KUCCPS: How and Why KUCCPS lowered cut-off points for KCSE Candidates in 2022-2023 Placement/ admissions

KUCCPS News Today: The 2022-2023 cut 0ff points for bachelor of education science, agricultural courses, fashion and design face a major paradigm shift after KUCCPS decided to alter subject combinations-cluster points. For instance, Kiswahili will be used as a substitute for English when determining the cluster points for Bachelor of Education science students. Mathematics will also be substituted with other subjects so that the mandatory requirement of Mathematics in Bachelor of Education courses will be dropped.

Government Lowers and Relaxes Cluster Point Requirements for Some Courses in 2022-2023

Thousands of students seeking to join universities and colleges this have a reason to smile after the government through KUCCPS lowered the minimum qualifications for some courses offered in various universities across the country.

Learners who will be joining university this year will be required to pick alternative subjects to meet minimum requirements for some degree courses.

Due to reforms and developments in the education sector and demands from the job market, the government has introduced new courses to cater for dynamics in the job market.

The greatest beneficiaries of the process are students wishing to pursue bachelors degree courses in education, agriculture, fashion and design among others.

The reviews will see the minimum grade for mathematics, biology and other subjects requirements in some courses lowered or substituted with other subjects.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Mercy Wahome said the criteria was reached to recognise areas such as agriculture and education where many students are disadvantaged by the minimum subject requirements to enrol in universities.

The new guidelines will take effect in the upcoming university and college placement for KCSE students who will sit for the national examinations in March this year.

In the new guidelines, Wahome also said that home science will be recognised as one of the subjects for the students seeking to pursue degree courses in fashion and design which has not been the case ,previously.

Further, she said that in the new changes Kiswahili will be accepted as an alternative subject for English for students wishing to take a degree in education science. For students seeking to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education arts mathematics will not be a minimum subject requirement.

On the other hand for students seeking to pursue degree courses in Agribusiness and Agricultural economics, the minimum requirements for biology have been lowered from C+ to C plain.

As the government eases qualification requirements for degree courses ,Universities and colleges are likely to face a strain on their resources due to high admissions levels.

KUCCPS LATEST CHANGES TO BACHELOR OF EDUCATION COURSES
Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) chief executive Agnes Wahome has written to vice-chancellors in both public and private universities directing them to adjust and review their programmes to align them with new proposals from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

“On February 24, the placement service received proposals on the reviewed placement criteria to degree programmes from the TSC,” said Dr. Wahome in the circular dated April 26. She said TSC proposals take cognizance of the introduction of several education courses and recommendations of the CBC Taskforce.

According to TSC chief executive Nancy Macharia, each student pursuing education should have three teaching subjects, (two major subjects and one minor) for cost-effectiveness and proper utilization of the teacher.

“This will assist the commission to handle the new areas that have been introduced in the CBC for junior and senior secondary,” said Ms. Macharia, adding that “the whole course will take five years and a half”.

Ms. Macharia said students will be required to undertake a two full-term practicum of six months after completing the course.

In all the degree programmes, students will also be required to pursue additional professional courses in curriculum development, psychology, and sociology in education, mentorship and coaching programmes, performance management, education action research management, foundations in education, and educational leadership.
