The Teachers Service Commission TSC-Kenya recently recruited teachers massively to plug the biting shortage of the teaching workforce in various schools.

TSC Mass recruitment is a nationwide exercise targeting trained teachers with certificate, diploma or degree qualifications.

Although the basic salary is pegged on the teachers’ qualifications, successfully recruited teachers however do not earn the same allowances.

For instance, the TSC Hardship Allowance varies from one job group or grade to another with newly recruited teachers receiving the lowest perks.

Kindly note that not all areas qualify to be gazetted or listed as  Hardship Counties.

TSC Hardship Counties or areas must exhibit the following key features 

Lack of all weather roads

Lack of easily accessible health facilities

Lack of easily accessible schools

Errotic  weather conditions etc

Recently, the Kenyan Government revised the Hardship Areas, scrapping some on grounds that they can no longer be considered to be Hardship Areas now that they have undergone major developments in terms of availability of social amenities and all weather roads.

The table below summarizes the monthly hardship allowance rates that are paid to teachers working in hardship areas; per job group:

TSC designated hardship areas.

TSC has designated various areas as hardship. The areas considered as hardship include those that are prone to terrorism, famine and aridity. As of 2012, TSC had about 38 areas approved as hardship.

Currently, teachers teaching in schools located in some parts of the following counties receive monthly hardship allowances.
