Maasai Mara University Courses, Students Portal log in, Website, Requirements, Fees and Application

Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. It is the same body that selects and places students to higher learning institutions; Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics. To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. An academic year at the university takes two semesters of three months each. University students get fees loans from various organizations. Top on the list is the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, that advances both loans and Bursaries. [wpedon id=”734″ align=”center”] Universities run online platforms; portals and websites, where such services as admission application, online accommodation booking, E-learning, exams results downloads and many are provided to students, staff and the general public. On admissions, most universities have admissions in May and September for new students.

Low turnout mars TSC Internship teacher interviews as Many applicants stay away over grievances; List of schools missing applicants

Empty halls characterized the ongoing TSC internship teacher interview sessions in some parts of the country; as the would be applicants stayed away. Panelists who had thronged the interview venues by 8.00am were caught by surprise when no shortlisted applicant showed up.

“We have been forced to suspend the exercise as no one has turned up,” said one panelist at an interview venue in the western region. In this particular venue, there were no interviewees despite the the fact that the respective schools had sent notifications to shortlisted candidates. “I had sent notifications to all the 5 shortlisted candidates. They promised to come for the interview (today). Unfortunately attempts to reach them have been futile as their phones are either off or calls go unanswered,” said one Principal who sought for anonymity.

According to this Principal, the panelists had waited till 12.00pm and when there were no signs of any applicant showing up, they decided to adjourn the exercise. “The officer in charge from TSC has instructed that we reach out to a qualified applicant so as to sign the contract form by next week,” he added.

Reasons for skipping the interviews

Most of the applicants who vowed skip the internships sighted a myriad of reasons; for their refusal to take up the slots. “The pay is too little. How can TSC pay a graduate a paltry Sh15,000 only!” wondered one applicant who was shortlisted but failed to go for interviews.

“To make matters worse, the pay is subjected to statutory and other deductions. Also, there are no allowances for teacher interns as those paid to other TSC teachers. This is being inhuman. The Commission is taking graduate teachers for a ride. I shall not take up the offer,” she added. According to the applicants who skipped the interviews, these were the reasons for their actions:

  1. Low pay and lack of any allowances,
  2. The interview sessions are expensive in terms of huge fares to far flung areas with no surety of clinching the employment chance,
  3. Risk of missing permanent employment if the vacancies are advertised within the internship contract period,
  4. Many requirements like the risk cover, Certificate of Good Conduct and others,
  5. Discriminatory working conditions as interns will be subjected to thorough supervision from their permanent counterparts,
  6. No guarantee of permanent employment after the one year internship contract,
  7. Better pay under BOM (Board of Management) terms.

How did you arrive at the low pay figures for Intern Teachers?- Group of Lawyers ask TSC

A group of Lawyers has written to the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, to seek answers on the terms of engagement for the Intern teachers. The Lawyers from Mugeria, Lempaa & Kariuki Advocates want the Commission to explain how it arrived at the Sh10,000 and Sh15,000 that it intends to pay the Primary and Secondary Schools Inters; respectively.

“This letter is in relation to the contracts employing teachers in the Republic of Kenya. Specifically, we are aware that you are paying primary school teachers Kshs. 10,000 and high school teachers Kshs. 15,000,” the Lawyers wrote in a letters dated December 2, 2019 and addressed to the TSC boss Dr Nancy Macharia.

“Specifically, we would like your commission to provide to us the following information: The rationale that was used to arrive at Kshs. 10,000 and Kshs. 15,000 for primary and high school teachers respectively as remuneration,” the Lawyers added.

The teachers’ employer is currently recruiting a total of 10,300 intern teachers who are expected to report to schools in January, 2020. The exercise was marred by low turnouts in some recruiting centres as interns stayed away citing low pay and ‘unfair’ contractual terms from TSC.

According to TSC, the intern teachers are to be employed for a contract period of one year. The Commission is not clear on whether it will then employ them on Permanent and Pensionable terms as it happened to the contracted interns in 2010.

But now, the Lawyers wants the Commission to explain Whether in arriving at the above stated amounts it consulted the Salaries and Remuneration Commission. The Lawyers wonder ‘why teachers who are as qualified as permanently employed teachers are subjected to such low salaries,’ adding that they may take legal redress on behalf of the interns.
