President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the Ministry of Education to come up with guidelines that will ensure a gradual reopening of schools and other learning institutions by the start of the third term in September.
All tutors in Kenya will be expected to report to their various work stations 14 days before the official schools’ reopening date on September 1, 2020.
Speaking at the KICD offices in Nairobi today, the CS also added that the KCPE and KCSE national exams will be pushed to the year 2021. Therefore, the entire 2020 academic year will be considered lost and written off.

There will be no national exams for candidates in the year 2020.
This follows CS Magoha’s announcement today at the KICD offices at a press briefing on the reopening of schools and the new school calendar for the year 2020.
According to CS Magoha, mandatory covid-19 tests for all teachers is one of the measures that can contain the spread of the virus.
Besides schools’ reopening guidelines, the education ministry shall also announce new term dates for the 2020/2021 academic year by mid-August this year.

Education CS Professor George Magoha has today officially reopened schools to learners. This announcement therefore means that form four, class eight and grade four learners will report to their respective schools on Monday October 12, 2020.
“In the near future we will come up with plans to ensure children carry on with their education. We have allocated Kshs 6.5 billion to hire 10, 000 teachers and 1, 000 ICT interns to support digital learning,” said President Uhuru.
Education CS Professor George Magoha has provided a clue pointing towards a possible delay in the reopening of schools with high enrolments to avoid overcrowding when schools reopen in September.
The CS said that it is almost impossible that the government can double or triple facilities in learning institutions to achieve social distancing.
