Okiya Omtatah is a family man with a wife and four children.
He however lost his beloved daughter, the third born on April 17, 2020. She succumbed to acute Malaria after being in a coma for a week in a Nairobi-based Hospital.

Activist Okiya Omtatah’s family is in deep sorrow right now after one of their own passed on.
21-year-old Maryann Marisyanna Annuarite died on Friday after suffering acute malaria. She had spent a week in a coma at a Nairobi based hospital.
Annuarite was a third-year student at Riara University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in diplomacy and international relations.
She is the third born out of Omtatah’s four children.
OKIYA OMTATAH EDUCATION BACKGROUND
Okiya Omtatah went to St Paul’s Secondary School (form 1 and 2) and St Peter’s School, Mukumu( form 3 and 4) for his high school education.
He was later admitted at St Peter’s School in Mukumu for form five and six.
He excelled in his studies and was later admitted to the University of Nairobi to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. He however turned down the offer and opted to go for a Diploma in Philosophy at St, Augustine in Mabanga, Bungoma.
It was later discovered that he had a grand mal after suffering a fatal injury –Okiya almost became mad.
He later joined the Kenya Polytechnic and pursued Mechanical and Automotive Engineering and graduated with a diploma.
OKIYA OMTATAH CAREER
Despite graduating with a diploma in mechanical and automotive engineering, Okiya Omtatah has always leaned towards activism.
At some point, a group of lawyers accused him of “stealing” their jobs.
His activism dates back to his high school days. At St Peter’s School, students were free to express themselves. They had an area referred to as the Stone of Wisdom where they could express themselves without fear of victimization.
It is at St Peter’s that Okiya Omtatah began to acknowledge the importance of freedom of speech.
OKIYA OMTATAH SICKNESS
Omtatah suffered a fatal brain injury while schooling to become a priest which rendered him unfit for priesthood.
He consequently became epileptic and his health deteriorated. He was taken to Aga Khan Hospital and was diagnosed with grand mal, a permanent condition.
When asked whether he ever recovered from the illness, Omtatah said yes, with the help of traditional medicine.
He got a concoction which put an end to the seizures and when he went back to Aga Khan for reassessment, there were no traces of grand mal.
