NHIF: Why TSC teachers are being scrapped off NHIF list

COVID-19: NHIF TO COVER CORONAVIRUS PATIENTS AND THEIR REGISTERED DEPENDENTS IN DESIGNATED HOSPITALS

INSURANCE POLICIES DO NOT COVER EPIDEMICS AND PANDEMICS SUCH AS COVID-19 BUT…

The National Health Insurance Fund, NHIF has given a clear position in as far as medical insurance for Covid-19 patients is concerned.

According to NHIF, it is impossible to project and accurately determine the magnitude and the exact duration of pandemics. As a global practice, once declared by the World Health Organization, WHO, pandemics and epidemics are generally not covered by insurance policies.

The global practice is also in line with the contracts signed by NHIF with various hospital facilities.

However, since NHIF takes into account the health and wellness of its members and in support of Government efforts in mitigating and containing the spread of coronavirus, the insurance cover will support all covid-19 positive members and their registered beneficiaries who get admitted to the following designated hospital facilities:

Kenyatta National Teaching and Referral Hospital

Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital

Mbagathi Hospital

Designated County Facilities

Any other facility that may be designated by the Ministry of Health, MOH

NOTE: the NHIF will not be liable for covid-19 bills incurred in facilities not designated by the Ministry of Health as covid-19 treatment centers.

“Following the outbreak of the coronavirus in December 2019, the World Health Organization, WHO on March 11 declared Covid-19 a global pandemic. The first case in Kenya was confirmed on March 15, 2020, and the President consequently declared Covid-19 a public health concern and a pandemic.

Due to the inability to project and to accurately model the magnitude and duration of pandemics, as a global practice, once declared by WHO, epidemics and pandemics are generally not covered by insurance policies. This is also in line with the contracts that the National Hospital Insurance Fund has signed with your facility under Clause 8 General exclusions, subsection 8.2.14 on epidemics and pandemics, and clause 2.21 on benefits coordination, sub-section 2.21.3, which guides government coordinated programs.

The health and wellness of our members is of utmost importance to us, and in support of the government’s efforts in mitigating and containing the spread of covid-19, we shall support all Covid-19 positive members and their declared beneficiaries who get admitted to the Ministry of Health, MoH designated facilities outlined below;

Kenyatta National Teaching and Referral Hospital

Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital

Mbagathi Hospital

Designated County Facilities

Any other facility that may be designated by the Ministry of Health, MOH

NHIF shall not be liable for bills incurred in non-MoH designated health facilities.

I take this opportunity to appreciate your continued support in offering quality healthcare services to NHIF beneficiaries,” wrote NHIF.
