The Teachers Service Commission has set clear guidelines and minimum requirements for teachers who would like to be promoted to serve as either deputies or principals in various schools in Kenya.
These deployment conditions are contained in the 2018 Career Progression Guidelines, CPGs for teachers and the Policy on Appointment and Deployment of Institutional Administrators of 2017.
To be appointed as a principal of a secondary school in Kenya, one must meet the following conditions:
- LATEST TSC REQUIREMENTS FOR PRINCIPALS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS
There are various categories of secondary school principals. Therefore, the minimum conditions for appointment vary based on the various categories enlisted by the Teachers Service Commission, TSC.
- LATEST TSC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR PRINCIPALS OF SUB COUNTY SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND ALL DAY SCHOOLS
For one to be appointed as a head of a sub-county secondary school or a day school, s/he must serve as a deputy principal, Grade D2 for at least three years.
Principals of Sub County and day schools are ranked in Grade 3 (T- Scale 13).
- LATEST TSC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR PRINCIPALS OF COUNTY SECONDARY SCHOOLS WITH OVER 540 STUDENTS
County schools with over 540 students are headed by Senior Principals in Grade D4 (T-Scale 14).
To be appointed as a Senior Principal of a County School with at least 540 students, one must serve as a Principal in Grade 3 for at least three years.
- LATEST TSC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR PRINCIPALS OF NATIONAL AND EXTRA COUNTY SECONDARY SCHOOLS WITH OVER 1 000 STUDENTS
National and extra county secondary schools with over 1 000 students are headed by Chief Principals in Grade D5 (T-Scale 15).
To be appointed as a Chief Principal, one must serve as a Senior Principal (Grade D4) for at least three years.
