Various accredited universities offer Courses in Education for prospective students who want to be teachers. The universities have course specific requirements for the various Arts and Sciences courses. They also offer various teaching subjects combinations. Egerton University has three (3) Campuses and one Campus College. The main Campus is based at Njoro and houses the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts and Social Sciences, Education and Community Studies, Engineering and Technology, Environment and Resources Development, Science and Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. The Njoro Campus also houses the Board of Undergraduate Studies and Field Attachment, and the Board of Postgraduate Studies. The other Campus is the Nairobi City Campus, offering programmes from the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Commerce, and Education and Community Studies. It also hosts the African Centre for Distance Education (ACDE). The third Campus, Kenyatta Campus, is located five (5) kilometres from Njoro Campus and is planned to house the Open and Distance Learning (CODL) programmes which is currently based at Njoro Campus. The only University’s Campus College, Nakuru Town Campus College, hosts the Faculties of Commerce and Health Sciences. The University currently has nine (9) faculties and fifty one (51) academic departments offering a wide range of programmes at diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. All of them are open to both Government-sponsored and selfsponsored students. The University also offers courses in computer literacy, computer repairs and maintenance, as well as accounting and bridging courses.Here are the Education courses offered at Egerton University and links to their application portals:

The university offers a wide range of education courses in its Faculty of Education.

Admission Requirements

Candidates admitted to the Degree of Bachelor of Education (Science) must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements of the Egerton University. They must also satisfy departmental requirements before registering for courses in the respective departments. In satisfying the minimum entrance requirements of the University, candidates must have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with the minimum grades against each subject as indicated below: C+ in Mathematics C+ in any of the following:
  • (i) Physics (ii)
  • Chemistry
  • (iii) Biology
  • (iv) Geography or B- in any of the following subjects: Physical Sciences Biological sciences Alternatively, admission may be granted to holders of Diploma/S1 certificate in science Education from Institutions recognised by Egerton University provided the diplomas are at credits and above.
Bachelor of Education Course Requirements:
  1. Mean grade C+ (Plus) at KCSE and at least C+ in each of the two teaching subjects,
  2. 2 principal passes at A’Level and 1 subsidiary in relevant subjects,
  3. Diploma in Education (May be exempted in relevant units).
  4. P1 teachers must have scored C+ at KCSE to qualify.

Congratulations for getting admission at Laikipia University after your successful application. Students joining Laikipia University are selected by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KCCPS. The students are selected after sitting their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examination and getting the minimum University entry requirement. The KCSE students must first apply to KUCCPS to be selected to preferred programmes. The students can apply at school level or apply individually during the first and second revision windows.

Once the applications are closed, KUCCPS then places the KCSE students in preferred courses depending on the student’s score, number of available vacancies against applicants among other selection criteria. In not satisfied with the University that you have been selected to join then you can apply for Inter-Institution Transfer.

The placement body then announces the selection results and students can access the admission lists and download their admission letters.

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has released the lists of shortlisted candidates for the various administrative posts that it had advertised in August, 2019. TSC had advertised 6,043 promotion/ administrative vacancies. Of these, 2,310 are for head teachers(T scale 10; Grade C5) while, the remaining 3,733 are for Deputy Head teachers II (T scale 9; Grade C4). Applications were submitted online and Shortlisted candidates have been invited for interviews at varied dates and venues.

WHAT TO CARRY TO THE INTERVIEWS

Shortlisted candidates will be required to present the following documents during the interviews:

  • 1). Certificate of good conduct
  • 2). Clearance Certificate by the Higher Education Loans Board, Helb.
  • 3). Clearance Certificate from EACC
  • 4). Clearance Certificate from a Credit Reference Bureau
  • 5). KRA tax compliance certificate.
  • Academic and Professional documents
  • TPAD hard copies for 2017, 2018 and 2019.
  • Any other relevant, supportive, document.

For shortlisted Deputy head teachers, they will be expected to carry the following:

  • 1. Original National ID Card,
  • 2. Current pay slip
  • 3. Original Academic and Professional Certificates,
  • 4. Letter of appointment as Deputy Head Teacher,
  • 5. Letter of designation to Deputy Head Teacher II (Grade C4/Scale 9).
  • 6. Analysed individual subject results and those of the institution in KCPE Examinations for the last three years, certified by TSC County Director.
  • 7. Performance Appraisal Reports for 2017, 2018 and 2019
  • 8. Originals of the following statutory documents: –
  1. Clearance from Higher Education Loans Board (HELB)Certificate of good conduct from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID
  2. Tax Compliance certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
  3.  Clearance from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
  4. Credit Reference Certificate from Credit Reference Bureci
  5. Any other relevant testimonials supporting your performance.

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT

According to the TSC advert, for one to be appointed to the grade of Head Teacher, a teacher must:-

  1. Be serving under career progression guidelines
  2. Have served as Deputy Head Teacherfor a minimum period ofthree (3) years;
  3. Be currently serving as Deputy Head Teacher II TSC Scale 9;
  4. Be in possession of a Bachelor of Education degree or its equivalent;
  5. Have satisfactory rating in the performance appraisal;
  6. Meet the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution;
  7. Have demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor and provide professional support.

On the other hand, one must meet the following requirements in order to qualify for appointment to the grade of Deputy Head Teacher II:-

  • ii. Have served as Senior Teacher for a minimum period of three (3) years;
  • iii. Be currently serving as Senior Teacher I T- Scale 8;

  • vi. Have demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor and provide professional support to other teachers;
  • vii. Meet the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution; and

You may have had difficulties accessing the new Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD 2) portal. Maybe you have taken too long to access your account on TPAD 2. Worry not. The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has changed the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) or simply address to access the new TPAD 2. This is after numerous complaints were raised by teachers on the troublesome link; issued before.

