KUCCPS List of Diploma and Certificate Courses for candidates who scored below C+ in 2021 KCSE

KUCCPS: Following the declaration of the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education-KCSE 2021 Examinations by the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Education, it is evident that only a handful of this year’s KCSE candidates hit the Kuccps Placement Passmark for universities, approximately 10 percent. According to Knec statistics, only 145,145 students managed the University entry grade, with nearly 700,000 students missing the mark. However, the students who scored D plain and above still have a chance to pursue Diploma and Certificate Courses in higher learning Institutions.

The students who scored C and C minus qualify to enroll for Diploma Courses in either of the 31 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across the country.

Also, the 495,686 students who scored D+ and below can sign up for certificate programs – craft certificate courses for those with D plain and above and artisan certificates for those who scored D plus and below.

“The number of candidates with a minimum TVET Diploma Courses qualification of grade C- and above in 2021 was 325,896 (39.27%). We, therefore, need to invest more in TVET Institutions where the bulk of our KCSE Examinations graduands will study,” Magoha stated as he released the KCES results.

The students who scored below C+ can also apply for College and TVET Institution Placement under the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). Those who get selected to the Colleges and Tertiary Institutions are eligible for government sponsorship through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

Overall, students have 18 choices open to them when making applications. Out of these, are six options for degree courses, four for diploma programmes, and a similar number for craft certificate options. Another four options are available for artisan certificate courses.

For degrees, candidates are expected to list their preferred four courses in the order of priority. Choice number one has three slots for the same programme (in three different universities).

The two-month application window is a wake-up call to teachers and parents amid reports that some teachers failed to guide the students through the course selection process before exams over fears that some could not meet the required grades.

Teachers are expected to assist candidates in picking the courses so as to avoid making the common mistake of selecting high-ranking and competitive courses in top universities.

However, candidates will have a chance to do the first and second course revision after KCSE results are released.

The second revision will only be applicable to candidates who do not merit any of their preferred choices.

For students who fail to secure placement, they will not pay for the second revision. However, the application fee paid at first revision will be applicable during the second revision.

According to KUCCPs, students applying for placement for the first time in the second course revision window, will pay Sh1,500

Last week KUCCPS asked 95,757 students who sat KCSE between 2020 and 2021 and qualified for placement, but haven’t enrolled, to re-apply for courses.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Agnes Mercy Wahome said those targeted are applicants for diploma, certificate and artisan courses.

Wahome said the government will sponsor all the students who will be successfully placed, including practising professionals who wish to upgrade their skills by taking technical courses.

This is the first time KUCCPs is placing students to TTCs following the Ministry of Education’s decision to transfer the mandate to the agency.

Until last year, the Ministry of Education was responsible for recruiting students for admission to the public primary TTCs.

Ministry of Education Director General Elyas Abdi has expressed confidence that KUCCPS would deliver on its task.

In a sensitization workshop in Thogoto TTC, in January this year, principals and their deans of curriculum were educated on the KUCCPs mandate, how to navigate the KUCCPS portals, validation of courses and placement processes.

They were also shown how to upload programmes and capacities on the KUCCPS database, and sensitised on application processing and inter-institutional transfers.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Mercy Wahome said the placement agency had developed a watertight automated system for admission that will ensure all legible applicants are placed.

Dr Wahome spelt out the roadmap for the admissions activity for the second batch of students who will join the institution to undergo training under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

In 2028, the Teachers Service Commission will review the recruitment requirements and guidelines to fit the new CBC curriculum demands.

Meanwhile, students wishing to be admitted to various universities and colleges by the KUCCPS placement board will have to undertake training for at least five and half years and major like their law, medicine, and engineering counterparts.

Teaching practice will now take two full terms since the education students will take three teaching subjects as opposed to the current two teaching subjects.

This will help the Teachers Service Commission deal with the glaring teacher shortages in the new teaching areas such as creative arts, music, and local languages introduced courtesy of the new Competency-based curriculum.

Earlier, the Commission had proposed to scrap the Bachelor of Education degree but interested parties especially universities weighed in forcing the Commission to back down its plan to kill the degree option.

The new TSC entry grade for education degree courses stands at KCSE mean grade of C+ Plus with a minimum of B- minus in the three teaching areas/ subjects of specialization for instance Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology.

In the newly adopted KUCCPS proposals given by TSC, students wishing to pursue a Bachelor of Education in Technology must have scored a B- Minus in the three subjects they would like to specialize in and at least a C Plain in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, the foundational subjects for any technology-related course.

“The areas identified in these courses are related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pathway, careers and technology strand,” partly reads the proposal.

The teachers exiting universities and colleges will hence be fully prepared to handle grade seven learners in Junior Secondary Schools up to Grade 12 learners in senior secondary.

KUCCPS applicants wishing to pursue a Bachelor of Education in Science and Agriculture are required to have at least a B- minus in the teaching subjects and at least a C plain in English and Mathematics.

“The areas identified in these courses are related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pathway, careers and technology strand,” reads the proposal.

Bachelor of Science (education) on the other hand will require students to have at least a B (plain) in two teaching subjects and a C (plain) in English and mathematics.

Bachelor of Education (arts, fine arts, german, guidance and counseling, french, home science and technology, home economics, physical education) and Bachelor of Education (early childhood) are required to have a minimum of B- in two teaching subjects and a C (plain) in English, Kiswahili and mathematics. These teachers will guide learners in the visual and performing arts pathway.

Bachelor of Education in special needs students will be required to have a C+ in two teaching subjects and a C (plain) in mathematics, English, and Kiswahili

Note: In all the degree programmes, students will also be required to pursue additional professional courses in curriculum development, psychology, and sociology in education, mentorship and coaching programmes, performance management, education action research management, foundations in education, and educational leadership.

Diploma in Education students is required to have a minimum of C+ and a similar grade in two teaching subjects. They are also required to have scored a C (Plain) in English and mathematics for science-based courses and a C- in mathematics for art-based courses.

The diploma programme at the universities will prepare the students to teach in pre-primary (PP1 and PP2) according to TSC.

A diploma in education in special needs at the university level requires a mean grade of C (plain) and C (plain) in two teaching subjects.
