As this year’s national examinations approach, the Kenya National Examination Council has spelt out a few dos and don’ts that must be adhered to during the entire examination period.

The tough regulations also entail tough penalties which will be imposed for both candidates and teachers if they fail to adhere to these rules:

  1. No candidates will be given extra time during KCPE and KCSE tests.
  2. Unnecessary movements by candidates will not be condoned. Only cases with special permission from the supervisor will be allowed.
  3. There should be no communication between candidates and strangers within or outside the school.
  4. Misbehaviour from the candidates will be treated as an attempt to cheat in the national exams. Therefore any misdemeanour or disturbance will be treated as an irregularity.
  5. Any candidate caught exposing their answers to fellow students within the examination room will also be punished. Candidates are advised to hide any sheet they have written on, their answers included.
  6. No candidate should carry prepared short notes to the examination room since this will attract tough penalties.
  7. Only papers and materials authorized by KNEC should be found within the examination room.
  8. No person will be allowed to access the exam material and expose the content to candidates whether orally or through written means.
  9. Any malicious damage to the examination materials will attract imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or a fine not exceeding 5 million or both.
  10. Impersonation will be highly penalized. In the event of an impostor student, s/ he will be prohibited from sitting an examination conducted by or on behalf of KNEC for three consecutive years.
  11. Possession of mobile phones within examination centres is an offence except for authorized officers. Candidates found in possession of mobile phones will have their results cancelled.
  12. Candidates, supervisors, invigilators or head teachers will not enter examination rooms with phones or other electronic gadgets.
  13. Supervisors and heads should keep their mobile phones in the office in case of an emergency that must be communicated to KNEC.
