TSC FREE TO INCREASE TEACHERS’ SALARIES IN JULY; TSC PAY RISE 2023/2024

TSC News Today 2023: The Teachers Service Commission has been tasked with the role of reviewing and upscaling teachers’ salaries starting July 2023. The latest TSC teachers’ salaries news hitting our newsdesk this morning shows that teachers are set to receive better remuneration after the court of appeal yesterday gave the teachers’ employer a nod to remit teachers’ salaries with a 7% salary rise without slashing the 1.5% housing levy. This means that Heads of Institutions in National and Extra County Schools with over 1000 students will get a salary increment of up to Sh9,196. The lowest earner in this group will walk home with a salary of Sh140,576 while the highest earner in this group will earn Sh166,852 per month.

TSC has already been allocated a total of 9.1 billion shillings by the National Treasury, which will be used to initiate the pay increment plan for July into effect for more than 350,000 primary and secondary school teachers and secretariat staff members who are currently serving under the career and progression guidelines CPGs and paid by the exchequer.

The disclosure of the payroll for the month of July implies that instructors will get their compensation at the very latest by Saturday of this week.

According to the details that have been uncovered, some of the teachers’ salaries and allowances have been adjusted, while others have had their salaries backdated. Teachers are also set to get a salary increment of 7 percent of their basic salary in this July pay.

Announcing the salary increment of between 7 percent and 10 percent for the teachers and Civil Servants, President William Samoei Ruto said this is to cushion public servants from the harsh economic times occasioned by skyrocketing inflation.

“I am aware that there is a proposal before the SRC to raise the pay of several cadres of public servants, including civil officials and other types of public servants. “We have agreed that beginning tomorrow, your salaries will be adjusted between 7 and 10 percent,” President William Ruto stated during the introduction of the new e-citizen platform at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).

Though, initially, there were early plans to deduct 1.5 percent of gross income for the housing fund, the court put a stop to such plans. The orders that had been placed to suspend the Finance Act 2023 were not overturned by Judge Mugure Thande of the High Court.

The judge ruled that the petitioners (Busia senator Okiya Omtatah and others) had proven that they have a case, and he also added that the public stands to suffer if the restrictions were to be lifted.

Yesterday, Judge Mugure Thande stopped the treasury from deducting the 1.5% housing levy from teachers’ salaries in July.

During the ruling of the case, the judge said that Kenyans might be subjected to unlawful taxes if the petitions against the act pull through.

This, therefore, means that teachers will receive their full salaries in July without further deductions.
