<p><strong>The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC has extended the deadline for uploading KCSE 2020 candidates’ scores in Milestones I and II for all Group IV Subjects till further notice.</strong></p>
<p><strong>On January 20, 2020, KNEC issued an official circular instructing secondary school principals and sub-county directors of education to see to it that KCSE 2020 candidates’ scores for milestones I and II were uploaded onto the official KNEC portal provided below in time.</strong></p>

<p><strong>KNEC 2020: Uploading of KCSE 2020 Candidates’ Score Postponed following Coronavirus Outbreak in Kenya</strong></p>
<p><strong>The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC has postponed the process of uploading KCSE 2020 Candidates’ scores for Group IV subjects following coronavirus outbreak in Kenya until further notice.</strong></p>
<p><strong>KNEC’s Group IV subjects include Art and Design (443/3), Woodwork (444/2), Metal Work (445/2), Computer Studies (451/3), Agriculture (443/3) and Building &; Construction (446/2).</strong></p>
<p><strong>KNEC’s circular dated March 27, 2020 copied to all school principals indicates that guidelines on the handling of the two milestones, milestones 1 and 2 of Group IV subjects will be given once schools reopen.</strong></p>
<p><strong>“Consequently, KNEC wishes to inform you that further guidelines on the handling of milestones 1 and 2 of Group IV projects will be issued when schools reopen” wrote Dr. Mercy Karogo, KNEC’s acting CEO.</strong></p>
<p><strong>This move follows President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive that all learning institutions be shut down indefinitely.</strong></p>

<p><strong>This means that learning is likely to resume on April 16, 2020, if Kenya manages to contain the spread of coronavirus.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Besides, travel bans to the UK where the Kenya Certificate Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam papers get printed may delay the entire process.</strong></p>
<p><strong>School heads have also expressed their concerns regarding the disruption of KCSE practical exams for Group IV subjects such as Agriculture, Home Science, Woodwork, etc.</strong></p>
<p><strong>According to The Standard, top KNEC officials have been trapped in the coronavirus lockdown. They cannot travel to Britain to fast track the revision and printing of KCPE and KCSE national exams.</strong></p>

<p>Theses are simple insights that aim at preparing the 2020 KCSE Candidate class to Academic Excellence</p>

<p><strong><u>Introduction</u></strong></p>
<p>It is in the public domain that at least over <u>400,000</u> candidates scored grades D+ and below out of the over <u>600,000</u> candidates who sat for the KCSE NATIONAL EXAM last year-2019. Only about <u>125,000</u> candidates managed to attain the minimum university entry qualification-C+ and above. With these statistics it goes without saying that School Managers, Teachers and the Candidate class have a great responsibility for changing this narrative. In view of this, this paper aims at offering simple and very practical strategies (IN NOTE FORM) that if adopted will catapult the school performance by far:</p>
<p><strong><u>IDENTIFY MISTAKES MADE PREVIOUSLY (2016-2019)</u></strong></p>
<p>Margaret A. Ogola in her novel (1994): <u>The River and the source</u> poses, “How can you know where you going to if you do not know where you are coming from?” It is very critical to reflect and identify the mistakes that the previous candidate classes have been making in order to avoid the same pitfalls. Some of the common mistakes are:</p>
<ul>
<li>Failure to study and implement the KNEC reports 2016-1019</li>
<li>Failure by the candidate class to master the content(syllabus)</li>
<li>Tolerance of ill behaviour and habits like laziness, absenteeism from school, rudeness e.t.c</li>
<li>Failure to accept and embrace the KCSE setting and marking emerging trends.</li>
<li>Tolerating success limiting policies</li>
<li>Failure to obediently follow through the set improvement action plan.</li>
<li>Lack of an improvement action plan</li>
<li>Lack of meaningful and effective teamwork</li>
<li>Tolerating lots of negative energy</li>
<li>Lack of a motivational policy for both the candidates and the teachers.</li>
</ul>

<p><strong><u>TO MAKE MEANINGFUL GRADES IN 2020:</u></strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Sensitize both the students and the teachers on the emerging trends in the setting and marking of KCSE</li>
<li>Come up with Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3 improvement Action plans</li>
<li>Embrace teamwork</li>
<li>Develop a motivation programme for everyone at school- the students, the non- teaching staff and the teachers.</li>
<li>Develop and run student centred programmes</li>
<li>Implement an exam system</li>
<li>Make sure that the candidates and the student body in general master the content as stipulated in the syllabus.</li>
<li>Create a positive success-oriented environment</li>
<li>Incorporate recommendations from KNEC reports in the school programmes.</li>
<li>Nurture character especially among the students. Virtues like hard work, honesty, determination and single focus must be emphasized.</li>
<li>Dismantle all Comfort Zones.</li>
<li>Develop Timetables Based on the Action Plans</li>
<li>Design a workable programme for the Head and the Tail- Ability grouping.</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>This is by paying the KNEC examination fee for both KCPE and KCSE fresh candidates for the past few years.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The case is however different when it comes to candidates wishing to sit their KCPE and KCSE exams for the second time-repeaters.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Unlike fresh candidates, parents, or guardians of KCPE and KCSE repeaters are expected to fully meet the cost of exams.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The surcharged fee is usually paid to the official KNEC accounts by school headteachers and principals.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The registration of candidates for the 2020 KCPE, KCSE, and KCSE QT exams is ongoing. The deadline for registration has been set on February 15 2020.</strong></p>

<p><strong>2020 KCSE REGISTRATION FEES FOR PROJECT-BASED SUBJECTS</strong></p>
<p><strong>2020 KCSE candidates taking Agriculture, Woodwork, Art, and Design, Home Science, and other project-based subjects are required to pay an additional fee to facilitate their projects.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Those taking Agriculture &; Home Science will pay Kshs 200 whereas those taking Aviation Technology will pay up to Kshs 2, 500.</strong></p>

<p><strong>The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC has dropped the mandatory UPI requirement for KCSE 2020 candidates. UPI in full means Unique Personal Identifier which is generated for all Kenyan students via the National Education Management Information System, NEMIS.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Previously, all Kenya students wishing to register as Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education candidates were expected to produce these UPIs before their registration.</strong></p>
<p><strong>NO UPIs</strong></p>
<p><strong>This major decision was arrived at by the Ministry of Education after most schools were reportedly unable to upload data for their 2020 KCSE candidates due to lack of UPIs.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The most affected group consisted of 2020 KCSE repeaters who unfortunately could not trace their UPIs from their former schools.</strong></p>
<p><strong>One principal who sought anonymity said that in their school, they had a total of 85 repeaters and only ten of them had their UPIs.</strong></p>
<p><strong>2020 KCSE REGISTRATION DEADLINE</strong></p>
<p><strong>All KCSE 2020 candidates are expected to upload their data into the KNEC registration portal by February 15 2020.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Candidates taking project-based subjects such as Agriculture, Computer and Home science have already received the KCSE 2020 instructions in readiness for the start of their projects.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The KCSE 2020 projects will be executed in two phases technically referred to as Milestones just like in 2019.</strong></p>

<p><strong>The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC has released 2019 KCPE and KCSE result slips for all the candidates.</strong></p>

<p><strong>In case there are errors, the affected candidates should immediately notify the council for the errors to be corrected in time.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The KCSE 2019 and KCPE 2019 certificates will be picked later after KNEC announces their release.</strong></p>
