Schools, TVETS, colleges, and universities in Kenya are likely to remain shut beyond the tentative reopening date, which was set on June 4 2020, by Education CS George Magoha if the covid19 education team’s report is adopted.

The CS had set the date for schools’ reopening in Kenya on June 4 on grounds that the Committee and Ministry of Health gave a nod.

Reopening of schools on June 4 may however seem unlikely especially now that the number of coronavirus positive cases keeps on soaring with each day that passes.

This week saw the nation record the highest cases of covid 19 with yesterday’s cases being over 140.

The final decision on when to reopen schools however rests with the President and Education CS Magoha. The committee has played its part, collecting, analyzing, and presenting” views on how best schools can be reopened.

CS Magoha is expected to table the report before President Uhuru Kenyatta soon.

NEW SCHOOL TERM DATES KCPE & KCSE TIMETABLE, AND ACADEMIC CALENDAR

Dr. Ruto’s Committee has also suggested that school term dates and academic calendar be altered. According to the Committee, the academic calendar should commence in September.

KCPE & KCSE exam timetables should also be changed to give candidates ample time to prepare adequately for the tests.

The committee suggests that the two national exams be conducted in February 2021.

ENOUGH FUNDING

The team has also recommended that schools and tertiary learning institutions be given enough funds to facilitate smooth running.

The committee discovered that the majority of schools were yet to receive their state funding by the time all learning institutions were shut down in Mid-March. This explains why many schools cannot pay BOM teachers’ salaries and the subordinate staff.

The task force says that the money should be released in full in September 2020.

SCHOOLS’ REOPENING SAFETY RULES

The committee has also come up with schools’ reopening safety rules pegged on the recommendations given by the World Health Organization, WHO.

The team advises the MoE to enhance social distancing and standard hygiene measures in all schools.
