Teachers will be recalled to their stations this week

Primary and secondary school teachers will be recalled to report to their stations of work this week as ministry plans to reopen basic learning institutions next month.

The aim of having teachers report to their schools earlier is to prepare for the planned official schools’ reopening.

Our media team has established that the ministry is planning to reopen learning institutions for pre- candidates and candidates on 19th October 2020.

Senior learners in class seven and eight, form three and four will hence resume studies as from next month.

This information is based on the recommendations tabled by the Dr. Sarah Ruto-led committee released yesterday.

    New KCPE, KCSE Calendar

According to proposal, Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of secondary Education (KCSE) candidates will be among the first cohort to resume learning.

About three weeks after candidates have resumed learning, other learners will be recalled for shift learning that will see second term work covered before the end of the year.

Third term work will be covered between January and March 2021, in order to pave way for the administration of Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of secondary Education (KCSE) exams, in April 2021.

The Standard has reported that if these proposals are adopted by the ministry of education, then teachers will be recalled back to school as early as Wednesday this week to hold meetings as well as prepare for the term.

Last Friday, Education CS Professor George Magoha directed teachers to prepare to report back to their institutions.

While addressing the media after assessing preparedness at the Mawego Technical Training Institute in Homabay County, the CS observed that many institutions had complied with directives given by the Ministry to facilitate reopening of schools.

“Teachers can start to prepare to report back to their schools to make them habitable ahead of the students’ arrival. At that time, we will have phased re-opening with priority given to exam classes. In fact, technical colleges are likely to re-open soon,” he stated.

Teachers to be sensitized on Covid-19 guidelines and health protocols before October 2

Upon reporting to their stations, teachers will be sensitised on Covid-19 guidelines and health protocols such as correct use of face masks, sanitising, hand washing and keeping safe social distance when learning kicks off.

The task force proposes coronavirus awareness creation targeting all education officials , school head and boards of management on or before October 2.

This will be done by Ministry of Education staff jointly with officials from Health and Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Similar awareness will be extended to teachers, non teaching staff, school community members like parents and guardians, caregivers, sponsors and chaplains.

During the first two days of opening, the task force proposes that the awareness be done for all learners. This will be done by the institutions response committees.
