TSC News Today: Commission speaks up on Junior and Senior Secondary School Teachers For the new CBC

With the first new CBC class approaching secondary school, the Teachers Service Commission is working on ways to categorize teachers in to junior and senior secondary schools. The commission wants teachers in primary schools with C+ and above and those with Diploma and Degree to teach junior secondary. Senior secondary teachers in CBC will be the current secondary school teachers.

1,000 P1 teachers who hold higher qualifications will be deployed yearly by the commission. This is to meet the staffing needed in implementation of the new curriculum. In a report titled, Status Report on Teacher Preparedness for Competency Based Curriculum Implementation, presented before the Parliamentary Committee on Education, TSC said that it will deploy the P1 teachers who hold diplomas, higher diplomas, undergraduate degrees, post-graduate diplomas, masters and PHDs to serve at Junior secondary levels at various institutions across the country.

The report, which was read by TSC Chief Executive, Nancy Macharia, noted that by the end of October 2018, a total of 18,076 employed as P1 teachers had acquired degrees and 17,758 higher diplomas.
It also shows that 486 have attained master’s degrees, 11 postgraduate diplomas and 5 have diplomas with the same number being PHD holders. In the new curriculum, Junior and senior secondary schools will both take 3 years each for completion.

The new curriculum, which was fully implemented in January this year, mainly aims at equipping learners with life skills and encouraging learners to use their competencies in solving some of the problems aside from classroom work.

Junior high school is the next stage for CBC students after completing upper primary. Here, learners are to be exposed to a broad based curriculum which will enable them explore their own abilities, personality and potential, as well as choose subjects that will channel them in to a career that interests and fits them best.

They will also undergo a severe career guidance program and will be exposed to the related subjects to enable them make informed choices as they enter senior secondary school, where subjects will be classified as either core or potential.

Pre-service teachers will continue training on the new education system this year. According to the report, 16,711 teachers with P1 certificates have acquired diplomas and degrees, which were submitted to the commission between January 8th 2014 and July 2017.

According to the ministry, the budget for the curriculum reforms from the year 2019/2020 from PP1 up to grade 4 will be approximately Ksh.500 billion for the first four years.
