The Kenya Coast National Polytechnic has got nine departments with various courses ranging from diploma to artisan levels.
KENYA COAST NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC APPLIED SCIENCES DEPARTMENT’S LIST OF COURSES
There are currently four sections in the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic’s department of applied sciences.
These are Pharmaceutical Technology, Applied Chemistry, Food Science &Technology and Applied Biology.
The department of applied sciences at the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic offers certificates and diplomas whose curriculum is approved by the Ministry of Education and examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC to ensure quality.
This department has got three fully-equipped science laboratories and a pharmacy dispensing laboratory for practical lessons. The construction of four new laboratories for medical analysis, pharmaceutical practice, food processing and microbiology is underway.

1 DIPLOMA IN APPLIED BIOLOGY
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
KCSE mean grade of C- Minus and must have done well in sciences
ADMISSIONS
Admission for students wishing to undertake a diploma in applied biology is done every academic year.
COURSE OUTLINE AND DURATION
The course involves both theoretical and practical lessons. It takes three years to complete after which students will sit for KNEC exams.
EXAMINATION
Students wishing to earn a diploma in applied biology must undertake internal exams- two continuous assessment tests and a main end of term exam per term.
At the end of every academic year, students sit for a stage exam to determine whether they are well -prepared to proceed to the next year of study.
At the end of the three years of study, students are required to sit for a KNEC exam to enable them to graduate.
FIELD VISITS
Students at the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic usually go for field trips aimed at enhancing a deeper understanding of their course content to the following destinations of interest:
-The Marine Park
– Kenya Agricultural Research Institute
-Kenya Medical Research Institute
– Mamba Village
ATTACHMENT
Students are expected to go for three months of attachment to help them gain experience in their areas of specialization.
