Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology may be facing a crisis soon after an inspection report revealed that 2 of its campuses in Kakamega and Eldoret did not meet the required set standards to operate. Consequently, the university has been served with a closure notice lest it addresses the issues raised within three months.
Kisii University has also been directed by the Commission for University Education CUE to address quality issues raised by the report in three of its satellite campuses in Kapenguria, Migori and Nairobi within 12 months.
According to the inspection report, JKUAT Kakamega Campus is over-relying on part-time academic staff hence creating a shortage of full-time staff. Other key challenges include inadequate supervisors to supervise the 718 postgraduate students, lack of a health unit, academic staff offices, departmental areas and students centre.
At JKUAT’s Migori Campus, the report revealed that there is a lot of distraction hence creating unfavourable conditions for learning. According to the report, the campus should address noise emanating from one side of the building and ensure that there is adequate print resource in the library. Besides, the campus should deploy qualified academic leaders.
The two universities have since received the audit reports directing them to act within the given time as from January, 2020.
