Speaking on Citizen TV news on Monday, March 30, 2020; Dr. Patrick Amoth, the Director-General MOH said that the number of coronavirus positive cases might soar higher than the projected 10, 000 cases if Kenyans continue to ignore the directives and measures issued to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Dr. Amoth, the major challenge lies in the insufficient supply of coronavirus protective equipment.  Since coronavirus protective gear is meant for Single-use, Kenya is likely to face a greater challenge because the kits are not locally available.

However, the Government is working on local capacity building by engaging local companies such as Rivertex to help in the production of coronavirus protective equipment such as masks.

Besides, Dedan Kimathi and Jomo Kenyatta Universities have been brought on board to help in the production of ventilators.

Dr. Amoth further added that according to the MOH projection, one person can transmit the novel coronavirus to four people. Therefore, if Kenyans do not observe social distancing, they should brace for tougher times.

The DG also added that the Kenyan health system is weak just like many African countries. Therefore, if coronavirus cases soar, the Kenyan health system is likely to be overrun.
