DID YOU KNOW WHY THE NEW CASES OF HIV INFECTIONS ARE HIGHEST AMONG AFRICAN TEENAGE GIRLS?

Advertisements

Sex education
The importance of sex education among teenagers cannot be overemphasized. As they say, information is power. Our adolescents, teens and youths, in general, need to be taken through proper guided sex education. They must know what sexual relations are and the consequences of such relations. Sex myths must be burst if this generation is going to be saved. The media around these special group of the population is misleading in terms of the content it airs! Explicit images and highly sexualised content in music videos and movies are common. Social media has further exacerbated the situation. It is not a surprise to find short clips of pornography doing rounds on facebook pages and Wasup groups. With all these gross content feeding the minds of the teenagers a lot of mentorship and constant education on what is right is a must! It is not surprising therefore that most of these teens will dangerously explore and experiment with what they interact with daily leading to disastrous effects in their lives.

Rising new HIV infections among teenage girls

It is, therefore, a none brainer that as much as the world has made great strides in fighting and mitigating the effects of the HIV and AIDS scourge in the last couple of decades, there is still cause to worry because according to the director Natalie Kaneme of the United Nations Population Fund, there are rising new infections among teenage girls in Africa. It is not lost to the world that Africa has the most youthful population and this is pausing a threat to the fight against HIV and AIDS. This observation was made in a press conference held in Tokyo international conference on African development in Yokohama-Japan. According to the UNICEF report 2018, it was revealed that the HIV prevalence rate is highest amongst the teenagers. That about 30 teenagers aged between 15 and 19 contract the deadly disease each hour all over the world. Further observation reveals that of these new infections two-thirds are recorded in girls.

Need for reproductive health sensitization

It was further noted that the leading killer of teenage girls is pregnancy-related complications. Many teenage girls who got pregnant tried to seek abortion services from backstreet unqualified practitioners who endanger their lives. Complications arise that more often lead to premature deaths.
Mr Yattani-the cabinet secretary treasury said that the universal health coverage was one of the country’s key pillars, which would facilitate them in eliminating and establishing a legacy of prosperity.

TSC AND KNEC SHOULD STOP TREATING TEACHERS WITH CONTEMPT

Advertisements

RELEASE INVIGILATORS AND SUPERVISORS, THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR NATIONAL EXAMINATION IRREGULARITIES!!!

For years on end, Kenyan teachers have been treated with contempt by their employer, Teachers Service Commission.

What is even more enraging is the fact that the Kenya National Examinations Council has also jumped the bandwagon.

Advertisements

KNEC has forgotten that without the teachers volunteering to invigilate the ongoing KCPE and KCSE examinations, no national exams will go on.

LOW PAYMENT

KNEC needs to be reminded that the teachers work for the Kenyan child, not KNEC.

Advertisements

It is about assessment, Kenyan teachers are well trained to assess candidates with or without KCPE and KCSE national exams.

There is no way KNEC can continue subjecting teachers to torture, anxiety and low payment.

What disgusts me most is the pompous headlines which feature in the mainstream media whenever there is something to do with teachers’ salaries or payment.

Such headlines include “Teachers Reap Big in New Salary Deal” or “Teachers to Get Highly Paid for Overseeing the KCPE and KCSE Exams.”

The media should stop misleading the public.

KNEC’s pay does not commensurate the sacrifice teachers make to ensure that the national exams go on smoothly.

Centre managers, for instance, have to wake up as early as 4.00 A.M. to collect the exams. They still have to man the exams at their various centres and escort them back to the container to ensure that they are safe.

Supervisors, on the other hand, have to do all the paperwork and ensure that everything is in order. Besides, they have to report to their work stations as early as 7.00 A.M. to receive the examination.

Invigilators, on the other hand, have to sit for at least 2 hours in the classroom to ensure that no cheating takes place.

They are not allowed to carry any gadgets within an examination centre.

Phones are confiscated immediately they report to their work stations.

Honestly speaking, this is a great sacrifice on the part of the teachers.

This is why I am advocating for teachers’ rights. Supervising, and invigilating a national exam does not have to put the teacher’s job on the line!

Why does the TSC and KNEC derive pleasure from sacking or suspending teachers whenever an examination malpractice takes place in an examination centre.

IMPERSONATION

Impersonation, for instance, is a malpractice that only the centre manager can be aware of.

The invigilators and supervisors cannot shoulder the blame since they do not interact with the candidates before rehearsal.

Besides, some imposters have registered themselves as private candidates so there is no way you can tell whether they are impersonating candidates since even the passports match them perfectly.

