 Top 10 Richest/ Wealthiest Counties in Kenya 2020-2022: Name of County, Source of Wealth and Gross County Product 2020

Nakuru and Kiambu Counties beat veteran counties- Mombasa and Kisumu in the list of top 10 wealthiest counties in Kenya 2020-2022

 Nairobi County is the richest County in Kenya 2020 with a GCP of 21.7% whereas Isiolo is the poorest county in Kenya with a GCP of 0.2%.

In summary:

According to the Gross County Report (GCP) 2019, Top 3 richest counties in Kenya 2020-22 are Nairobi, Nakuru and Kiambu.

Their Gross County Product exceeds 5% of Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product.

Lamu, Samburu and Isiolo Counties are among the poorest counties in Kenya 2020 with a Gross County Product, GCP of less than 0.5%.

Key drivers of economic growth in Kenya’s Counties include Agriculture, service and industry sectors.

The service sector contributes up to 54% of the total GCP.

Agriculture comes second and it accounts for up to 24% followed by the industry sector which contributes up to 21.4% of the total Gross County Product.

Agriculture is the key driver in the economic development of the majority of Kenya’s Counties save for Mombasa and Nairobi Counties.

Leading factors that have propelled the top richest Counties in Kenya to the front line include dense populations, major urban centres and thriving economic activities such as Agriculture, transportation, real estate, manufacturing, financial, wholesale and retail trade.

Counties that have embraced Agriculture in Kenya

Nakuru, Kiambu, Meru, Bungoma and Kakamega Counties have highly embraced Agriculture which greatly contributes to their robust growth.

Agriculture is however not prevalent in Kajiado, Isiolo, Kisumu and Machakos Counties.

Counties with potential but untapped industrial development opportunities in Kenya include Lamu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Tana River, Samburu and Isiolo Counties.
