Kisii High Senior School’s History.
Long before it became one of Kenya’s top national schools, Kisii School began as a simple dream in the 1930s.
In 1934, in the green highlands near Kisii, local leaders came together with a bold idea. They wanted their children to have access to formal education—something that was still limited for Africans during the colonial period. After persistent requests to the colonial government and contributions from the local community, a small institution was born. It was called Government African School (GAS) Kisii.
At first, the school was modest. A few classrooms stood on land donated by a local chief, and only a small number of boys attended. They were taught basic subjects, along with practical skills like carpentry and agriculture. Life was simple, but the foundation for something great had been laid.
As the years passed, the school began to grow. By the late 1930s, the first group of students sat for their primary exams. In the 1940s, more classes were added, and the school slowly transformed from a basic training center into a place of deeper learning. By the early 1950s, it had become a full secondary school, preparing students for national examinations.
The 1950s and 1960s marked a turning point. The school introduced higher-level studies, including the Cambridge School Certificate and later A-level education. Students now had the opportunity to pursue advanced subjects, including sciences. Around the same time, Kenya itself was moving toward independence, and Kisii School was helping prepare young minds for a new nation.
After Kenya’s independence in 1963, the school continued to expand. Its reputation grew, and it began producing graduates who would go on to serve in government, business, and other important fields. The once small school in Kisii had become a center of excellence.
Decades later, in 2012, Kisii School reached a major milestone—it was officially recognized as a national school. This meant that students from all over Kenya could now join, making it even more competitive and prestigious.
Today, Kisii School stands tall as a symbol of growth, resilience, and ambition. From a humble beginning with a handful of students, it has become a respected institution shaping the future of many young Kenyans.
And it all started with a simple belief: that education could change lives.