I am thus appealing to KNEC and TSC to reconsider some of the penalties imposed on invigilators and supervisors.

#Teachers are human beings, not robots.

KCSE CHEMISTRY PRACTICALS SET FOR TODAY, THIS IS HOW MOST SCHOOLS PLAN TO CHEAT

Advertisements

KCSE Chemistry practical is set to take place today.

As usual, the teachers in charge of the practical have already received the confidential for the KCSE paper.

The trickiest part of it all is the fact that the Chemistry practical will be marked based on the teacher’s findings which differ from one institution to another due to various variables such as temperature.

Advertisements

Remember there is no way a teacher in North Eastern will have the same findings as that of a teacher in Western Kenya.

Most schools by now have already put up a façade by enclosing the apparatus and reagents using “black” curtains to prevent any early exposure of the examination.

The truth is, invigilators and supervisors today still have to be extra cautious since Chemistry Paper three greatly determines a candidate’s overall score in Chemistry.

Advertisements

Remember keeping your TSC job which you have toiled for all these years depends on the outcomes of Chemistry paper three.

TOO SENSITIVE

One month ago, Professor Magoha forewarned of any identical readings and findings in Practicals.

KNEC has noted that most candidates will end up with similar findings despite conducting the Practical independently.

This is way too weird because the council gives an allowance for students to deviate by a margin of +2 or -2.

However, most teachers who access the confidential early will not uphold integrity.

THIS IS HOW THEY PLAN TO CHEAT IN THE KCSE CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL

The most common way is clever candidates will request the invigilator to call their teacher for them because they do not have “enough” reagent X or because a certain apparatus is dysfunctional.

If an invigilator, who is also a teacher, tries to help, the student will turn down the offer and insist that it is only Teacher Y who can unravel the “mystery.”

Left without option, the invigilator will have to go for Teacher X. then there it is! A golden opportunity for the teacher to confirm whether the student got it right or give the correct reading!

My advice to you is, accompany the teachers in charge throughout the entire session. Do not give room for the devil.

No teacher will let sleeping dogs lie especially given the fact that Chemistry Theory papers are hard nuts to crack.

The other way is “group movements.” The candidates know each other well and the school will arrange them in such a way that the bright students are well distributed in each session.

So when heating element X or rinsing apparatus, they will patiently wait until the bright candidate(s) join them.

That is another opportunity for the weaker candidates to confirm whether their findings are correct or not.

The last way is by arranging the candidates in such a manner that the first shift is composed of the weakest candidates who will be used as “sacrificial lambs.”

This is common in Biology Practicals where the bright ones just need to know the specimen provided and predict the questions.

As the first shift leaves the laboratory, they will be discussing what was set. The bright candidates would have known what to revise for.

In the case of Chemistry, the sacrificial lambs will be used to clear the serious invigilation phase as teachers prepare for a soft landing during the next session.

They know very well that the invigilators and supervisors would have relaxed by the time the next session begins.

My take, invigilate thoroughly for all the sessions since Chemistry Practicals are the most sensitive thus bound to produce Ys in schools…

Their counter-parts who will be marking the KCSE English paper 2 (101/2) have also reported at Alliance Boys High school in readiness for the tough exercise ahead.

PLENARY SESSION

Having reported and registered today, contracted KNEC professionals held a plenary session whereby they were briefed on what is expected of them during this year’s KCSE 2019 marking exercise.

They have also coordinated the marking scheme in preparation for live marking.

CHEATING

As the marking of this year’s KCSE exams kicks off, the fate of 21 KCSE candidates is still unknown following their involvement in exam irregularities.

Speaking at Kenya High school, Professor George Magoha, the Cabinet Secretary for education, confirmed that 21 cases of cheating have already been reported and 90 phones confiscated during the administration of the 2019 KCSE exams.

Besides, 300 schools had been put under constant watch following allegations of plans to cheat.

This year’s orchestrated cheating hot spots include Kisii, Homa Bay, Garissa, Wajir, Migori and Nairobi Counties.

2019 KCSE RELEASE DATES

CS Magoha also said that the 2019 KCSE results will be released long before Christmas, a declaration that has sent jitters in officials who are strongly opposing the idea of “rushing” the marking and the release of national exams.

KNEC’S LATEST TOUGH MARKING RULES FOR KCSE EXAMINERS 2019
The Kenya National Examinations Council has invited over 26, 000 examiners for the 2019 KCSE marking exercise.

The examiners include those who were recently trained and those with long term experience.

The examiners are required to work round the clock to ensure they complete the marking exercise before Christmas.

The examiners should download their leaders from the KNEC CP2 website to confirm their marking centres, payment rates and other logistics.

