BREAKING NEWS: KNEC EXAMINERS’ BIG WIN AS KNEC FINALLY INCREASES THE PAYMENT RATES PER SCRIPT FOR ALL 2019 KCSE EXAMINERS

KUPPET HAD THREATENED TO PARALYZE THIS YEAR’S MARKING EXERCISE IF KNEC STANDS ITS GROUND: HERE ARE THE LATEST DETAILS ON CURRENT KNEC KCSE PAYMENT RATES PER SCRIPT AND THE NEW PROPOSED PAYMENT RATES PER SCRIPT FOR KNEC CONTRACTED EXAMINERS

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC has finally agreed to increase KCSE payment rates for all 2019 KCSE Examiners.

The council finally bowed to pressure from both teachers and the teachers’ union, KUPPET.

Teachers who had been contracted to mark this year’s Business Paper-II national exams downed their tools on Monday citing poor payment rates from the council.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers also joined the aggrieved examiners who had vowed not to touch any paper in demanding for better pay.

KNEC’S NEW PAYMENT RATES PER SCRIPT:

KNEC has today released new payment rates for all the subjects, including Business Paper-II.

HERE IS THE BREAK-DOWN OF KNEC’S NEW PAYMENT RATES PER SCRIPT FOR TEACHERS MARKING THE 2019 KCSE EXAMS

BUSINESS PAPER II NEW KNEC PAYMENT RATES PER SCRIPT

Although the angry examiners were demanding to have the payment rate increased from Kshs 46 to 68 per script, KNEC agreed to pay them Kshs 56 per script.

BIOLOGY PAPER III NEW KNEC PAYMENT RATES PER SCRIPT

Examiners marking this year’s Biology Paper III will pocket Kshs 50 per script.

COMPUTER PAPER ONE NEW KNEC PAYMENT RATES PER SCRIPT

Teachers marking Computer Paper I will receive Kshs 54 per script.

KUPPET’S PROPOSED KNEC PAYMENT RATES PER SCRIPT

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET had on Tuesday given KNEC a 7-days-ultimatum to increase the payment rates of all KNEC examiners to a flat rate of Kshs 100 per scrip.

This means that all examiners will receive the same amount irrespective of the subjects being marked if KNEC gives in to KUPPET’S DEMAND.

KUPPET further argued that KNEC examiners were receiving meagre earnings despite the indispensable role they play in the process of assessment.

KNEC’S POOR WORKING CONDITIONS

KNEC

KUPPET through its Secretary-General Akelo Misori said that the payment given to KNEC examiners does not commensurate the poor working conditions Kenyan teachers are subjected to in those KNEC designated marking centres.

LONG WORKING HOURS AND CONGESTION

Some of the challenges that KNEC examiners are currently experiencing include long working hours and congestion.

In Alliance Girls, for instance, there are 1, 800 examiners marking this year’s English Paper III 101/3.

This means that the school’s resources have been stretched to host this year’s KNEC examiners.

Besides, the KNEC contracted professionals are expected to wake up as early as 4.00 A.M. and work up to 10.00 P.M.

The examiners are also expected to carry the boxes containing the students’ scripts to and fro one point to another.

The marking of the 2019 KCSE exams has been temporarily halted at Machakos Girls High School after examiners decided to down their tools following grievances that have not been addressed.

The examiners who were charged with the responsibility of marking this year’s Business Paper-II exam downed their tools due to poor payment rates by KNEC.

This means that the marking of Business paper II is yet to kick off since the examiners have hardly touched a candidates paper.

REPORTING DATES

The examiners reported to the designated KNEC marking centre over the weekend in readiness for this year’s marking exercise.

Attempts by KNEC CEO Dr Mercy Karogo to calm their nerves were met by jeering and a spirited resistance from the angry teachers.

She was extremely humiliated by the angry examiners who booed her off the stage as she tried to address them today.

According to inner sources, KNEC Boss Dr Mercy Karogoheld a crisis meeting on Monday evening with senior examiners in an attempt to avert the crisis.

KNUT’S GRAND PLAN FOR TSC TEACHERS

There is always some light at the end of every tunnel no matter how long the passage may seem.

For a very long time now Kenyan teachers have been forced to yield to pressure emanating from their employer the Teachers Service Commission during pay rise tussles between the union and the commission.

However, details have emerged about how the ingenious Kenya National Union of Teachers is planning to make the lives of Kenyan teachers better!

The details were revealed ahead of the World Teachers’ Day held on Saturday through a confidential document prepared by KNUT’s technical team.

The document partly reveals KNUT’s plans to push for higher pay and more allowances to shield Kenyan teachers from the intolerable economic conditions.

Encouraged by the near successful implementation of the CBA, the union now seeks to triple teachers’ salaries.

This is among the proposals that will be presented to the TSC for further deliberation.

NEW SALARIES AND ALLOWANCES FOR TEACHERS
KNUT proposes to have the monthly basic salary of the lowest-paid teacher that is Grade B5 to be raised to a maximum of sh 87, 024 from the current Sh 21,756 and that of the highest-paid teacher that is Grade D5 to increase from the current Sh 131, 380 to a maximum of sh 394, 140.

In an internal document issued by the KNUT’s National Executive Council, new allowances and more house allowance have been proposed.

KNUT’S INTERNAL WARS
Internal sources have hinted that the ongoing leadership tussles may delay the grand plans that the union has for teachers.

The current plan is part of the next phase of the implementation of the CBA between the year 2021-2023.