The beauty with the new address/ link is that it loads pretty fast. All that you need to log in is your TSC Number, ID Number and password. But, you must first register to be able to access the portal. The new link to access the TPAD 2 is; http://35.229.67.130/auth/login

HOW TO EASILY REGISTER FOR NEW TPAD 2 ACCOUNT

The process of registering for the new TPAD account is flawless. It can be done even via your mobile phone. See the steps below:

  • Access the new TPAD 2 registration portal by clicking on this link; http://35.229.67.130/auth/create_account
  • Now enter the required data; TSC Number, Phone Number, ID Number, E-mail and password.
  • Click on ‘Create Account’ once through.
  • Your account will be created and logged onto automatically.
  • In the new window, add your level of education and subjects combination details.
  • To update information on Subject Combination, select ‘Subject Combination’ Tab. Then, click on ‘Add Subjects Combination’. Now, type in your subjects and click on ‘Submit’.
  • To add your qualification details, select the ‘Level of Education’ tab followed by ‘Add Education Level’. Select your KCSE Grade, Highest Level of Education and Institution where you attended. Click on ‘Submit’ once done.
  • Now you can proceed to log into your account by clicking on ‘proceed to Log in’.

MUTONGUNI SECONDARY SCHOOL’S KCSE RESULTS

Individual candidates can check their KCSE results by sending an SMS with their full index number (11digits) followed by the word KCSE. The SMS can be sent from any subscriber’s line (Safaricom, Airtel or any other) to 20076. For example, send the SMS in the format 23467847002KCSE to 20076. There should be no space left between the index number and the word KCSE.

One can also download the whole school’s KCSE results by Visiting the Official KNEC exams portal; https://www.knec-portal.ac.ke/.  This one requires the school’s log in credentials.

Finally, candidates can visit the school for their results. This is usually a day after the results have been released. It is important that you check your result slip to ensure there are no errors on it. Be keen to see that details such as your name, index number and sex are accurate. In case of any discrepancy, please notify your principal or KNEC immediately for correction.

Close to 46,000 teachers are yet to declare their wealth online ahead of the deadline slated for 31/12/2019. All teachers in employment under TSC are required to declare their Income, Assets and Liabilities

The online portal has been open since 1st November 2019.

The Kenyan law requires all public officers to declare their wealth; periodically. This declaration is made online and there are hefty penalties for officers who fail to declare their income, assets and liabilities within the stipulated time. According to the Public Ethics Act of 2003, It is mandatory for all public officers to declare their income, assets and liabilities once in every two years.

Any teacher in TSC employment who fails to submit a Declaration or gives false or misleading information is liable to a fine of Kshs. 1,000,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding (1) one year or both upon conviction.

Perhaps you have been tarmacking too long after graduating with your Diploma or Bachelors Degree in Education. Maybe your efforts to get employed by the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, have been in vain after attempting several times. And you are at the blink of giving up on the teaching profession. You are not alone my dear friend. There are thousands of graduate teachers out there who find themselves in this precarious situation. TSC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Before you dive into the teaching profession, ensure that you have read and understood the current minimum requirements for one to be certified by TSC. For example, if you are intending to pursue a Bachelors of Education Degree Programme you must have scored a minimum of a C+ in each of the two teaching subjects you wish to teach at high school. This requirement has locked out many graduates. For instance, if want to be a Maths/ Physics Teacher then you must have a minimum of a C+ in each of these two subjects. The subjects you choose to study at the university or college play a significant role in terms of how fast you will be absorbed by TSC. PERFORMANCE AT KCSE AND UNIVERSITY/ COLLEGE

Your KCSE mean grade sometimes come in handy during TSC recruitment sessions. In case two applicants tie, then the panelists will have a look at the candidate with stronger KCSE certificate. Applicants who actively participate in Co-curricular activities have a upper hand in clinching TSC slots. Try to at least participate in one or two Co- curricular activities and ensure you are certified or given a recommendation letter to that effect.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMES

The Commission has enlisted the services of teachers working on the internship programme. In the past, such teachers have had an added advantage over their colleagues since TSC produced marking schemes favouring the Intern teachers.

PRESENTATION AND FIRST IMPRESSION

The first impression you create lasts longer. Be smart during interviews. Try to be eloquent. Above all be sincere.

YEARS STAYED OUT AFTER GRADUATION.

Unfortunately, or fortunately I should say, the current TSC recruitment guidelines and marking scheme favours graduates who have stayed out longer. The longer you stay out the more marks you are awarded.

Finally, do not give up. Never pay fraudsters who give false employment promises.

Individual candidates can check their KCSE results by sending an SMS with their full index number (11digits) followed by the word KCSE. The SMS can be sent from any subscriber’s line (Safaricom, Airtel or any other) to 20076. For example, send the SMS in the format 23467847002KCSE to 20076. There should be no space left between the index number and the word KCSE.

One can also download the whole school’s KCSE results by Visiting the Official KNEC exams portal; https://www.knec-portal.ac.ke/.  This one requires the school’s log in credentials.

Finally, candidates can visit the school for their results. This is usually a day after the results have been released. It is important that you check your result slip to ensure there are no errors on it. Be keen to see that details such as your name, index number and sex are accurate. In case of any discrepancy, please notify your principal or KNEC immediately for correction.
