A radiotherapist, also commonly known as a radiation therapist or therapeutic radiographer, is an allied health professional who is a key member of the oncology team that treats patients, primarily those with cancer, using radiation.
They are responsible for the technical planning and daily delivery of radiation treatments.
Key Roles and Duties:

Administering Treatment: They accurately deliver the prescribed dose of high-energy radiation (often using machines like a linear accelerator) to a targeted area of the patient’s body, as outlined in the treatment plan developed by the radiation oncologist and medical physicist.

Patient Positioning: They position the patient precisely for each treatment session to ensure the radiation hits the tumor while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. This often involves using advanced imaging systems and immobilization devices.

Operating Equipment: They calibrate and operate the complex radiation therapy equipment.

Monitoring Patients: They monitor the patient for any unusual reactions or side effects during the treatment and provide emotional support throughout the course of treatment, which can last several weeks.

Record Keeping: They maintain detailed records of the daily radiation dosages and treatment parameters.
Distinction from a Radiation Oncologist:
It’s important to note the difference between a radiotherapist and a radiation oncologist:

Radiation Oncologist: This is a medical doctor (physician) who specializes in using radiation to treat cancer. They are the leaders of the radiation oncology team. They examine the patient, evaluate the cancer, determine if radiation therapy is appropriate, design the overall treatment plan (including the total dose and technique), and oversee the patient’s care.

Radiotherapist (Radiation Therapist): This is a highly trained healthcare technologist who works under the prescription and supervision of the radiation oncologist to carry out the treatment plan. They are the ones who are in the room with the patient, setting up and operating the machines for the daily treatments.
An oncologist is a doctor who has special training in diagnosing and treating cancer. They manage a patient’s care throughout the course of the disease, from diagnosis and treatment planning to follow-up care.
Oncologists often specialize in different types of treatment:

Medical Oncologists use medicines to treat cancer, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy. They often coordinate the patient’s overall care.

Surgical Oncologists specialize in removing tumors and cancerous tissue through surgery and performing certain types of biopsies for diagnosis.
