Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Grade B5 (Primary school teacher II -T-scale 5) is the entry grade for teachers in primary schools. Formerly, the grade was referred to as job group G.
This job group has six notches. Both commuter and house allowances are equal in all the six notches. Basic salary varies from one notch to another. Teacher in the first notch earns a basic salary of kshs 21,756 while the teacher in the sixth notch takes home a basic salary of kshs 27,195.

The amount a teacher in the grade B5 receives depends on three factors;

Physical location of the school – A school that is located in an area mapped as municipal zone will get more commuter and house allowance. Similarly school that is located in an area mapped as hardship areas will get hardship allowance. A teacher in grade B5 will get a monthly hardship allowance of kshs 6,600.
Notch. There are six notches. Each notch has different basic salary. The salary increases from the first notch to the highest notch(Sixth).
Physical Disability: This is another factor that contributes to the amount a teacher takes home. In tis job group a teacher who is physically challenged is entitled to a disability guide allowance of ksh 20,000 per month.

(JOB GROUP H) LATEST TSC SALARIES FOR PRIMARY TEACHER I, GRADE C1, FORMERLY JOB GROUP H EFFECTIVE JULY 2020; 2020 TSC TEACHERS’ SALARIES

This is a promotional grade for tutors in primary schools.  Besides other minimum selection criteria, teachers who would like to be upgraded to this Grade must have served as Primary Teacher II T-Scale 5 for at least three years.

These tutors’ current monthly salary stands at Sh 27, 195.

 

ALLOWANCES

It is however important to note that much as these teachers fall in the same grade/ job group, their monthly gross salaries differ depending on the location of their work stations. The same case applies to their TSC allowances. For instance, teachers posted to stations listed as TSC Hardship Areas get an extra Sh 8, 200.

Special Needs Teachers, SNE, also get an extra Sh 8, 200.

Teachers in Grade C1, former Job Group H earn the same amount of commuter allowance that is Kshs 4, 000 per month, irrespective of their workplaces.

The Commission also pays a flat rate of Kshs 4, 000 annually to these teachers as leave allowance in January.
