The Teachers Service Commission is set to Start Registering Teachers Afresh to Clean its Payroll

“The Standard” has unearthed the Teachers Service Commission’s plan to clean its payroll by registering teachers afresh.

This countrywide TSC teacher registration process is set to begin next week.

According to The Sunday Standard, all TSC employed teachers will have to undergo fresh headcount at the school level.

Afterwards, the teachers’ data will be identified at the zonal level. This therefore means that the TSC is relying on school heads to do a thorough job in collecting data now that the smallest centre of data collection being the school.

This means that teachers who are currently earning salaries without proper documents and qualifications will be sent parking.

Similarly, TSC teachers who irregularly acquired TSC numbers and registration certificates will be identified and deregistered by the Commission.

The first pilot phase of TSC biometric registration will take place from May 11 2020 to May 15 2020. It will be carried out across seven counties in Kenya.

143 primary, secondary and tertiary institutions of learning in Uasin Gishu, Homa Bay, Nyeri, Kilifi, Kitui, Bungoma and Garissa will be selected on a pro-rata basis for pilot testing.

The clean will affect teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary learning institutions, Curriculum Support Officers, CSOs and special programmes across the 47 counties.

This move follows several instances of conflicting teachers’ data that continues to be released by the Commission.

Conflicting Numbers OF TSC Teachers

According to the latest data released by TSC ahead of the stakeholders registration meetings, there are 316, 662 teachers in both primary and secondary schools in Kenya.

According to the TSC, 217, 281 teachers have been deployed to serve in 22, 633 primary schools across Kenya while 99, 381 teachers are serving in 8, 865 secondary schools in Kenya.

This data conflicts the one presented before the National Assembly Education Committee which indicates that there are 211, 046 primary school teachers and 94, 522 secondary school teachers.

According to the TSC, the upcoming headcount of TSC teachers will help the Commission verify teacher distribution, utilization and specialization in all government learning institutions.

It will also help the TSC to update its current details on teacher’s biodata and validate teaching gaps in all public schools and training colleges based on size and learner enrollment.

This grand finale will put to a stop claims that thousands of teachers have over the years been drawing huge salaries from the Commission irregularly.

Besides, KNUT and KUPPET have previously accused the TSC of failing to clean up their payroll.
