DPTE and TSC Internship Recruitment Guidelines Changes as TSC is forced to lower entry grade requirements following the scrapping of D+ Grade in Mathematics for Diploma and Degree in Education Courses

Charged with the key duties of recruiting, employing and posting both primary and secondary school teachers, the Teachers Service Commission will now be obliged to lower entry grades for students wishing to pursue the new Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE and Bachelor of Education degree courses henceforth.
This means that the Commission will further review recruitment guidelines for intern teachers upon successful completion of the aforementioned courses.
This key change was conceived bearing in mind the impending full roll out of the new Competence-Based Curriculum, CBC in Kenya.
The stakeholders who initiated this change saw it wise to do away with the D+ mandatory grade in Mathematics for all student teachers that has previously shut the door to many qualified candidates.
According to The Standard newspaper, this decision was arrived at after experts saw it quite ironical to bar applicants who had not attained the D+ grade in Mathematics yet the Kenyan education sector is in the process of ushering in a new CBC-laden era where learners themselves have an option of taking subjects that they can comfortably tackle during exams. So why bar teachers from taking subjects that they feel comfortable in?
This decision reignites the candle for many teachers who have been having the urge to undertake the new Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE since it was first rolled out in the year 2021. The first batch of learners joined college in May with the second cohort joining in August.
Worth noting however is the fact that not all teacher training colleges have received a nod to train student teachers in the new DPTE course.