The KNUT secretary-general Mr Wilson Sossion on Friday confirmed that the proposals had already been approved by the National Advisory Council of the union and the national steering committee.

He further added that they are ready to submit the document any time.

KUPPET’S 30-70 % PAY RISE
KNUT’S rival union KUPPET, on the other hand, has already scheduled a meeting with the TSC and tabled its proposed 30-70 % salary increment.

KUPPET further wants house allowances to be harmonized across all the regions.

This new development is welcome given that there are more than 315 000 teachers who are currently under the TSC payroll.

The new proposal will also put a glimmer of hope in young teachers and education graduates for they are likely to view the teaching profession from a different perspective.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY
The TSC on Saturday joined student teachers at Kenyatta University in a walk to mark the World Teachers’ Day.

The commission also took time to sensitize teacher trainees on what is expected of them once they join the profession.

KNUT secretary general, Sossion also said that young teachers need to be integrated into the teaching profession to sharpen their teaching skills early enough.

This is because if TSC absorbs young teachers, it will be assured of quality staff and quality education.

KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori, on the other hand, requested the government to set aside adequate money to recruit and employ more teachers.

Education News:Shocking Details Emerge as Lugulu Girls High School Students Reveal what is “Consuming” Them

Shocking Details Emerge as Lugulu Girls High School Students Reveal what is “Consuming” Them

Rape at Lugulu Girls High School
Rape at Lugulu Girls High School

Unrest  was noticed in along the Webuye-Kitale highway after a rowdy mob of students spotting the official Lugulu Girls high school’s official uniform left the school and barricaded the road to protest against what they termed as gross misdemeanor of their principal.

The girls who marched all the way to Webuye Police Station to tender their complaints about what their school principal did, were not afraid to speak out their unending woes within a school environment where they expect their interests to be safeguarded.

Rape at Lugulu Girls High School

According to a reliable source, they managed to get the attention of the OCS.

Initial reports indicate that a rape incident happened at the school and some girls witnessed the disgusting act.

However, upon reporting the issue, they were asked to keep mum and “see no evil” since the principal is said to be eyeing a coveted prize.

Reputation First?

The students further accused the principal of egocentrism for their silence was meant to protect the principal’s “good reputation.”

The principal is also accused of threatening to send the witnesses to prison.

The girl who was raped was also reprimanded by the principal and falsely accused of spinning a web of lies  to match her story despite the other girls witnessing the ordeal.

POYA Award

The students also reported that their principal needed a certificate of good conduct for her to be get the coveted principal of the year award.

The frustrated students also added that the principal told them that her name was not going to be soiled by that incident since it is protected by the blood of Jesus.

This report is worrying since the principal of a school is supposed to be at the frontline protecting her students but in this case the exact opposite happened.

The police have launched an independent  investigation into the matter.

Such incidences should be condemned and our girls protected against sex predators for their futures to be secure.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHILDREN LOVE READING ESPECIALLY DURING THIS CORONA  LOCK DOWN PERIOD.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHILDREN LOVE READING ESPECIALLY DURING THIS CORONA  LOCKDOWN PERIOD.

Many a time you have heard parents and teachers lamenting on the lazy nature of the current crop of school children. The reading culture in this country has gone fully to the dogs- thanks to the advancement of technology that has brought with it the much-hyped social media! It is not surprising therefore that one is likely to come across so many high school graduates that have never perused through any other book save for the teacher guided set books. This is so disheartening to both the parents but more specifically to the teachers of English. You are very much aware that any second language acquisition is all dependent on the levels of one’s interaction with the language. Interaction in our case involves the speaking and even reading literature scripted in the language of interest. Children who are exposed to reading early enough have an easy time acquiring the much-known four skills of English: Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening. It is important therefore that parents are made aware of this fact if they have to help their children acquire this important skill.

Avail reading materials (books)

I want to believe that every parent should prioritize providing reading materials to his children. It should be noted that it is not about just providing books but providing relevant and interesting texts to read. It is good to consider the interests of your children when purchasing these books to avoid buying what your kids may consider boring. You can involve them when sourcing these books from the bookshelves. Encourage them to pick books with what they consider as interesting titles of course with your guidance.

Create some reading area/room

This is a must if any reading has to take place at home. I am cognizant of the fact that some home spaces may not allow this but remember that even their bedrooms can be arranged to accommodate a reading space. This reading space must be conducive to stimulate reading and concentration. Ensure that the room is airy with appropriate furniture to facilitate reading.

Draw a time table

It is advisable that parents and guardians together with their children draw a reading timetable so that the kids are all aware of what time they are supposed to read. This will make it easy for parents because all they will be doing is ensure that the reading sessions take place. This time tables should be strictly followed.

Consider the mental age of your children.

The mental age of children is different from the chronological age. The chronological age of a child is the actual age of the child while the mental age is the intellectual capacity of a child. This will come to play when selecting books for the children. Kids with high mental age may need slightly complex content not in tandem with their chronological age to avoid boring them from what may be considered as very simple content.

Provide a serene environment

Always ensure that the environment at home is conducive enough to stimulate reading. All gadgets that may offer distractions should be put away from the reading area. These are gadgets like phones, radios, and even TVs. Human traffic too must be minimized.

Be a role model.

There is no way kids are going to fancy reading if you as a parent never ‘touches’  a book. Read. Let them know that you are asking them to do what they normally see you practice! Remember that children imitate best what they see from adults around them. If they see you with the phone all the time, then that is what exactly they will want to do!
