2020 KUCCPS Student’s Portal Log in (https://students.kuccps.net/): How to ensure you make correct choices

Welcome to the 2020 KUCCPS Student’s Portal. The portal is now open for 2019 KCSE candidates to revise their course choices.  Did you know that most KCSE students make wrong choices when selecting their preferred degree and diploma programmes. Some students end up missing out on their courses and institutions of preference.

To ensure that you clinch a vacancy in the preferred course and institution it is prudent that you put the following into consideration:

  • Cluster points: The KUCCPS system has calculated the cluster points for each student for all the available programmes. For instance, the cluster weights for the 23 Degree clusters have been populated for you and are available at your Dashboard on the student portal (Once you log in).. In some clusters you may find that you have 0.00 cluster weight. Thus, you need to be very keen when selecting a degree programme. For each programme respective universities have different cluster requirements. Select a programme in that university that requires an equivalent or lower cluster weight/ points. Ensure you download and review the latest Degree Cutoff points pdf guide from the KUCCPS site.
  • Subject requirements: Each degree programme has its own subject requirements. Before selecting the programme, ensure you meet its minimum subject requirements.
  • Competitiveness of the Programme and University: Some courses and universities are very competitive. Selecting such courses and/ or programmes exposes you to stiff competition from other students. It is advisable that you check on your performance before applying for such courses.
  • Available vacancies: Each course has a declared capacity in the institutions offering it. Please check the declared vacancies before applying for the course. A course with limited vacancies puts you at risk of missing out on the first and second revisions. Note that if you miss out on the first and second revisions then KUCCPS will place you in any programme that would be having unfilled vacancies after the revisions.

TSC Pension Processing Status 2021/2022: TSC streamlines pension records, merges the department with human resource to speed up process

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC is actively involved in the processing of pension for teachers who have attained the mandatory retirement age which has been set at 60 years.

A pension is a retirement plan for employees which requires an employee to make contributions to a pool of funds to shield them once their active service lapses.

Good news to Retired Teachers as TSC Merges two Key Departments to Speed Up Pension Processing Status

The Teachers Service Commission has merged two of its key divisions in a move meant to speed up the processing of pension records for thousands of teachers who retire annually.

The move is meant to knock out bureaucracies that have been blamed for delays in the processing of pension details for teachers before they are forwarded to the National Treasury’s Pensions Department for payment.

An average of 2,000 teachers in TSC’s payroll retire annually.

In a document released by TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia, the human resource management division has been merged with the pensions department.

“This will create seamless and efficient service delivery from entry to exit of all teachers employed by the commission,” it says in what is a marked departure from the past system where teachers had to shuffle from one department to another while making pension claims.

Lack of harmony between the two departments and the national Treasury has been blamed for failure to synchronise data leading to inordinate delays sometimes running into years after formal retirement.

These delays have resulted in teachers dying before they could claim their benefits while others have resorted to courts to have their money paid.

With the restructuring which took effect two months ago, the merged departments have been renamed as units and will “align all human resource processes from entry to exit, serving as a one-stop-shop for all human resource-related matters.”

“All communication from teachers will be channelled through the county directors’ offices and all county human resource officers will work with sub-county directors to ensure submission of records to do with salary payments from entry to exit, conformation of appointment, performance appraisals, pension claims and gratuity,” says the circular.

Pension and gratuity payouts hit Sh20.44 billion in the last financial year as the Treasury raced to clear a court award to a group of retired teachers who retired in 1997.

Figures from the Controller of Budget reveal that the value of benefits paid out to civil servants rose by 33.33 per cent in July-September 2020 from Sh15.36 billion for a similar period the previous year.

The rise was attributed to a court ruling that led to the revision of pension claims for teachers who retired between 1997 and 2003.

The High Court in 2019 upheld a ruling in which the TSC was ordered to process pensions for more than 50,000 teachers who retired between July 1, 1997 and June 30, 2003 based on salaries awarded in the 1997 agreement.

The TSC had unsuccessfully sought to overturn an October 23, 2008 decision by Justice David Maraga, claiming that the retired teachers had inflated the amount payable, contrary to the court’s direction of 2008. TSC argued that the amount should have been Sh16.7 billion and not Sh43.2 billion but lost in its application to have the ruling set aside and the matter heard by a three-judge bench.

The government at the beginning of this year rolled out a new pension scheme for all public servants, including teachers and that which requires employees to contribute 7.5 per cent of their pay.

The scheme, known as the Public Service Superannuation Scheme (PSSS), will see a monthly collection of an excess of Sh3 billion.

The plan, which came into force on January 1, is mandatory for all teachers under TSC, workers under the Public Service Commission, National Police Service Commission, and any other public service employees under the age of 45.

At the same time TSC has asked its senior management officials in the regions to send details of all teachers who have achieved global, national and local recognition to be featured in the Teachers Image, a quarterly publication by the commission.

“The aspects may include exemplary performance in national examinations, sports, theatre, institutional management, innovation, community service or advocacy,” says a circular to all regional and county directors.

TSC receives a public apology from the Standard Newspaper over the incorrect Interns’ news feature

The Standard Newspaper has apologized to the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, over an erroneous feature that it published about teacher interns; last week. The story caused frenzy amongst the teaching circles as it reported that the interns (who were employed late lats year) had been offered permanent and Pensionable terms.

“In our Friday’s issue of The Standard, we carried a story indicating that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has employed 8,141 tutors on permanent and pensionable terms. We have since established that this is the number of intern teachers hired.
The Commission has, however, recruited 8,920 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms,” reads a presser by the Standard.

“TSC targeted to hire 10,300 interns and 9,069 teachers. Consequently, the commission is still processing 2,159 interns who will soon be put on payroll. Also being processed are 149 teachers to be hired on permanent and pensionable terms. We apologise to the commission for the error,” the Standard added.

TSC kicked off the internship programme in 2019 with about 10,000 teachers enrolled on the program. An intern teacher in secondary school earns Sh15,000 per month while their primary schools’ counterparts pocket Sh10,000 per month.

The Commission on Friday dismissed the report by the Standard terming it unfortunate. “It has come to my attention that the hardcopy edition of today’s Standard newspapers has reported that TSC had hired 8141 intern teachers on permanent basis. I wish to state here that this information is incorrect and it’s unfortunate. The same is being addressed,” said TSC’s Head of Communications, Beatrice Wababu.
