This comes as a relief especially for schools which were denied free education funds last year for learners without crucial documents for the National Education Management Information System, NEMIS such as Birth Certificates. Initially, only learners whose names were on the National Education Management Information System, NEMIS, could receive government funding.

According to the Ministry of Education’s latest statistics, all the 10 million learners in both primary and secondary public schools in Kenya will receive funds whether their names are on the NEMIS system or not.

CS Magoha said this during the official launch of the Elimu Scholarship Programme.

He further added that no school should be punished for missing birth certificates of learners since some of these technicalities were currently being solved by the Ministry of Education.

MANUAL COUNT OF LEARNERS

Consequently, all heads of public schools in Kenya are expected to carry out a manual count of learners in their respective institutions and present them to the Ministry of Education for free education funds to be released.

CS MAGOHA’S TAKE ON INCREASING SCHOOL FEES

Magoha has issued a stern warning against any move by unscrupulous heads of boarding schools to hike the 2020 school fees.

In 2019, the principals had proposed to have secondary school fees increased citing inadequate funding from the government.

He directed parents and other key education stakeholders to report cases of children sent away from school due to lack of school fees.

He also directed all secondary schools to adhere to the Ministry of Education’s guidelines on the 2020 secondary school fees.

Magoha cleared the air on infrastructure saying the Government has set aside Kshs 8.2 billion for secondary schools’ infrastructure under the World Bank’s support for the Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project (SEQUIP).
