The Board observed the following:

2019 KCSE Performance

A total of 688,928 students qualified for placement to tertiary institutions at various levels under Government sponsorship. Of these, 125,449 attained a mean grade of C+ and above, thus qualifying to join local universities. Another 563,479 scored between C and E and therefore qualified for placement to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Capacities

Universities have declared a capacity of 193,878, which is enough to absorb all those who met the minimum requirement for admission to Degree programmes and are willing to pursue courses in Universities.

In addition, the State Department of Vocational and Technical Training has provided a capacity of 350,000 in the TVET institutions that are under the Ministry of Education. The capacity is enough to absorb 62% of the candidates who qualified for TVET. The Board noted that there are several other TVET institutions offering training opportunities where the remaining 38 % can be absorbed.

 Resolution
The Placement Board resolved that all the 2019 KCSE candidates who scored a mean grade of C+ and above will be given an opportunity for placement to universities and TVET institutions, while all those who scored C and below will be given an opportunity to apply for placement to TVET institutions.

How did you arrive at the low pay figures for Intern Teachers?- Group of Lawyers ask TSC

A group of Lawyers has written to the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, to seek answers on the terms of engagement for the Intern teachers. The Lawyers from Mugeria, Lempaa & Kariuki Advocates want the Commission to explain how it arrived at the Sh10,000 and Sh15,000 that it intends to pay the Primary and Secondary Schools Inters; respectively.

“This letter is in relation to the contracts employing teachers in the Republic of Kenya. Specifically, we are aware that you are paying primary school teachers Kshs. 10,000 and high school teachers Kshs. 15,000,” the Lawyers wrote in a letters dated December 2, 2019 and addressed to the TSC boss Dr Nancy Macharia.

“Specifically, we would like your commission to provide to us the following information: The rationale that was used to arrive at Kshs. 10,000 and Kshs. 15,000 for primary and high school teachers respectively as remuneration,” the Lawyers added.

Also read:

The teachers’ employer is currently recruiting a total of 10,300 intern teachers who are expected to report to schools in January, 2020. The exercise was marred by low turnouts in some recruiting centres as interns stayed away citing low pay and ‘unfair’ contractual terms from TSC.

According to TSC, the intern teachers are to be employed for a contract period of one year. The Commission is not clear on whether it will then employ them on Permanent and Pensionable terms as it happened to the contracted interns in 2010.

But now, the Lawyers wants the Commission to explain Whether in arriving at the above stated amounts it consulted the Salaries and Remuneration Commission. The Lawyers wonder ‘why teachers who are as qualified as permanently employed teachers are subjected to such low salaries,’ adding that they may take legal redress on behalf of the interns.

KATHEKA BOYS’ SECONDARY SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS KATHEKA Boys Sec. School was started back in 1974 as Harambee Sec. School to assist the local children who could not get places to Provincial and National Schools or Access education. The school is sponsored by the Catholic Church. The school is situated in Eastern province, Kitui County (Kitui West District), Mutonguni division, Kauwi Zone.

In 1994, all the girls were phased out and it became purely Boys school. A second stream was started in 1996 and the enrollment continued to increase posing challenges to all existing facilities. In 2008, a third stream was started. Today the school is a fully pledged provincial school with a population of 480 students, 14 teachers and 17 support staff.

The school has 5 dormitories, 11 classrooms, 2 labs, a computer room, a library, 4 staff houses, 1 kitchen, and a multipurpose hall among other facilities. The school is registered by the Ministry of education via certificate no. GP/A/6022/09.

New Knec guidelines, requirements and procedure for equation of foreign certificates

Did you undertake your studies outside Kenya and would like to be employed or further your studies locally? Well. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released new guidelines on equation of foreign certificates.

GUIDELINES ON EQUATION OF FOREIGN CERTIFICATES (REVISED EDITION V).

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) equates school and post school certificates. The conditions for equation are as outlined below:-

Such certificates should have been awarded by an accredited examining board or an institution mandated by law to offer the examination and issue certificates.

Institutional based certificates/courses (local or International) similar to those offered by KNEC are not equitable.

Requirements for equation of foreign certificates by Knec.

For any equation to be undertaken by KNEC, the applicant must have met the entry requirements of the equivalent course(s) offered by KNEC at the time e.g. if someone has taken an equivalent of a P1 course outside the country and seeks equation, they must have attained the Kenyan equivalent entry qualification C (Plain);

Clients seeking equation of Advanced level certificates must provide a copy of the “O” level certificate and the two certificates must be submitted to the Council when seeking equation. The two certificates MUST be authenticated and a confirmation sent to KNEC directly by the awarding institution.

Clients who sat for the KCSE examination and are applying for equation of Advanced Level certificates must have had KCSE mean grade of C (plain).

Clients seeking equation of Advanced Level certificate MUST have achieved a minimum of Division II (two) in Ordinary Level.

The applicant must have covered the subjects that are mandatory for one to satisfy the awarding rules eg for a certificate to be equated to KCSE, the applicant must have sat for 7 (seven) subjects including Mathematics, a language i.e. English, two Sciences and one Humanity.

The applicant must have been under formal instruction for the appropriate number of years/contact hours of study at that particular level as per the KNEC requirements.

All foreign examinations/courses taken locally or internationally but not done in the country of origin of the said examination/course are not equitable to KNEC qualifications.

All courses undertaken through correspondence/distance learning have no equivalence to any KNEC qualification because contact hours by a learner are a requirement by KNEC.

All persons holding foreign qualifications and seeking to join any educational institution (School and Post school) offering KNEC examinations must get an equation/equivalence from KNEC before joining the said institution.

Any person seeking an equation/equivalence and holding a certificate written in any other language than English or Kiswahili must have the certificate translated by the Embassy of their respective country or Alliance Franchise for certificates written in French or any other recognized institution for other languages.

All certificates submitted for equation/equivalence must be verified or confirmed by the Examinations Body that issued the certificate. The confirmation/verification of results should be sent by the Examination Body directly to the Chief Executive Officer, KNEC emailing to ceo@knec.ac.ke.

Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. It is the same body that selects and places students to higher learning institutions; Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics. To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. Top on the list is the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, that advances both loans and Bursaries. [wpedon id=”734″]   Universities run online platforms; portals and websites, where such services as admission application, online accommodation booking, E-learning, exams results downloads and many are provided to students, staff and the general public.
