Government makes it free for KCSE, KCPE candidates’ registration by KNEC

The government has announced that registration for KCSE and KCPE examinations will be free for all candidates. While presenting the 2020-2021 financial year national budget on June 11, 2020 Treasury CS Ukur Yatani said the government had allocated Sh4 billion for examination fee waiver for all class eight and form four candidates.

Currently, the government of Kenya pays examination fees for all candidates in public and private schools except: candidates who are re-sitting/repeaters, Non-citizens candidates; Candidates in Prison and Private candidates registering in the Sub County private examination centres.

The Kenya National Examinations Council, knec, charges registration fees as shown in the tables below.

This is by paying the KNEC examination fee for both KCPE and KCSE fresh candidates for the past few years.

The case is however different when it comes to candidates wishing to sit their KCPE and KCSE exams for the second time-repeaters.

Unlike fresh candidates, parents, or guardians of KCPE and KCSE repeaters are expected to fully meet the cost of exams.

The surcharged fee is usually paid to the official KNEC accounts by school headteachers and principals.

The registration of candidates for the 2020 KCPE, KCSE, and KCSE QT exams is ongoing. The deadline for registration has been set on February 15 2020.

Below is a breakdown of the applicable fees for the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, repeaters, and non-Kenyans.

2020 KCSE REGISTRATION FEES FOR PROJECT-BASED SUBJECTS

2020 KCSE candidates taking Agriculture, Woodwork, Art, and Design, Home Science, and other project-based subjects are required to pay an additional fee to facilitate their projects.

Those taking Agriculture & Home Science will pay Kshs 200 whereas those taking Aviation Technology will pay up to Kshs 2, 500.

KCSE subject codes 2021 The Kenya National Examinations Council has received accolade from the world over for maintaining standards that are above par during administration of national examinations.

Did you know that the Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec offers a total of 30 examinable subjects from which KCSE candidates can select at least 7. 

The 30 KCSE Knec subjects are further grouped into five subject clusters for easier selection. The subject clusters are crucial when determining cluster points later for entry to tertiary level  learning institutions such as universities and colleges.

Knec KCSE subject Clusters 2020/2021

Group I

It consists of compulsory KCSE subjects.

This means that every candidate being enrolled for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, must select these subjects.

Group II

Loosely referred to as Sciences. Every KCSE candidate must attempt at least 2 subjects from this category.

Group III

These are referred to as Humanities. They belong to the optional Knec KCSE subjects.

KCSE Knec Registration Fee

The government usually meets registration fees for all fresh KCSE candidates.

Repeating candidates however are expected to pay the fees as shown below

Basic fees 2700 per candidate

Subject fee 400 per subject

Regular private candidates

A candidate taking 7 KCSE Knec subjects will pay 5,500, 8 subjects- 5,900 whereas one who sits for 9 subjects will pay 6, 300.

KCSE candidates repeating less than 7 subjects will pay as follows

1 subject 3,100

2 subjects 3,500

3 subjects 3, 900

4 Subjects 4,300

5 subjects 4, 700

Note that KCSE candidates undertaking subjects with projects or practical components will pay an extra Kshs 200 for each. Those taking subject with oral components will pay Kshs 500 while those taking Aviation Technology will pay Kshs 2500.

Knec subject choices 2020/2021

Group I all the three subjects

Group II at least 2 subjects

Group III At least one subject

Group IV 1 subject

Candidates can sit for 9 subjects and an extra 1 or 2 subjects can be selected from the remaining groups ie II, III, IV and V.
