Kisumu Girls High School || SCHOOL’S HISTORY

Kisumu Girls High School was founded in 1962 as an offshoot of Kisumu Boys’ High School and initially operated as a mixed-gender institution before transitioning to become a girls-only school.

It was officially opened in 1963, the same year Kenya attained independence. Following independence, Kisumu Girls High School transitioned from Asian to African leadership as per the changes in governance across public institutions in Kenya during that period.

The school was started in 1962 as an off shoot of Kisumu Boys High School. The school was a 3- streamed school till 1977 when two harambee streams were started . They were then taken over by the Ministry of Education. Due to its continuous good performance, the school was elevated to national school status in 2012. It then became a 6- streamed school in 2014. The first ever principal of the school was Miss. T. Cheryan

The school has established a fire assembly in the school so as to enhance disaster preparedness among the students and the school staff.

Five girls from the school were recently shortlisted for the International Sakharov Prize in 2019. This came in after the girls were behind the I-cut app that helps fight Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The app is meant to restore hope to girls affected by FGM.
