The latest notice issued by the Kenya Revenue Authority, KRA on Monday, August 3 on the processing status of tax waiver applications shows that the taxman has now launched a newly enhanced system for process the applications to clear the backlog in time.

Kenyans who failed to file their taxes on time can apply for waivers of penalties and interest accrued but they must meet the conditions outlined by KRA.

The Kenya Revenue Authority also wishes to notify those with pending applications to stay tuned since they will soon be contacted using the information available at the iTax portal either via SMS or email to provide supporting evidence for their waiver applications.

NOTE: Once contacted, the applicant must provide supporting evidence for their waiver applications within 30 days.

 

 

The Kenya Revenue Authority, KRA has issued a public notice indicating the processing status of tax waiver applications.

According to the formal notice, KRA has now launched a newly enhanced system that will see tax waiver applications processed very fast to clear the backlog.

Tax Procedures Act, 2015 Section 89(7) allows Kenyans who meet the listed conditions to apply for waivers of penalties and interest accrued for failing to file their tax returns online in time.

KRA also notified those who already applied for tax waivers that each of them will be contacted soon using the information provided on their iTax profiles so that they can attach supporting evidence for their applications.

Consequently, the applicants should verify the contact information including phone number and email address to ensure they are up to date to avoid any inconveniences.

DEADLINE

Upon receiving formal communication from the KRA, applicants will be expected to provide evidence ‘within the next thirty days for their waiver applications.

Failure to do so within the stipulated time will lead to automatic rejection of the waiver application.

“Kindly note that all waiver applications that will not have supporting evidence presented before the specified deadline shall be rejected and the penalty and interest thereof demanded payment,” read the notice in part.

Members of the public can reach out to the KRA for any further queries over the process.

KRA’s response is most welcome especially at this time following the numerous complaints by several Kenyans who had applied for tax waivers indicating that they had not received any response.

HOW TO APPLY FOR KRA TAX WAIVERS VIA THE Itax PORTAL

  1. Access the official KRA Portal
  2. Log in using your KRA PIN and password
  3. Click on the menu labeled Debts and Enforcement
  4. Select Apply for Waiver for Penalties and Interests
  5. Choose the application type to access the KRA waiver application form
  6. There is no 100% guarantee that your penalty will be wived. However, include reasons such as job loss and sickness and try your luck.
