UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI, UON RANKED AMONG THE BEST UNIVERSITIES IN THE WORLD, AS MAKERERE TAKES LEAD IN THE EAST AFRICAN REGION; TOP 10 UNIVERSITIES IN EAST AFRICA 2020/2021; CENTER FOR WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS’ NEW LIST 2020-21
The Center for World University Rankings, CWUR has provided a new list of the best universities in the world.
According to the 2020-2021 list the University Of Nairobi was ranked in the top 6.8% out of twenty thousand universities worldwide.
UON clinched position 1, 294 out of 24, 000 universities worldwide.
Uganda’s Makerere on the other hand took position 923 in the world with a score of 70.8%.
Tanzania’s Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, MUHAS also made it to the 2020/2021 CWUR ranking after clinching position 1, 835 with a score of 66.4%.
Interestingly, all the three top universities in East Africa 2020/2021 are government-sponsored hence public.
CWUR Rankings is popular for publishing the largest academic rankings of global universities. Its ranking is highly objective, transparent, and consistent.
TOP 10 BEST UNIVERSITIES IN EAST AFRICA
Only three universities appeared in the list of best universities in the world from East Africa in 2020/2021. These are;
- Makerere University (Uganda) 70.8%
- The University of Nairobi, UON (Kenya) 68.4%
- The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, MUHAS (Tanzania) 66.4%
Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan did not produce any university in the world ranking list 2020/2021.
The same case applies to all the four countries from the Horn of Africa; Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Eritrea.
THE REST OF AFRICA
In Africa, South Africa took position one with three of its universities clinching impressive positions and marks in the 2020/2021 world ranking list.
The University of Cape Town took position one in Africa (position 268 in the world) with a score of 77.3%.
In position two was the University of Witwatersrand (position 275 in the world) with a score of 77.2%.
It was followed by Stellenbosch University which took position 429 in the world with a score of 75.0%.
Harvard University, USA took the most coveted position after being ranked the best in the whole world with a score of 100%.
CENTER FOR WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS SELECTION CRITERIA; INDICATORS; RANKING METHODOLOGY
CWUR uses four well-known selection criteria to rank the universities;
- Quality of education; number of alumni who have won major academic distinctions relative to the size of the university (25%)
- Alumni employment; number of alumni who have held executive positions in the world’s biggest companies relative to the size of the university (25%)
- Quality of faculty; number of faculty members who have won major academic distinctions
- Research performance
UON therefore remains the best choice for students wishing to undertake their studies in Kenya. This explains why the university filled to capacity most of the times.
