Top 10 richest (most opulent) billionaires per county: Murang’ a County

The Mwangi wa Iria led Murang’ a County is home to many Kenyan billionaires. Some of the richest sons of Murang’ a County have known to be great investors in the banking and business sector.

In this article, we shall explore the list of Murang’ a County’s top 10 richest billionaires. They include Equity bank chair Peter Munga, CEO James Mwangi, Britam Boss Benson Wairegi, Investment banker Jimnah Mbaru, renowned businessman Gerald Gikonyo, Gershon Kirima, industrialist Chris Kirubi among others.

Surprisingly, most of Murang’ a County’s top 10 richest billionaires hail from a native village in Murang’ a County, Central Region of Kenya called Rwathia Village.

Peter Munga (Equity Bank chair), James Mwangi (CEO Equity Bank) and Benson Wairegi (Britam Boss) once worked together as mere village men to build their riches. Currently, the trio share board directorship in leading companies: Equity bank and Britam-one of the biggest insurance firms in Kenya and

Peter Munga: Equity Bank chair

Born in 1943, Peter Munga has steadily built his wealth over the years.

Munga founded Equity Building Society (EBS) in his hometown, Kangema  in 1984 before it became a fully established bank-Equity Bank in August 2014.

Peter Munga once worked as an assistant secretary at the Ministry of Water before resigning in 1993.

James Mwangi: CEO of Equity Bank

Born in 1962, the husband and father of four James Mwangi is one of the richest billionaires in Murang’ a County.

James Mwangi is the current Group Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of Equity Group Holdings Limited, a popular bank in Kenya.

At the age of 31, James Mwangi  who is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi got hired to resolve the endless insolvency and loss of profits at the Equity Building Society currently referred to as Equity Bank by his counter-part Peter Munga.

 

Jimnah Mbaru: Investment Banker

The current Chair and CEO of the Dyer and Blair Investment Bank Jimnah Mbaru is a renowned billionaire in Murang’ a County.

At 69 years old, Jimnah Mbaru is proud of the numerous achievements he has been able to accomplish including serving as a civil servant in various capacities.

Jimnah Mbaru left the civil service in 1980 and set up several banks all of which were taken over by the late President Moi as a way of regulating the banking industry.

Some of them include Jimba Credit Corporation Ltd, Union Bank of Kenya Ltd and the Kenya Savings and Mortgages Ltd.

Gerald Gikonyo and Gerishon Kirima: Prominent businessmen

The two founded Rwathia Distributors influencing other key investors the likes of Peter Munga, Benson Wairegi and James Mwangi to work from a united front to put Rwathia Village on the Map.

According to Dr. Bitange Ndemo’s “The Mystery of Success” in 2014, Rwathia Village contributes up to 20% of Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product and nearly half of Kenya’s stock market.

Chris Kirubi: Industrialist, businessman, and philanthropist

Born in 1941, the businessman, entrepreneur, industrialist and philanthropist Chris Kirubi is also one of the richest men in Murang’ a County.

Chris Kirubi is the director and the greatest shareholder at Centum Investment Company Ltd- a business conglomerate

Benson Wairegi: Britam Boss

Born in 1953, the British-American Investments Company, Britam current Group Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer Benson Wairegi is also listed among the top 10 richest billionaires in Murang’ a County.

His history at Britam traces back to his golden days as a Chief Accountant at Britam at a tender age of 24 years.

Wairegi holds a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA)-Accounting from the University of Nairobi.

Benson Wairegi is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
