Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE Intake 2021/2022; Second Intake for Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE and Early Childhood Teacher Education, ECDE Postponed

Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE is a relatively new course for school leavers wishing to fill available teaching vacancies in primary schools usually advertised by the Teachers Service Commission, TSC.

DPTE teacher graduates will oversee the effective implementation of the new competence-based curriculum, CBC that has already been rolled out by the Ministry of Education, MoE in Kenya.

Unlike the current primary school teachers, P1 teachers, DPTE teachers possess higher academic qualifications and teaching skills tailored to fit the needs of the dynamic modern day learners.

DPTE Intake 2021/2022

The first cohort enrolled in May 2021 to pursue the new Diploma in Primary Teacher Education in various teacher training colleges, TTCs approved by the Ministry of Education to offer the course.

The first enrollment for the new Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE  and ECD in May was however riddled with complaints arising from various stakeholders pegged on the raised Minimum Requirements.

According to some, the Ministry should lower the Minimum KCSE Entry Grade and subject Requirements for the new Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE to attract more students to fill declared capacity in Teacher Training Colleges, TTCs.

The low enrollment rates experienced during the first intake for the new Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE in May has since been attributed to the revised entry requirements.

Second Intake for the New Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE 2021-2022 Postponed

The Second  intake of primary school teacher trainees to government sponsored teacher training colleges for the new Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE and Early childhood Education which was scheduled to take place in July 2021 has unfortunately been postponed till further notice.

Through an official circular at the disposal of our media team, the Ministry of Education, MoE has informed TTC principals to put off the second intake until the necessary logistics are completed.

“We shall inform you when the exercise will be done once we are through with the necessary logistics,” read the circular in part.

Privately sponsored Teacher Training Colleges TTCs have also been advised to remain patient till August when they will receive greenlight on how to admit new students for the new Diploma in Primary Teacher Education programme.

This means that private colleges will be forced to count losses and wait longer before receiving the first batch of learners interested in undertaking DPTE since no new admissions are in the offing.

A total of 24 teacher training colleges were expecting new students during the just aborted second intake.

DPTE Reporting Dates 2021/2022

The official Reporting Date for the first batch of DPTE teacher trainees was June 2, 2021.

A total of 1,400 students were distributed across six teacher training colleges namely: Thogoto, Shanzu, Egoji, Baringo, Machakos, and Migori.

According to the Ministry of Education MoE, Guidelines 2021/2022, the official reporting date for the second batch of DPTE teacher trainees was July 27, 2021 but the exercise has been put off.

The Minimum KCSE Entry Grade for the new Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, DPTE has been raised from C- Minus to C plain with applicants expected to attain a C Plain in either English or Kiswahili, Mathematics, One Humanity and One Science. However, it has been noted that most Teacher Training Colleges are likely to suffer a huge blow because so far the applications received are below please as opposed to the expected enrolment rates even after the extension of the application period.

DPTE qualifications 2021