Unfortunately, in some cases, there have been irregularities and some of us do not comprehend the meaning of the symbols given.

We, therefore, spend most of our time worrying about what to do next.

BELOW ARE IMPORTANT BUT OVERLOOKED FACTS ABOUT KNEC RESULTS

Advertisements
  1. X denotes an absent candidate in the KCSE eXAM. A candidate scores X or is declared absent if s/he fails to sit for one or all the papers given for the exam.
  2. AB symbol, on the other hand, indicates absence in the KCPE exam.
  3. Y indicates that the candidate was involved in a KCSE exam malpractice or irregularity.
  4. OO indicates an irregularity in the KCPE exam.
  5. P indicates that the results have been pended due to inconsistencies such as incorrect KCPE details for entry in the KCSE exam.
  6. W shows that the candidate’s results have been withheld on grounds of suspicion that the candidate may have been involved in an examination irregularity. It shows that an investigation is still being conducted to ascertain the suspicions.
  7. U shows ungraded examination results due to infringement of the awards criteria.

MEAN GRADE INTERPRETATIONS

  1. A mean grade of X shows the candidate was absent in all the subjects.
  2. A mean grade of Y shows that one or more subjects have been cancelled.
  3. A mean grade of U shows the entry requirements for the KCSE exam have not been met.
  4. CRNM mean grade shows that the course requirements for the Teacher Education, technical and business examinations have not been met.

2019 TSC TEACHER- INTERN APPLICANTS TO GO THROUGH INTERVIEWS;LIST OF SHORTLISTED APPLICANTS:

Advertisements

TSC 2019 TEACHER- INTERN APPLICANTS TO GO THROUGH INTERVIEWS AT THE COUNTY LEVEL.

Finally, there is a sigh of relief to all the qualified teachers who applied for the intern positions because TSC has offered direction on the next course of action! All the successful applicants (short-listed) are advised to attend to interviews at the county TSC offices. It is confirmed that a list of shortlisted applicants has been sent to each county. This is from a memo dated 7th of November 2019 from madam Catherine Lenairoshi of TSC Corporate Communications office. The communique further notified all the shortlisted candidates to carry the following as they attend the interviews on a date that would be communicated in due course:

Advertisements
COURTESY.
  • A valid certificate of good conduct
  • A valid personal accident cover
  • An original national ID card.
  • Two passport size photographs
  • KCSE certificate
  • KCPE certificate
  • Disability card where applicable
  • Diploma/degree certificate together with transcripts.
  • The school leaving certificate
  • KRA pin
  • A bank plate

On the 8thof October 2019, the Teachers Service Commission(TSS) advertised for a whooping 10,300 teacher intern positions. These numbers were to take care of both the primary and secondary schools teacher biting shortage. The bigger number(6000) was for secondary schools perhaps in a bid to plug the severe staff shortage following the 100% transition clarion call. The 4,300 posts were reserved for the primary schools. All the applications were to be done online a great departure from the norm where teachers applied for the advertised positions at the school and sub-county education offices.

Salaries and deductions

Advertisements

According to the sources from TSC, it is confirmed that primary school teacher interns will pocket 10,000 while their secondary school counterparts will smile all the way to the bank to cash 15,000. It is important to note that these incomes are subject to statutory deductions. This is stuff like NSSF, NHIF among others.

The Grand promise

Tsc has confirmed that the successful interns will be offered permanent jobs. However, this will depend on the usual conditions: availability of funds and the interns’ performance.

Staggering numbers of pupils and students

It is important to note that the ever-swelling numbers of learners in public schools have thrown school managers to panic mode. This is because the resources allocated to schools are not commensurate with the recruitment of teachers and the provision of other essentials in these schools. Survey on the ground indicate that the shortage of teachers in secondary schools stand at a whopping 85,258 this year up from 57,380 last year. In primary the shortage stands at 30,357. This is so bearing in mind that the ministry has to plan for the 10million pupils and about 2.8 million students. This severe shortage has forced the school managers to hire teachers on BOM terms to alleviate the situation. This has created another challenge on matters funds because the government subsidies are not for personal emoluments forcing them to survive on shoestring budgets in a bid to implement learning programmes in schools. The swelling numbers also have strained teachers especially those on duty leading to low morale and possible burnouts.

Subjects with biting shortage.

According to TSC some of the worst-hit subjects in teacher distribution are physics, cre, history, agriculture, English and math. These subjects have fewer teacher trainees even at the teacher training institutions and universities. It is ironical that schools are experiencing these acute shortages yet the country has 328,324 trained but jobless teachers!
