Anxiety is piling up in the teaching sector following the conclusion of the final phase of the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA.
The birth of Collective Bargaining Agreements ushered in an era of tranquility and stability in the education sector with the endless teacher strikes that used to paralyze learning in Kenyan public schools being discarded.
All eyes are currently set on the teachers’ employer, Teachers Service Commission, to determine whether the idea of embracing an amicable solution to the contentious issue of TSC teachers salaries will be honoured come July 2021.
New TSC salary scales for teachers starting July 1, 2021 in the new CBA 2021-2025
Like in the previous CBA, the Commission will effect new salaries, pay rise for teachers based on their various ranked dubbed TSC salary scales established in collaboration with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, SRC depending on the responsibillities of teachers at a given grade, job group. This saw teachers in higher grades/ cadres- senior teachers, deputies abd heads reaping big in the previous CBA bagging huge salary perks every month.
This did not however settle well with the majority of the teachers who fall in lower grades for they felt alienated, being forced to bag peanuts abd simsim in four phases, resulting in huge salary disparities between classroom teachers and school administrators.

Hope for teachers in lower salary scales, classroom teachers, as TSC promises better salary perks come July 2021

Latest update on the 2021-2025 TSC Teachers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA
The teachers demanded for an enhanced package in the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement but their employer has been too slow on finalizing the process of getting the new CBA.
The TSC has so far submitted proposals of 16-30 percent increment on basic salary to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission but the giant teachers unions claim they are oblivious of the deal being sealed in the ongoing negotiations.
The commission recently confirmed that the SRC had not completed the job evaluation process for all the government employees after KNUT lodged complaints insunuating delayed response on the new CBA and threatened to unleash “hell.”
The teachers are now looking forward to enjoying a better pay by July once the new CBA goes through.
On a positive note ,the teachers employer has indicated that it is expediting the process to ensure that the teachers earn a better package come July 1 ,2021 when the new CBA will be implemented.
This is good news to teachers who have been worried by the slow progress by Tsc.
