New KUCCPS requirements for Education courses

It will now not be easy for you to pursue a degree in education without meeting set minimum grades in Mathematics and English. According to the requirements from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), a candidate must have to score at-least a C (plain) in English to undertake any teaching degree programme. This is in addition to the minimum cluster points set by respective universities.

A student will also have to score a minimum of a D+ (plus) in Mathematics so as to be admitted to a Bachelor of Education (Arts) course. Those seeking to be science teachers must score a minimum of a C (plain) in Mathematics and a C+ (plus) in any of the Sciences offered at high school.

The above requirements will lock out many Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) graduates intending to pursue teaching related courses.

KUCCPS has placed education Science and Arts degree programmes in cluster 22. For Bachelor of Education Arts; Four cluster subjects are considered. These are:

  • Cluster Subject One: English (A minimum of C plain is required)
  • Cluster Subject Two: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
  • Cluster Subject Three: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Religious Education
  • Cluster Subject Four: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Kiswahili……

Individual candidates can check their KCSE results by sending an SMS with their full index number (11digits) followed by the word KCSE. The SMS can be sent from any subscriber’s line (Safaricom, Airtel or any other) to 20076. For example, send the SMS in the format 23467847002KCSE to 20076. There should be no space left between the index number and the word KCSE.

One can also download the whole school’s KCSE results by Visiting the Official KNEC exams portal; https://www.knec-portal.ac.ke/.  This one requires the school’s log in credentials.

Finally, candidates can visit the school for their results. This is usually a day after the results have been released. It is important that you check your result slip to ensure there are no errors on it. Be keen to see that details such as your name, index number and sex are accurate. In case of any discrepancy, please notify your principal or KNEC immediately for correction.

Important update for teachers who applied for the TSC Internship vacancies in Kisii County. The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has released the lists of shortlisted candidates for the advertized 10,300 teacher internship posts for Primary and Secondary Schools. According to the Commission, the lists of shortlisted applicants has been dispatched to all counties. “Applicants are advised that interviews shall be conducted at the county TSC offices. A list of applicants have been sent to each county,” reads a memo dated November 7, 2019 from Catherine Lenairoshi; of TSC Corporate Communications Office. According to instructions on the memo, the shortlisted Candidates are required to carry the following to the interviews; whose dates will be announced in due course:
  • i. A valid certificate of Good conduct
  • ii. A valid personal accident cover
  • iii. National ID card
  • iv. Disability card if any
  • v. Two passport size photographs
  • vi. KCSE certificate
  • vii. KCPE certificate
  • viii. Diploma / degree certificate and Transcripts
  • ix. Primary/secondary or college leaving certificate
  • x. Kra pin

LOCATION

Masai Technical Training Institute is a Government institution under Technical, Vocational Education & Training Authority (TVETA), under the Ministry of Education. It is situated in Kajiado Town (Along Nairobi – Namanga Road) 70 Kms from Nairobi. It has a huge staff of fully qualified Trainers in their respective fields.

The institute started offering Technical courses in 1986. Since then, the institute has registered more than twelve thousand (12,000) trainees.

A Board of Governors appointed by the Ministry of Education manages the institute. The day-to-day management of the institute is vested in the principal.

  Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. The Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec, has completed the process of capturing details of candidates for the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Candidates and/ or schools can now be able to check the details of the registered candidates so as to ensure they are correct. This would also present parents/ guardians with a chance to ensure that their kids have been enlisted for this year’s national examinations. Cases of learners being turned away in the last minute for failing to be registered for the exams have been reported in the past.

Confirming registration details is also key as it provides candidates with an opportunity to ensure their names, gender and subjects are accurate. In the past, candidates have been forced to sit for subjects they did not wish to undertake.

HOW TO CHECK REGISTRATION STATUS VIA SMS

Thanks to Knec, you can now be able to check your registration status via a mobile phone. The system is now open and you can use the procedure below:

  • Go to new SMS on your mobile phone.
  • Type in your Index Number and Exam in the format IndexnumberExam (there should be no space between the two). For example: 111111116589KCSE for KCSE and 123451134501KCPE for KCPE exams.
  • Send this SMS to 20076 from any line (Safaricom, Airtel, Telkom).
  • Note that each SMS costs Sh25 and the Index Number should have 12 Digits.
  • You will receive an SMS with your registration details. Please check to see if the details are correctly captured. In case of any disparity, inform your Principal/ Head of Institution immediately for further guidance and assistance.

Return all the transferred non-local teachers from Garissa over insecurity- TSC asked

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has been asked to revoke the recent transfers of all non-local teachers from Garissa over insecurity. Ijara Constituency Member of Parliament Hon.Sophia Abdi Noor has castigated the Commission for taking unilateral decisions by transferring the teachers and leaving learners from the North Eastern Region unattended.

“I have today (Tuesday February 4, 2020) joined my fellow leaders from,Garissa, Wajir and Mandera to discuss the insecurity in the region and the mass exodus of the teachers from the region initiated by the TSC unilaterally without consulting the leadership and even their agents in the field. Whereas we condemn in the strongest possible terms the inhuman acts of terror we as a country should not have fallen into their traps by transferring all the TSC teachers in the region without replacement and in the process creating an educational crisis. We are strongly asking the TSC to revoke all the transfers immediately,” says Hon Abdi.

This comes after TSC announced the transfers of all non-local teachers from Garissa County over insecurity related issues. The Commission is at the same time processing the transfers of teachers working in Mandera and Wajir counties. The transfers have been occasioned by the constant attacks from the terror group Al-Shabaab. The group has been unleashing terror attacks on the non local teachers since 2018.

But, the Legislator now says the local leaders will work closely with the communities’ members to ensure security of the teachers. “On our part as leaders we will encourage our communities to share timely information and intelligence with our security forces so that we can secure our borders,” She adds.

Angry ijara residents have been staging protests (since Monday) over the mass transfers of the teachers from the area.
“The Ijara residents express their disappointment and dissatisfaction with the Commission and the Government in general. While the residents already suffer greatly in the hands of the outlawed terrorist group, the reactive decisions often made rub salt onto the wound,” Hon Abdi explains.

The MP is said to have allegedly stormed the local TSC office and locked it on Monday.

According to her, Parents are worried that the TSC’s decision to transfer teachers will only worsen the already dire education and security situation as idle children will now be exposed to radicalization. She says the decision will further encourage the terror groups in conducting more heinous attacks as the Government now appears “ weak.”

Teachers who have fled the region have vowed never to go back.
