2021 KUCCPS placement news for KCSE 2020 candidates

Advertisements

All the 2020 KCSE candidates will get places at Universities, after all. This ends the speculations that the Government was planning to change the minimum entry grade to university from the normal C+ (plus). The process of placing the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Candidates into higher institutions of learning has been started.

The candidates will now be able to know their courses and higher learning institutions they will join. The Process will be carried out by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

Education Cabinet Secretary, Professor George Magoha, on Monday 24th May, launched the selection process at the Joseph Kangethe primary school in Nairobi. Over 143,149 candidates who scored the minimum university entry grade of (C+, plus and above) will secure a slot in both private and public universities under the government-sponsored programme.

The candidates with C+ (plus) and above will now jostle for the available vacancies and courses in universities. Of these; 893 scored A (plain), 6,420 had A- (minus) while, 14,427 garnered grade B+ (plus). Others were: 25,207 (B plain), 38,194 (B- minus) and 57,999 (C+ plus).

CS George Magoha says the TVET system and Universities have places for all the 747,171 candidates who sat for the 2020 KCSE exams.

Other KCSE 2020 candidates, who will not make it for the degree courses, will be placed in colleges and TVET institutions.

Previous admissions

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) emerged the most preferred university after leading in the numbers of new students’ admissions for the 2020/2021 academic year.

In the admissions results released by the Kenya universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KUCCPS, the institution admitted 6,006 students who sat for the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examinations. University of Nairobi, UON, cliched second spot after getting 5,894 new students. In third position was Maseno university that got a share of 5,716 admissions. Kenyatta, Kisii and Moi universities got 5,659, 5,566 and 4,948 students; respectively.

This was the third year in a row that JKUAT was taking the lion share of the new students’ slots.

Kabarak and Daystar universities were the only universities that were able to admit more students than their declared capacity. The two are private universities.

Factors to consider before choosing an education course

Before settling on any teaching combination, it is necessary for you to do a thorough background research and consultations. Some of the main considerations that you must consider include:

  • Cluster points requirements: Various universities have different cluster points requirements for the same course. Therefore, before settling on a university to join for the teaching course, check its minimum cluster requirements in the table below.
  • Subject requirements: Apart from cluster requirements, the education degree choices have different subject requirements. Check the latest subject requirements for Bachelor of Education Science and Arts Courses in the table below.
  • Ease of employment upon graduation: Some subject combinations are currently flooded. If you qualify for a teaching combination that is less flooded, then you should rather take it immediately.
  • Available Capacity: It is also important to know the course capacities per university. This will enable you make an informed decision on the university to join.

Kuccps subject requirements

HERE ARE THE MAIN STEPS INVOLVED IN THE KUCCPS INTER-UNIVERSITY/ INSTITUTION TRANSFER PROCESS

Step 1: The dissatisfied applicant tenders his or her request to initiate the KUCCPS online inter-university transfer process once the placement service opens its portal by filling a form available at the KUCCPS portal.

Step 2: The applicant’s inter-university transfer form is submitted to the receiving institution for processing.

Step 3: The applicant’s request is processed and if they qualify for the inter-university transfer, the receiving institution shall endorse the application then forward it to the releasing institution for further processing.

Step 4: The receiving institution receives the application and clears the applicant through the institutions’ portal before submitting it to the KUCCPS CEO for approval.

Step 5: The CEO KUCCPS receives the endorsed/approved inter-university application, approves it for a transfer letter to be generated.

Step 6: The applicant can now access the approved inter-university transfer letter for presentation to the receiving institution.

KUCCPS OPENS 2020/2021 INTER-UNIVERSITY TRANSFER PORTAL; ACTIVATES LINK: HERE ARE SOME CRUCIAL FACTORS YOU MAY NEED TO CONSIDER BEFORE TENDERING YOUR TRANSFER REQUEST

The KUCCPS 2020/2021 inter-university transfer portal is now open for the next two months. Fresh entrants who were not satisfied with their placement results for the 2020/2021 academic year are free to move to their preferred institutions/ universities.

However, there are crucial factors that the applicant must consider before applying for KUCCPS inter-university/institution transfer to ensure that the application goes through successfully.

Advertisements

Some of these factors include

FACTORS CONSIDERED WHEN APPLYING FOR INTER-UNIVERSITY/INSTITUTION TRANSFER

Since the process of inter-university transfer is rigorous; it is good to do a quick background check on some of the following factors to avoid making gross mistakes:

Advertisements

CLUSTER POINTS/ CUT OFF POINTS

Before applying for a KUCCPS inter-university transfer, remember to check whether your cluster points for the course you would like to pursue exceed your preferred university’s cut off points.

Unlike in the past whereby KCSE candidates who had attained the minimum entry requirements to universities and colleges were forced to calculate their cluster points manually, the KUCCPS system is automated to calculate every KCSE candidate’s cluster points for all available programmes/ courses.

Cluster points definition

What is a cluster point?

The term cluster points refer to a tabulated figure usually acquired by calculating the number of points for four basic subjects that have to be considered for every course choice. The four subjects are considered to be the most relevant to your preferred course/ programme.

For example, a student wishing to pursue a degree in Nursing must attain certain points in Mathematics, Biology, English, and Chemistry. These four are also referred to as core cluster subjects.

During the revision of KUCCPS choices, KUCCPS provides cluster subjects for every course/ choice which differs from one university to the other.

AVAILABLE KUCCPS SLOTS IN YOUR PREFERRED UNIVERSITY/ INSTITUTION

KUCCPS provided a list of available slots for all the universities and available slots.

Therefore, it is good to confirm the capacity of your receiving institution and whether it has any unfilled slots especially in the course/programme that you would like to pursue.

If your preferred institution is full or almost full, then it is common sense to scout for other institutions that are likely to approve your transfer application easily.

PREFERRED UNIVERSITY/ INSTITUTION’S COMPETITIVENESS

It is also advisable to appreciate the fact that although all universities are equal, some are more equal than others.

If you are therefore seeking an inter-university/ institution transfer to a highly competitive university, chances are that your transfer form application is likely to be rejected on grounds that the university is already full.

Some of the highly sought after universities include The University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and Kenyatta University due to their location within the Capital.

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR INTER-UNIVERSITY/ INSTITUTION TRANSFER

Lastly, it is advisable to give a valid reason that can easily sway the inter-university results. Remember that applying for an inter-university transfer does not automatically qualify you. Your application has to undergo verification before you can finally receive your results.

On your application form, you must give reasons for applying for the KUCCPS inter-university transfer. Your reasons had better be good enough, otherwise, your transfer application will get trashed.

Below are some of the reasons that you can give to justify your KUCCPS 2020/2021 Inter-university transfer:

  1. You can argue that the cost of living and tuition fees is rather too high for you
  2. Secondly, you can peg your reasons for unfavorable/ unconducive climatic conditions that are likely to affect your general health. This reason requires medical evidence.
  3. You can also say that the location of the institution is not ideal for you especially if you have got other engagements. For instance if you have enrolled for another course within Nairobi which you will be undertaking alongside the KUCCPS choice, then it will be easier to convince the board to transfer you to an institution/ university that is within Nairobi. Remember to give evidence to back your application.
