% transition process in the coming year. That’s before 2021 schools Re-opening.

TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia tabled a report during a two-day consultative forum with National Assembly Education Committee whereby she said that they immediately require Sh25 billion to effectively prepare for schools opening, which has been pushed to January next year.

While tabling The report she said that the Commission plans to hire 12,000 additional intern teachers ahead of the opening.

This move will bring to 23,574, the total number of teacher interns hired since last year.

TSC requires Sh17 billion to hire some 26,000 teachers to manage high schools enrollment under the 100 per cent transition. It also needs Sh8.1 billion annually to hire 12,500 teachers to plug the normal shortage.

Macharia told MPs the Commission had projected to employ 12,500 teachers annually for the next five years to mitigate the shortage in the country.

“However, this target has not been met due to inadequate budgetary provisions,” she said.

Macharia also said that under normal staffing, the commission needed 50,504 teachers to support the existing staff establishment.

“Instead, the commission has so far only employed 23,700 teachers since 2017,” she said.

In the current financial year, the commission received a budget of Sh2.5 billion to employ 5,000 teachers.

Under the Economic Stimulus Programme, the commission was allocated a further Sh2.4 billion funds to engage 12,000 interns.

Macharia told MPs that there is an urgent need to meet the right staffing levels amid the Covid–19 pandemic that continues to cause challenges in learning.

Also as part of schools reopening plans, TSC said it will train some 118,000 teachers next month on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at a cost of Sh1 billion.

“The commission intends to prepare teachers for eventual re-opening of schools through training, capacity building, sensitisation and induction programmes,” Macharia said.

The training is aimed at ensuring successful implementation of the new Curriculum.

Last year, the commission trained 339,752 teachers under the CBC at a cost of Sh400 million. Of these, 113 223 teachers – 22, 417 of them from private schools – were trained in April.

In August, 105,030 teachers were trained 21,495 of them from private schools.

And in December, 121,499 teachers, including 23,143 tutors from private schools, were trained.

During the meeting, it also emerged that some 55,000 teachers have been promoted this year, with another 3,900 scheduled for interviews.

Commission data shows that some 460 teachers have already been interviewed and will get promotion letters soon.

The committee members expressed concern over the duration some deputy principals have served as acting head-teachers and asked TSC to determine a maximum period for such cases.

The MPs also proposed the need to develop a policy on the promotion of teachers who have attained the required qualifications to head institutions.

They emphasised that fairness must be key in all promotion exercises. The MPs also raised concern over the transfer of teachers, especially school principals and head-teachers.

Citing multiple schools in their constituencies that have experienced a great turnover at the management level, the MPs said the transfers affect operation of the schools.

Macharia, however, said that all vacancies are filled competitively with the objective to promote national values, fairness, non-discrimination and equity.

“The criteria used in promotion of teachers include the availability of budget/funds; the existence of vacancies in the authorised establishment; merit and ability as reflected in the teacher’s work performance; academic and professional qualification among others,” she said.

Offenses

Besides the promotions, some 1,165 teachers have been punished for various offences.

Macharia said most teachers have faced disciplinary process for insubordination, immoral behaviour and desertion of duty.

Others, she said, were punished for the negligence of duty and examinations irregularity, criminal offences, chronic absenteeism, fraud and forgery and engaging in corporal punishment.

The TSC boss told MPs that the commission has successfully determined cases through video conferencing since August 2020. She, however, said that TSC needs Sh60 million to implement the Teacher Induction Mentorship and Coaching (TIMEC) programme.

The programme allows mentors/coaches and mentees to interact at an institutional level while at the same time continuing to perform their normal teaching duties.
